07/28/2003 Entry: "Super Mario Ice Cream?"

Heylo. We just got back from the Poconos, along with three garbage bags full of flea market crap and stolen jelly condiments from the many dilapidated diners and convenience stops we found along the way. The jellies sparked a great debate over how "Concord grapes" got their name, segueing sheerly by virtue of rhyme to a discussion about Cheers recurring character, Robin Colcord. The moral? Not much to do in that town -- you drink a lot in the Poconos.

Anyway, there's probably an article waiting to be written around the pictures I took, particularly those from a "Snake and Animal Farm" so unabashedly filthy that it's amazing everything in there wasn't dead. This'll have to wait till later, though -- gotta wrap up this week's "real" articles before I can torment you with the regular stuff. My next Top 11? Alien Invasion Movies. It'll be up tomorrow afternoon. Before I get back to Gort and Metaluna Mutants, there's one small thing I had to show y'all first...

At the Poconos' weekly flea market, an ice cream truck offered the goods: Super Mario Bros. Popsicles. Actually, I thought I was being misled -- the truck was advertising ice pops that haven't been sold in years, so when I asked for a Mario bar, the creature working inside kinda glanced at me with that whole "you're kidding, right?" look. She said she wasn't sure if they "had anymore," which certainly would've been for the best since they're a few years old. After digging through some boxes in the back of the truck, the creature lady emerged with what she swore was "the last Mario pop!" No really, she actually hopped up screaming "look, it's the last Mario pop!" As if I wasn't embarrassed enough just ordering the thing in my mid-20s, now I had creature lady shouting it at the top of her lungs for all of the flea marketing world to hear. I quickly threw a bunch of quarters at her and scurried off, like a skunk thrown into the middle of a busy flea market. I say this with firsthand knowledge -- there really was a skunk in the middle of the flea market.

See? The skunk's crazy owner waltzed through the event with her head held high and a goddamned SKUNK on a purdy red leash. Honestly, this alone made the entire weekend and all of its many wallet-crashing moments worth it. Still, kinda sucks that I saw the skunk before the flea market's other trump card -- The Polaroid Monkey...

Yup, some old guy rented out a booth so people could pay six bucks for a Polaroid shot with his pet monkey. The monkey, by the way, had let go of so much urine in that small booth that the guy had to keep his feet up on a chair to avoid getting all pissified. Really, really depressing sight. He wouldn't let me take a picture of the monkey, insisting that I shell out the six bucks for a "professional" shot. This was as close as I could get without him noticing. I'm not sure if there's any laws that'd make leaving monkeys out in the hot sun to piss all over themselves illegal, but it certainly seemed a bit off. Oh well, monkeys and skunks are prime candidates to brighten up any flea market. Back to Mario...

There it is. The bubble gum nose was so incredibly stale that my entire jaw collapsed upon trying to chew it, but at least the ice itself remained lemony and delicious. I've gotta get back to the articles now, but I didn't want anyone to go through Monday without the chance to see leashed skunks and Mario pops. That's my contribution to society for today, eat your heart out Mudda Teresa.

The Ice Cream man around my area still sells that Super Mario Bros. Ice Cream. I certainly didn't feel sick afterwards. It was a pretty delicious treat, considering it must've been at least 5 years old.

Seriously, what the hell do you do with smoked bones? I can only imagine that they're some kind of dog treat. I can't imagine they're for human consumption. Course I can't imagine buying shrimp from the guys who sell it from coolers in the back of a pickup truck on a corner a few blocks from my apartment either, but damned if others don't do just that.

I love the bizarre synchronicity that appears in some of the things Matt posts. First he posted a battle between the Hulksicle and the Spongebobsicle, and now Hulk and Spongebob appear together again. This shit works on so many levels.

I have always wanted to get one of those novelty Popsicles as a kid but my mom told me we could not afford it. Which was not true she just did not want to spoil us rotten. The only flea market I have ever liked is one in San Antonio. There is a stand that sells tripas taco with guacamole. If you wondering what tripas are they are cow intestines which are fried till crispy or they are chewy.

I don't know if anyone else remembers these, but way back in the day (think late eighties/early nineties) they used to sell Super Mario ice cream sandwiches. I remember them because the local convenience store had a promotion where you could win a Super Mario backpack (bright neon orange) by buying these ice cream sandwiches. After entering few times, the store owner pulled the backpack down from the display and gave it to me. Apparently no one else had entered, or even bought any of the Super Mario ice crem treats.

Uh...hate to tell you this, Matt, but I saw a Mario ice cream bar at my local mall today. It was identical to the one that you had in your article. The only discernible difference was that the sign was blue and had a picture of Mario in a go-kart instead of on Yoshi. The thing is, the food court that the ice cream was sold in is only two or three years old.

The trashy neighbors from down the street had a pet skunk on a leash for some time when I was a kid. Really, they were (and from the looks of it still are) trashy.

I don't know what they did to keep it from spraying, but I think since it was domesticated and all, that it wouldn't spray anyone because it didn't fear humans.

My mother had a pet skunk when she was young. Somehow they catch them and have the stink gland removed. That said, I always wondered if it didn't still smell some because my friend had a ferret and had it's stink gland removed and I couldn't tell the difference. That thing stunk.

As I understand it skunks actually make pretty good pets. They are domesticly raised specificly to be pets, it is illegal in NJ and I think pretty much everywhere else to just trap a skunk from the wild. They are carefully bred so there is no chance of rabies, and indeed they are de-skunked and nuetered so they don't attack people ether by tooth or by smell.

Blimey, I'd forgotten all about Bucky O'Haire! I remember how ambiguous I always felt watching it. In some way I liked it enough to feel compelled to see each episode through when I didn't forget it was on, even though I'd feel deeply ashamed for doing so.

I've since repressed most of my memories having anything to do with Bucky.

A friend of mine had a pet albino skunk named Ollie, who was just about the most adorable thing I've ever seen. For the record, a skunk with it's stink gland removed smells far better than a ferret. Skunks are natually pretty clean animals, while ferrets are just stretched out rats basically.

On a slightly related tangent, does anyone remember a cartoon about a group of monkeys in outer space, who fought a sentient nebula and a cyborg chimp with interchangable brains? I believe it was called Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys, and was one of my favorite cartoons of the last 10 years.

The "Guile/ Sgt.Slaughter" figure is actually Corporal Kirschner..he was an old jobber in the WWF back in the mid 80s...he never amounted to much..his biggest match was a "flag" match with Nikolai Volkoff at Wrestlemania 2...I think he's dead now...oh well..and I think a friend of mine still has a Bucky O'Hare action figure in his basement somewhere..I hated that show...I'll shut up now

Dang, I loved Bucky O'Hare. I used to have a toy of his spaceship...if my memory doesn' deceive me it had this sort of rubber bubble thing on the bottom, and you would smoosh the baddies with the ship...like on the show. Uh oh. Really tired...must..sleeep

Wasn't Bucky's ship called "The Righteous Indignation"? Cool name for a ship. That guy in the upper right I think is Phoebus from Disney's "Hunchback" movie.

I think the old WWF wrestlers were cool and over the top with cheesy goodness. Who could forget Junkyard Dog, Andre the Giant, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, Sgt. Slaughter, Capt. Lou Albano, The Iron Sheik, & of course Randy "Macho Man" Savage(known to the young generation today as the Slim Jim guy). The cartoon show was a blast!

I think Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys may have been on the forefront of the recent resurgence of semi-decent cartoons. It and Mummies Alive made me think that maybe kids would start being exposed to some decent characters and storylines again, as well as designs and art that weren't intentionally made to look crappy like all of the Nicktoons at the time...

Nicktoons are for the most part awful, with the notable exception of Invader Zim.

I think that Vasquez has said that it isn't coming back and he's sort of glad, he'll probably focus on his comics, perhaps another Squee? I guess if your used to being in complete control of what you're working in then it may be hard working with Nickelodeon and hence Viacom. Gir is still the best.
As for Mario icecream (or popsicle if your going to be a dick!) I see it sold all the time by Mexican raspa dealers, lots of other old frozen treats too, everything from Super Mario to Sailor Moon and Sabrina the teenage witch. As for wwf icecream bars they are the best and are still made today.
Also Bucky O'Haire was a comic and I think was put out by Neal Adams who is most famous for Greenlantern and his work on Deadman. And the last time I saw Ironsheik was at the gimmick battle royal at WM in Houston. Zim:"Why did you empty out your fuel supply?!" Gir:"To make room for the tuunnnaaaa."

Does anyone remember a cartoon called Mighty Max? It was around about the same time as Captain Simian. It was about a kid with a magic hat that allowed him to jump through these magic portals, accompanied by a big warrior named Norman and an owl looking guy who was a Lumurian scholar. REALLY smart stuff for a goofy kid's cartoon, and often shockingly violent.

I recall one episode where the troll who killed Norman's father resurfaced. There was one scene where they came upon a cabin where the troll had slaughtered a family...they didn't show the carnage, but just the fact that they implied there was a dead family inside that cabin was pretty intense.

The episode ended with Norman and the troll face to face, and Norman getting so enraged he was kicking ass, driving the troll back towards a cliff. His friends give him the usual "If you kill him you'll just sink to his level speech". He replies "I can live with that" and knocks him off the cliff. This was back when I was on a lot of drugs, so I may have hallucinated that, but I don't think I'm too far off. This was a weekday morning syndicated cartoon based on an extremely obscure toyline, so seeing this kind of death and destruction was pretty hardcore.

BTW does anyone recall the double dragon cartoons and the the very short lived battletoads cartoon. The double dragon cartoon was interesting but it lacked good characters. The battletoads cartoon just ruined alot for me, like how the battletoads came to be and shit.

Yes, the DD cartoon. I thought it was pretty good for a video game cartoon esp. considering the source but then they brung in the Shadow Khan and they were always getting upgrades and then they just stopped making them.
The Battle Toads cartoon wasn't quite up to the level though, would have been nice if they did a crossover.
As for Mighty Max it was an excellent cartoon. My favorite moment is when the warrior dons a helmet and faces a dragon that he has battled once before, the dragon asks him what he goes by know, the warrior then lists off former names like Thor, Hercules, Arthur, etc. and then says in perfect, dead pan voice "They now call me... Norman", hilarious. I have to disagree with the Hellpop above who said it was based on an obscure toy line. There was nothing obscure about that line of action filled diorama/playsets. It had a fast food tie in with one of the major burger chains that's not obscure. What is obscure is the fact that Mighty Max had a female version but I can't remember the name, they were basically Max toys but the rock monsters and lava would be replaced with unicorns and ponds. Girls usually get the shaft when it comes to toys.
The MC Hammer cartoon was pretty popular for an ABC cartoon and had a longer run then the idiotic New Kids On the Block cartoon, think Saved By the Bell crossed with The Monkees but with an extra chromosome. Earthworm Jim was excellent as well and has the distinction of being the first cartoon I remember showing haggis. Freakazoid was also very funny but every cartoon that comes from Spielberg's studio is awsome. Biker Mice wasn't terrible but nothing to write home about seemed a lot like TMNT to me. None of these cartoons compared to Rocko's Modern Life, perhaps the greatest thing that ever came out of Nick and that includes You Can't Do That On Television and Roundhouse.

Freakazoid was one of my all time favorites!!! Did anyone ever watch Histeria?? it was another Speilberg cartoon, more recent though. I used to ditch school early to be home at 3 to watch it.

Mighty Max suddenly reminds me of another weird old cartoon I remember, Fantastic Max... used to love it. Basically it was about this alien who could do magic by swirling his antenna, but when trying to past some test or another on his home planet he messed up and somehow ended up on earth... and this little baby called Max found him, and while playing with the alien's antenna (the alien was called FX, I think) he became super-smart. And then the alien brought to life a thing Max made out of blocks, and Max and FX and the block dude sailed across the galaxy in a spaceship the alien made in Max's sandbox. Weird, weird, weird stuff. But it was fun to watch, and FX's magic had cool music that went with it.

My God. I love bringing up old cartoons. I remember the old Double Dragon Cartoons. Kind of sucked. I also remember the Battletoads cartoon. Really sucked. I hated Histeria. Don't know why, just did. I loved Super Dave Osborne's cartoon. I think it was called Super Dave! or something like that. Don Coyote was great. With Sancho Panda. None of that could hold a candle to Transformers, though. You must be kidding... Mummies Alive was a massive pile of crap. It was a total knockoff of Gargoyles, only with all the redeeming qualities (endearing characters, intricate plotlines that are still easy to follow, quality animation, etc.) removed, then wrapped in shit and sandwiched between shit wafers.

Gawd that show sucked.

Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys was pretty awesome, though. Had a definite Bucky O'Hare vibe to it, only even more surreal.

Super Mario Bros., Samurai Pizza Cats, Ghostbusters, Freakazoid, Garfield, Earthworm Jim, Beetle Juice, Rocko's Modern Life, Ninja Turtles(the original, not the gay new series), Inspector Gadget, Eek the Cat, Gargoyles...

I don't quite know what to think of Mummies Alive. I think the characters were real good, and that's about it. If they just were more creative with the show, and didn't put anything cheesy in, it probably could do a little better than it's doing now... than again... I just don't know.
