01/22/2003 Entry: "Army/X-E"

I'm much more the type to be a draft dodger than a good patriot, but this e-mail made me feel pretty nice...

Brian writes: Hey Matt, thanks for running such a great site man. I'm in the Army stationed in Kuwait and there is definitely a lack of things to do out here. Being one of SA's out here I don't have a whole lot of work to do, (typical of the Army). And since almost every damn site that is worth looking at is blocked for some stupid reason that it falls under the category "tasteless" I'm in need of a good thing to waste my time. And since your site apparently falls under the category of not tasteless you site occupies my day. So if you ever need to list awards that you've gotten because of this site just remember that the Army in Kuwait doesn't think it is tasteless.

I'm much like you when it comes to hoarding things. Like on my way here I was only allowed to ship like a 500 pounds of stuff and it took me a good long time trying to figure out what I would have to put in storage for a year. Hard choice to put my TMNT figures in storage over my Masters of the Universe figures but it was something that had to be done. Thanks again keep up the good work at keeping me from being productive.

Its kinda sad this has no comments, and the pee-wee/skeletor one has lots.. :/

Anyway, just wait for a news crew to be filming a load of soldiers reading the site - you know its gonna happen ;)

Free publicity = good publicity

500 lbs of TMNT figures? Not the first thing I'd think to bring to the desert.

Matt - I am a long time reader of your site and really enjoy reading your articles. They are extremely entertaining.

I have to point out a nitpicky gramatical thing that I keep seeing in your articles that drives me nuts. It pertains to the word UNIQUE. Many times I see you say "very unique". Something cannot be "very unique"...neither can it be "more unique" or "less unique". Unique means one-of-a-kind...completely distinct from all else. It is incorrect to use a qualifying word, such as very or more, with it.

The reason I am compelled to write is that I am 99.9% of the time very impressed with your vocabulary and word-play...its just this one thing that eats away at me each time I see it in one of your articles.

PS Saki and vintage SW rules!

Hey, Sharpy. What about the differences between "its" and "it's"? I'm not going to say it bothers me, though. Hell, more often than not, I'm laughing too hard to give a fuck.

Back to the related(?) topic, it's good to know that my cousin, who's also stationed in Kuwait, still has the chance to read XE. I'm sure his ass is thrilled.

Five hundred pounds? He's exaggerating, right?

This website need a forum and pr0n. Everyone needs a little pr0n to get them going in the morning, and everyone also knows that it is nigh impossible to find pr0n on the internet. If there is one thing the internet needs it is more pr0n. With pornography, this site would be bigger than Jesus, Buddha, and Michael Jackson combined!

Sharpy Sharp:
If you are so smart, why don't you drive a rocket car or live in a gold house?
The word "unique" has three main meanings in contemporary American English: one of a kind, occuring in a specific area, condition, or time, or to signify somethign extraordinary. The use of qualifying words, or comparative abjectives, with an "absolute" term is generally frowned upon by most grammarians.
Many "reputable" writers have been known to qualify a "unique" something. This is possible, and somewhat accepted, if unique is intended to be synonomous with extraordinary. Ergo, calling something "more unique" than something else is justifiable. I would be more worried by people who say (those who write the incorrect phrase appear quite ignorant) "intensive purposes" instead of "intents and purposes" and people who do not understand the difference between "there" and "their", or people that write "per se" as "per say".

Here is a list of common mistakes and inaccuracies prevalent in spoken and written American English, errors and stuff.

Hey, Atomic. I said it DIDN'T bother me. I'm just fucking pointing it out.
You're right, Matt. It's getting pretty thick.....

My new favourite quote:
Revolution is not a dinner party, not an essay, nor a painting, nor a piece of embroidery; it cannot be advanced softly, gradually, considerately, respectfully, politely, plainly, and modestly.

This is the person that wrote the letter. Thanks a ton by the way for posting it, it was quite the nice suprise to find that and in a odd way it means a lot. But just to clarify the 500 pounds of stuff was not just TMNT. I had 500 pounds of stuff that I COULD bring and that included like clothes and stuff like that. I was just making the point that I had to choose TMNT stuff over other because along with my tv and clothes and stuff there wasn't a lot of weight left over for my 'junk'. Thanks though.

This should clear up everything.

"A slavish concern for the composition of words is the sign of a bankrupt intellect."

Eternal praise and a shiny New Hampshire quarter to whomever can guess where that quote came from. (Hint: it's in an old kid's book)

"But that's just as bad," protested Milo.
"You mean just as good," corrected the Humbug. "Things which are equally bad are also equally good. Try to look at the bright side of things."

Huzzahs to wanglow!!! Sorry, I was kidding about the quarter.

The letter was cool, but I personally would bring Transformers instead of TNMT. But hey, to each their own, and good luck over in the desert soldier dude.
