Shasta, the makers of soda pop for people who can't afford real soda pop, have been hitting the town as of late with a new flavor and a spirited twist. Called 'Tiki Punch,' this Easter Island favorite boasts a brave amount of carbonation and a healthy lack of caffeine. Possibly the worst tasting shit I've ever put to my lips, the 12-packs are still worth buying because there's a cool Trader Vic's Tiki God tumbler chilling out on the box. I got the case for a mere two bucks, because companies need to balance out terrible soda with attractive prices.
Each can is also adorned with the friendly Tiki man, almost making up for the sewage inside. Most of you probably haven't heard of Shasta, but they actually produce dozens of flavored colas, ranging from grape to Tiki to strawberry grape Tiki. They stick with what works, and nothing works better than an angry Tiki God snarling on the side of a soda can.
On the plus side, the cans work great as decorations for your wall unit.

I dunno, Geek; I'm kind of inclined to accept the stated limits of a man who has willingly and successfully ingested Nad's hair-removal gel. When a guy like that tells me that something is too noxious to put in my (or his) mouth, I tend to perk up and listen.

Why would noone have heard of shasta, in our local grocery stores, pepsi and coke take up 1/3rd of the isle; 7up, and other little companies the next 1/3rd, and Shasta, the last half. wait, that's too much, but still true. I like a lot of those cheap pops, but my new favorite is dnL, (I don't know if it's supposed to be dnL or 7up-side-down). You wanna know an absolutely WRETCHED soda? It's called 'Frula'.I picked up a 2-liter of this awful concoction at the local Sav-A-Lot for a whopping 59 cents, and I still think I got ripped off. It tastes vaguely like creamy fruit punch, but I can't for the life of me figure out what kind of "fruit" they used. I think it's equal parts rutebega extract and bull semen, but not a cool bull that gores matadors and fucks cows like nobody's business. There's an exhibit in Epcot called Ice Station Cool. It's sponsored by Coca-Cola. Anyway, they take you through an archeological exhibit in an arctic setting, and when you get to the end, they have a gift shop with soda dispensers that offer free samples of Coca-Cola products from around the world. Some had apple flavor, while others had watermelon. There was one outstanding beverage from Italy called Beverly. It's supposed to be an appertif made to cleanse the palate between meals. It tastes horrible, but for some reason I can drink it.

Jones is pretty good stuff but almost saccharine sweet. I love the idea they had of a clear soda with no flavor title- you find out what you're drinking when you open it. Way better than Jones is Journey- the flavors are more complex than your usual soda, things like cream soda with coconut, ginger ale with blackberry root, vanilla bean soda with hints of maple and passionflower. I haven't seen them at too many places, but they're definitely worth the search. And all you people hooked on Jolt need to hunt down Afri-Cola. The stuff is hard as hell to find in the States (it's a German import), although I've seen it for 99 cents a bottle at the local Cost Plus World Market on more than one occasion. They don't say for sure how much caffeine is in a bottle of it, but from what I've heard it's at 100 mg a bottle- 25 mg more than Jolt!
Then there was this brand of soda that Perrier made a few decades ago called Pschitt. It was supposed to be onomatopeia for the noise a soda bottle makes when you open it, but for some reason it never really took off in English-speaking countries. I Pschitt you not.

Another amusing soft drink anecdote:
There's this drink called Mr. Pibb. For some reason it's only available in the south because I've never seen it in New York City (damned interstate differences). Mr. Pibb tastes like Dr. Pepper, but unlike Dr. Pepper does not come in diet form, which sucks monkey balls.
Anyway, I was at Ice Station Cool at Epcot, and I asked one of the attendants if they had any samples of Mr. Pibb. They gave me a strange look which subsided after I told them I was joking.
Later that night, I went back to the hotel and to the gift shop's food and beverage section to check out a can of Mr. Pibb. It turned out to be a Coca-Cola product.

Shannon, I used to be able to find Jolt all along the south shore (Digby-Yarmouth-Shelburne), though I haven't lived there in years. I doubt it'll ever be out of stock in Halifax though -- every kid who hated coffee in university drank the stuff. And considering the high density of universities and colleges there, I'm sure they're doing great business. I just stuck with the coffee, but I knew a few people who put on the freshman fifteen thanks to Jolt cola alone.
In Toronto, Montreal and Quebec? I don't think that you're allowed to open a drug market or corner store without at least ten percent of your cola being Jolt. And to this day, I've never tasted the stuff. (Which isn't saying much; I'm actually not a fan of most soft drinks).
I have the damnedest time finding Jones Soda anywhere non-coastal in Canada. The further away from an ocean you get the faster the Jones market-saturation drops. I was trying to explain the importance of the discovery to my girlfriend when I found some in a cooler at a restaurant a week ago. She managed to convince me to leave without buying any, telling me if we found in there we'd find it elsewhere. Why -- o why! -- did I trust her and fall for her confident reassurances?
Pschitt. I love that. I would have bought it for the name alone -- even if it tasted like pschitt -- because I'm a silly little corporate tool that way.

It's an extremely high caffeinated ginger ale flavored drink that if it were armed it would blow your head off time and time again without thinking about it. This is the worst tasting stuff thatI have ever had. It does have one upside to it though. If you drink a bottle of it, it WILL and I do mean WILL keep you up for hours. When I worked night shift I didn't get much sleep beforehand so I looked for the most deadly caffienated drink available. I think I found it. Wow, you all have some really great soda stories. Too bad my taste buds and weight restrictions are restricted to diet drinks. Everything else is high in calories. Even the Stew Leonard's brands, which aren't too special to begin with (they taste like regular soda), is over 150 calories. The bottle is nice, but the contents inside are too toxic.
Speaking of overseas brands, my sister and I went over to Prince Edward Island, and we bought Diet Pepsi in a longneck clear bottle. My guess is the local laws do not premit the manufacturing of soda bottles in plastic or something. If there are any PEI residents that can clarify this, please do. (I still have the bottle somewhere)
Oh, and NYC has Fresca. Williamsburg Brooklyn, to be exact. There's a store right on the corner of Bedford Ave. and North 7th where the L train is. You'll find the 20 oz bottles there for the still low price of $1, as opposed to $1.25 everywhere else. Blasted inflation.

First, a note about Vancouver: Canada's SARS problem was in TORONTO, not Vancouver. These two cities are about 4000 (yes, 3 zeros) kilometers apart. For those of you who prefer miles, that's about 2800 - in other words, wrong damn city, stupid!
OK, back to nasty "soft" drinks. For all of you singing the praises of Mountain Dew Code Red and other odd, highly-caffeinated beverages, I should warn you that the effects are different in Canada. There's an obscure federal law that says you can't put caffeine in soft drinks that are not brown unless you put enormous labels about it all over. We like to complain about stupid Americans up here in the great white north, but it's pretty hard to top stupid parents who think any non-brown liquid must be good for their kids... I hate this species.
In other news (this is turning into a really long post), has anyone else tried the various weirdnesses from Safeway? Around here, most Safeway stores have cheap (~50 cents) vending machines outside, filled with "Safeway Select" in various flavours. I do not recommend the "wild raspberry" - tastes like a melted popsicle.

She said in reply, "If we got a coffee maker for this floor, we'd have to transfer you to another building." In other words, 3 cups is too much. In actuality, 3 cups and a can of Diet Coke is more than too much.
Say, didn't there used to be an IRC channel for X-E once?

Great soda shop here in Dallas - couple hundred sodas in glass bottles and they have that Ramune from Japan.

Tiki Punch is pretty strange tasting but it becomes delicious if you put some lemonade powder in there.
Just beware of a tiki foam rocket!
Mmmmmmm.... Lemon Tiki Punch...

I just found Shasta Tiki Punch at my local Big Lots.
This was my ultra-favorite soda as a child. I lived in Marina Del Rey, California, a yacht harbor built in the heyday of Tiki style.
I also liked Canada Dry's Tahitian Treat, but Shasta Tiki was better.
Poured a big glass of it this evening over crushed ice, and it was as good as I remember. Not as sickly sweet as Tahitian Treat. Tastes more of maraschino cherries.
