12/9/05: A Very Woolworth's Christmas!
Here's a fairly simple commercial from Woolworth's and Woolco, two stores you will never buy toys from again. Despite Woolworth's being something of an industry giant, my only experiences with the chain centered on one lousy store in the Woodbridge Mall over in Jersey, and no matter how impressive Woolworth's looked in the commercials, this place ruined it each and every time. I know that this wasn't a prevalent trait throughout all Woolworth's stores, but this one was essentially just a step or two up from a Dollar Tree, where everything was generic and/or crafted on an unnamed poverty-stricken island. I only mention this to vent my frustration with having never seen a "real" Woolworth's. They always seemed like they were as good as any Toys 'R' Us in the commercials, with or without the giraffes.
This particular ad pimps some old Tyco racing set that was exclusive to the W-stores. It's a serious pimpage, too -- the ad's 98% Tyco and 2% Woolworth's/Woolco. The business of toy store chains offering exclusive goods that their competitors aren't even allowed to carry has really exploded in recent years, with Target, Wal-Mart, KB and TRU all stocked with shit the others legally cannot sell. It was just a few months ago that I had to drive 40 minutes to Target over and over again because they were the only toy store charged to sell Darth Vader figures with "lava reflective" suits. I know it sounds silly, but the gimmick works, at least in as far as getting people to want and buy toys they'd otherwise have no interest in wanting or buying. When you pass by Target-exclusive My Little Pony dolls and buy them just because they're Target exclusives, there's no denying tha -- shit I was supposed to be writing about some car race track.
