12/18/05: Santa's Little Debbie Snacks!
We once lived in a land where companies lined up to brand themselves with ol' Saint Nick. Not so today. We once lived in a land where you could count on a zillion food products to arrive in special holiday-themed editions just in time for the December stuff-your-face fest. Not so today. Little Debbie represents the small group of food companies who haven't forgot their God fearing roots. Every year, you can count on Little Debbie to come out with cakes shaped like Christmas trees and bootleg Rice Krispies treats with red and green crap in the middle. Long live Little Debbie, forever unafraid to shout "CHRISTMAS!" from any rooftop, no matter how denominational.
Today's commercial comes to us from Little Debbie, which is only natural, otherwise that entire intro paragraph would have y'all making with the what-the-fucks. It's not nice to say shit like that so close to Christmas. Like many other food companies that had big enough promo budgets to do Christmas commercials, Little Debbie goes down the simplest avenue: It's grub for Santa. Instead of whatever you'd normally leave out for Santa, you're advised to leave Little Debbie snack cakes. I don't think Santa would take issue with this.
The limey little girl in the commercial is giving me a double aneurysm, but she's good for something -- I haven't given much thought to all the times I've left food out for Santa Claus in years, and those are some nice memories there you betcha. As I recall, my earliest experiences with leaving-shit-out-for-Santa came in the form of plates of carrots. It wasn't my decision. This is what my mother taught me. We left Santa Claus carrots year after year. I'd later gain a stronger sense of self and drop the carrots in favor of Chips Ahoy cookies. Sometimes my parents would get all clever and leave a half-eaten cookie on the plate for me to gawk at in awe, but I admit that much of the effect was lost as they'd typically bite the cookie in half with me standing right there. I never understood that.
