Hey, Matt-- is that the ORIGINAL MUSCLE commercial???
How could I get that in an .mpg or .avi file from you? The MUSCLE community has been looking for that thing for years!!!
I'm pretty sure I know a guy who could host it easily, too.

I think the round Trix tasted better.
Maybe it had more sugar than the current version.

You know what one of the better commercials was 'back in the day'? Remember the one for Heinse Ketchup with the kid pretending to fly the bottle as a spaceship or something? I just really got a big kick out of that and it is partly responsible I think for my current interest in sci-fi, I mean it was a ketchup bottle flying around in space.

Captain OG Readmore, Pick-a-Nick.
I really hated that stupid cat. I wasn't too fond of the stupid adaptations of books they did, either. How to Eat Fried Worms wasn't too awful, but I preferred the book. I'm a snob that way.

Why are aliens eating Cap'n Crunch? Or his cereal, anyway. I don't remember that ad at all.
Popeye had a son? That means Popeye had an implied penis. And Olive -- oh God, ew. >:[ I like to watch the silver age of 'toons which includes a lot of Max Fleischer's Popeye and I only remember his three nephews. Ew; Popeye having sex with Olive Oil. Ew. Ew!

That MASK figure? My childhood favourite MASK figure (tied with Stilleto's) and one of my all-time all-'round favourites. It's a bike that turns into a helicopter! A BIKE THAT TURNS INTO A HELICOPTER! Beat *THAT* Swiss Army Knife. Ha!
I was playing air Simon Says earlier this week. Making the Beeps and pad-pressing motions myself. In the dark room I'm kept in to keep me away from normal and contemporary society, of course.
I had the Get in Shape Girl! thing. It came with two dumbbells that weighed about 1/1 000 000 th of a pound. Cheap piece of. . . I also liked Raisin Bran (and still do). So, obviously, I had issues as a kid.
Hey, the lesbian Peanuts characters. I'm trying to muster up some excitement (note the lack of exclamation point on that last sentence), but -- I didn't really like Peanuts, and these two were just. . .kinda. . .lame. Give me Teela and Evil-Lyn exploring their sexuality over these two any day. ;) (I'm sure there probably is a website for that out there somewhere). But there is a Cheerio that fell out of the Bits 'N' Bites bag laying at my feet. That's kind of exciting! Mmmm, floor Cheerio.

So I just saw that Army Gear pic and it brought up previously locked memories in my mind. When I was younger I had these army figures. They were very small and green but they came in, you know, army stuff. Like there was a canteen (which actually worked) that would fold out into an aircraft carrier that could hold a lot of the army guys and maybe even a plane or two. I wasn't too into these so I can't remember any of the other figures, but please tell me, were these things from the Army Gear collection or something entirely different?

You mean there weren't purple puffs in Trix originly? Well, the things you learn every day...
I remember Talking Wrinkles. An old friend of mine had one of those. Don't remember it doing much, though. It was bwoke.
Crunchatize me, Cap'n!
Oh, god. The Brady Bunch Hour. My dad had some recorded episodes of these, and boy did they suck. They Monkees were going to do something like this, but thankfully they dropped the idea.
Fairy Tails...um, yeah.
Now there is no way I could forget Radskate! He was the coolest!
There is also no way I could forget Mr. Mouth either!
Chip, Chip, Chip, Chip and Dale! MORPG! Chip, Chip, Chip, Chip and Dale! When your hungry!

Nerf. Proud sponsers of Nickelodeon GUTS!
Ah, yes. The forgotten sun logo for Raisen Bran. I haven't seen him since...1994 I believe.
MUPPET BABIES! I used to watch that show every single fricken day. It seems stupid now, but back then, there wasn't anything cooler then Miss Piggy running around in a diaper.

Chad: I watched Today's Special every freakin' day when I was a wee lad. In fact, once I got cable, I was GLUED to Nickelodeon. Today's Special, Pinwheel, uhm... isn't that pretty much all they showed back then? And no commercials! I think my first true moment of outrage was seeing the first commercials on Nickelodeon. I despise advertising to this day.
Anyhow, yeah... Today's Special... with the Jeffery mannequin guy who wore a hat and came to life and... the whole thing was really creepy. At least it didn't have Andrew McCarthy.

Starting Line-ups. STARTING LINE-UPS!!!! Back in the day, those things were "teh awesome!" And they did next to nothing. I mean, they were marketed as being posable, but if you tried to pose them in anything other than the boxed pose, they looked really f'ed up. They were still cool though.
As soon as a read ChaosMonkey's reply to Pick A Nick, that damn OG Readmore jingle came into my head. Why do I remember some of the stupidest shit FOREVER??? I don't really remember any of the cartoons, though. Just that damn cat.
Rygar, Army Gear stuff was pretty cool. That canteen was pretty cool.
And, I used to have that MASK bike-acopter. The yellow character guy's mask was my favorite for some unexplainable reason.
Oh, by the way, Nickelodeon has made 3 important contributions to society

By far one of the better cartoons, though I suppose I can understand why they cancelled it, since a child I nannied got scared and had mega nightmares from both the Dark Harvest and The Wettening episodes... but to me, Dark Harvest was great!
I had a Fairy Tail and a Talking Wrinkles when I was a wee lass.

Invader Zim: Created by the greatest comic artist of all time, Jhonen Vazquez. Executive produced by one of the original creaters of Mystery Science Theater 3000, Frank Coniff. Of course it was awesome. But it was doomed from the start. And they probably won't release it on DVD, since they haven't released Ren & Stimpy. But you can *ahem* locate it online if your morals allow it.
Pinwheel, Salute Your Shorts (Awful Waffle! Awful Waffle!), Ren & Stimpy, Welcome Freshmen (Mortis, the safety tortoise; He always plays it safe!), Double Dare, What Would You Do?, Muppet Babies, AHH! Real Monsters, You Can't Do That On Television and Are You Afraid of the Dark? are all the great Nick shows that currently occupy about 45% of my memory capacity, taking up room that would have been put to better use memorizing the Pthagorean Theorum or the periodic table.
A scant few years ago, Nick was a great channel you could park a kid in front of with confidence that he wasn't rotting too many of his brain cells. Now it's just MTV Jr. It's pathetic.

My only exposure to early Nickelodeon was the commercials in the syndicated childrens hours that said, "Follow the Silver Ball to Nickelodeon." I grew up in a poor family and even if we could afford the luxury of cable, at the time cable television would not be available to our neighborhood. Thus, I was denied.
Fast forward to my 28th year of existence. I still live with my parents who are retired, and am earning a wage that is inappropriately microscopic, so I still cannot afford the luxury that is cable. My folks rent out old movies from the library while I buy Super Friends/Justice League DVDs and rent Spongebob Squarepants videos. I am still denied.
Then again, I don't watch much TV to begin with. The internet has become my new thing. :)

Holy shit! Popeye and Son! I saw one episode of that back when ABC Family was "The Family Channel" (Not Fox Family) On a Sunday morning! I thought that show was kinda stupid... I still think it is now.. I remember watching the episode involving the son turning into an evil son, courtesy of drinking something made by Quimby in a science lab... It was so bad.
I second the notion on Classic Nickelodean, before it went to hell and Klasky-Csupo dominated it and a kid with a football head started spanking us with a dominatrix paddle. "Invader Zim" was one of their many better shows. But the classic shows were the f*cking best! I mean, "Ren and Stimpy", "Are you afraid of the dark?" (Classic, not the revamp they did, the older episodes scared the shit out of me then.), "The Adventures of Pete and Pete" (AWESOME DUDDE!) and that show about that dwarf with the red hat.. David! David the Gnome! (That show fuckin' owned back then!) Nickelodean now? Pfft.. They show more Rugrats and some lame ass show called Rocket Power.. Oh yeah and film crossovers which will deem the end of the world! (Rugrats/Wild Thornberries..Ew.) Plus, Snick, more like "Sodomy Saturday" unlike the olden days when you looked forward to it.. Mm.. Ren and Stimpy, how inappropriate. :D
Someday, I hope Nickelodean gets firebombed and they lose all that new crap, exclude Zim and have to play nothing but old stuff and Zim...
I remember having some M.U.S.C.L.E. figures a long time ago, my cousin gave them to me. I had fun with those.. Didn't know what they were until a month or two ago when I read the article about them here...

Now you're making me miss Yesterdayland all over again. Oh, the links I could hunt down for you.....
Anyway a few notes:
1)Muppet Babies, for the 2 of you that don't know, was based on a scene from "The Muppets Take Manhattan", and is probably responsible for all the "X as kids" cartoons, like Flintstone Kids and the more recent Baby Looney Tunes, or the "X with kid" phenomenon that included Popeye and Son (yes, he married the tramp/slut Olive Oil who finally settled for one man instead of chasing every big muscled guy who had yet to try and rape her), Pink Panther and Son, Goof Troop, and Tiny Toons (although they were really mentored by the famous toons, but it still vaguely counts)
2)My MASK Condor has a broken helecopter blade. You know how the one blade is in the pic above? That's how mine is all the time. I have it packed away for now, but I have a picture of it somewhere. I recently took pics of my toy collection as I transfered them to boxes that won't cause more "elemental damage" to the toys in my basement. My Transformers will NEVER be packed away!
3)Mysterious Cities of Gold, You Can't Do That on Television, and Dangermouse were three of the best things Nickelodeon showed back in the day. Anybody else see "Chalky" during the Special Delivery weekend programming block? They also used to air the original "Tommorow People" from England, but I only saw one episode since I didn't have Nick at the time. My grandparents 2 towns away did, which wasn't fair.
4)CBS Storybreak did one thing that annoyed me: CLUTZ. It was one of my favorite books as a kid, but when they adapted it, the family was suddenly African-American and C.L.U.T.Z. himself looked like he seriously worked out compared to the skinny robot in the book illustrations.
And never say anything bad about the original Captain Kangaroo, or I'll drop ping pong balls on you!
5)No, wait, that's all I've got. This has been long enough. But I put a number here, so I have to use it. AH! I read the article on the Magnetic Pac-Man game. I never heard of it! I would have begged for that as a kid. I had a Pac-Man Pocket Game (the thing I know Tomy best for were their Pocket Games). That's still fun to play. They all are!
OK, I'll shut up now.

How many of you kids remember the REAL Mr. Mouth with the yellow head? (not that frog-boy above). My favorite childhood pastimes included launching my (screaming) sister's smurfs into the Mister's... umm.. mouth.
And whoever remembers Pinwheel being on for 2-3 hours obviously isn't as old as me. That sh*t used to be on for like, SIX HOURS in the beginning. That's too much Plus, Minus, and Ebeneezer for anyone to stand. Periodically they'd play the theme song AGAIN and you knew it was finally over when the little kid said "PINWHEEL!!!". Then if you're lucky you got a dose of Today's Special or if unlucky, a trip to Dusty's Treehouse (I think he spent too much time smoking the wood instead of building his treehouse with it... damn 70's hippy TV.

Yeah it was on YTV and CTV in Saskatchewan. It was filmed in Regina I remember. It was about Grandpa Putnam and his daughter Ellen her kids Mark and Katy and bthat Professer Ivan. And they had all these cool adventures at this store that Grandpa owned. I remember the Time Travel episode as well as one with ghosts. It was a very awesome show anbd i wish i had taped it. I hope one day it comes back!!

Matt, you are the mother(bleeping) man! Mobile Armored Strike Kommand! Hell yeah, I used to have that motorcycle, as well as a car that u could transform into a jet! Seriously, u gotta do an article about M.A.S.K., cause those toys kicked major ass! Boy, did I hate that freaking Simon game! I would start playing that thing, and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, the damn thing would start going faster than the freaking speed of light! Oh, for all u Tron fans out there, there's this kick ass game called, Armagetron, and it's a completely free game where u can control ur own Tron cycle, and u have to block out the other cycles on the screen. One other thing, it's all completely in 3-D, which makes it more of a kick ass game!

Heh, great pics! looking forward to downloading the actual ads! Actually, for those of you freaks (like me) who want more Nintendo 8-bit era ads, you should check out Gaming Age's special report on old NES ads (mostly printed but also TV ads) at http://www.gaming-age.com/cgi-bin/specials/special.pl?spec=adspecial&pagenum=1 Just go towards the end of the report (around page 8) for the video ads. You might have seen some here, but the whole thing is great.
Anyway, on we go... I used to have a Pocket Simon (the old black one). Unfortunately, I no longer have it, but I managed to pick up a modern translucid one as well as a cool-looking 1- or 2-player Star Wars ep 1 Simon game, last year in Philly. Someone should tell the people at Hasbro that there should be a volume control on those Simon games! I swear, my neighbors probably know everytime I'm playing Simon!
Nerf balls: I never had a nerf football, but I used to have a Nerf soccer ball (the old orange and black one). Unfortunately, I left it outside one rainy night and it, being a sponge, soaked up the water and dried and fell apart after that. Conclusion: Nerf balls don't like water.

The show about the kindly old beaver was called Poppa Beaver's Story Time, and it aired on NickJr.
After reading a half dozen comments, I have finally remembered Space Cases. Does anyone remember how that show ended, or did it just end sans conclusion?

AHAHAHHA Mortis the Safety Tortoise! The first season or two of Welcome Freshmen rocked! The later ones sucked ass, when they made it less crazy. There were some hilarious skits on that show. I skipped down a lil, but did anyone mention Roundhouse? There's one quote from that show me and my bro always used. "You're at home. It's a family night, and everyone's gathered around it to play Monopoly! You're all having fun when somebody eventually just HAS to say it..."Imagine if all of this were REAL MONEY?" It then went into a skit imagining if that were true
lol my brother and I cracked up at this skit and still use that quote to this day :D

I don't know abou Goof Troop. Actually Goofy's had a son for a while, but until GT he was just referred to as "Goofy Jr." but not Max. BTW, thanks for the info. Like many of you and Today's Special, I could have SWORN that show was a figment of my imagination until someone confirmed it's existance for me.
I don't know how Space Cases ended, but I think the crew finally got off the ship and it just kinda drifted off somewhere. Wat happened to Catalina, though? She and Suzie got swapped out for each other abou midway through the show's run, but did she ever get back?

Hey, I got even more stuff that u could research about, Matt, and possibly do an article about. There was this kids show called, The Great Space Coaster that used to come on TV in the afternoons, as well as one called, The New Zoo Review, both of which are completely and utterly jam packed with the kind of cheese that only the 80's could provide. That, and The Great American Hero, Hardcastle and McCormick, Heart To Heart, and the list goes on and on and on.....
Chestnuts roasted by GraphArtist @ 05/27/2003 06:03 PM EST
Oh, man... the New Zoo Revue was being shown in the mornings on a small-time local station a couple years back. I'd seen it as a kid, but like most things we see as kids, the real thing is worse than the memory. Bit talking animals aren't so bad, but... the folks in the costumes obviously had to use one arm to work the mouths of their beasts; all the animals characters had one arm hanging limply at their sides. It's seriously creepy, like they'd all had strokes. Brrr.

Someone was asking for the words to the theme song of "Puttnam's Prairie Emporium", the small-time Saksatchewan kids show that went national on CTV. Well, here they are:
There's a place we all can go...
It's always been there I know...
They have things there,
you would not believe...
So come on down to Puttnam's,
and you'll see what I mean...
New adventures all the time,
And Mr. Puttnam thinks it's fine,
You can be yourself there,
it's all right to be you,
You will find a friend there,
and a smile or two...
At Puttnam's you'll always feel at home,
At Puttnam's you'll never be alone...
Magic's in the air,
and friends are everywhere...
At Puttnam's Prairie Emporium.
There you go. Now, if I can only find out whatever happened to Katie (Brandie Mickleborough) from that show, my life would be complete.
E!

Just wanted to say how amazed I am that anyone, Maxx, Toilet Duck Fan and E! included, remembers Puttnam's Prairie Emporium, let alone the lyrics to the theme song!! I created, produced and directed that show and the cat puppet is at this moment staring down at me from a nearby shelf wondering if he's ever going to work again!! Thanks to all for the comments and the interest!

To E!(and with a special shout out to Puttnam's Daddy - Hey B!)...that's amazing. I WROTE the freaking lyrics to that theme song and I don't remember them that well. :) Guess my brain is too busy remembering the theme song to the Hilarious House of Frightenstein, instead. But good to know that a little piece of my past is still out there surviving ...like a antibiotic-resistant germ. :) Oh, and as for the question of copies of Puttnam's, I believe - and I think Puttnam's Daddy will concur - that the master tapes of the show were toasted years ago (due to the foresight and wisdom of CTV executives, long may they wave). Perhaps some private copies exist somewhere. I think I still have my Caldicot Cat doll around here somewhere... Cheers!
