12/24/05: Nickelodeon's Crazy Days Giveaway!
This one's a bit different because...well, it's mine. As some of you know, I've spent the past few years working at Nickelodeon, writing and producing promos and commercials, and as a rather twisted aficionado of the thirty-second spot, it's been a stressed but blessed dream come true. The "Crazy Days Giveaway" project all but decimated any plans I had for December, but it was worth it, because I finally got to do my very own Christmas commercial.
Well, kind of. It's not so much "Christmas" as it is "holiday." Even I can't escape that one, sorry guys. It's the story of a giant, walking orange gift box who gives out little baby orange gift boxes, as a choir sings and sleigh bells ring and ten kids across the globe win weird ass electronic toys that shake and light up. I can barely hear myself in there, but I'm part of the singing choir. Our adventures in creating this spot took many working-till-midnight nights, along with a shoot day across Manhattan that had all of the Christmas tourists trying to figure out if the guy in the orange gift box was famous enough to warrant asking for an autograph.
Seeing and being a part of what really goes into something like this makes you really appreciate the effort, and I should probably stop giving all of the old commercials I review such a hard time, because damn, this shit doesn't come together by itself. The orange box costume now rests near my desk at work, where I'm sworn to protect it against all who would seek to try it on. Except me. I'm allowed. Not sure I want to, though. The guy that wore it throughout the shoot had to be sweating balls. It's not like we hose the stuff down afterwards.
