10/07/2003 Entry: "Picture Party Volume 81919191919191919."

EDIT: The Countdown's been updated with two more days worth of entries -- go check out the ghost pears and my tribute to "Ghoul-Aid," the spookiest Kool-Aid you ever did see. Also, quick Top 11 for UGO this week, this time about sitcom spinoffs. Henjoi.

In the process of churning out these articles, a lot of stuff doesn't make the final cut. There's been more half-written articles than I can remember, and my various hard drives over the years have been littered with hundreds of pictures meant for use on X-E. With my most recent comp (I think I've gone through five since starting the site, wooo), I'm trying to keep the free space high and the crap junk low, so before these go to the recycling bin (wooo x2), here's some pics that were this close to appearing in an article...

Yehuh.

Should we discuss the new Ugo Top Eleven here?

Thank you Matt for confirming my belief that the Tortellis actually existed. I remembered that from my childhood, just Dan Hedaya, his annoying blonde wife, and the credits that showed them on a slot machine. Only it disappeared before becoming a hit (which was probably a good thing) and I always thought of it as some kind of phantom show that I wasn't sure was real or not, one of those things I dreamed of in my childhood and assumed true. But it WAS true. Not that it's anything important, it just makes my life a little more complete.

Well shit, what do those Nestle Overloads taste like? I've always come THIS CLOSE to buying a pack just for the sheer novelty of having seven kinds of candy crammed into one package.

Chestnuts roasted by Marc @ 10/08/2003 01:03 AM EST

I bought some of the overloads for my husband. He said they weren't nearly as good together as each one is separately.

How can an article that features a Legend of Zelda overworld map be unworthy of posting?

Thanks for sparing us Triple-H's ugly stoneage mug on that icecream bar.

I wonder what the article might've been, but THANK GAWD that face doesn't show.

I know you're joking and making with the funny ha-has and everything, but... *sniffle*

Christ, I remember that episode of Growing Pains (because I saw it recently, and I never watch GP, so good timing): I had no idea it was a setup for a spinoff, though. I just thought that it was another opportunity for I'm-Bad-But-Only-In-Relation-To-A-Carebear pussy-ass Mike to be a big pussy-ass like the big pussy-ass that he is. Yeah. Not a fan of the Growing Pains. (What's a pussy-ass, you ask? It's "pussy" with "ass" tacked on to denigrate Mike even more than he would have been denigrated by calling him a mere "pussy.")

Know what's amazing about Matt? He pays for bandwidth that allows me to bitch about an 80s sitcom character of no consequence.

Um... in the Ghoul-Aid article... was there dust and cat hair floating on the top of your Ghoul-Aid? Or is my screen strategically scratched up to appear that way to my retarded eyes?

I love spinoffs nearly as much as I love Madballs and Tabasco Chipolte sauce on reduced fat Pringles so without further ado...

1. "The Ropers" was a pretty good show (think Married with Children type "Stanley can't get it up" jokes for half an hour) and most people loved Mr Furley.

2. Ugh Brady Brides was bad (the pilot had a giant stuffed purple gorilla) but was less edgy than the "One Day at a Time" spinoff where Velerie Bertanelli and Makensie Phillips shared an apartment with their husbands.

4.I thought that wop on Friends looked familliar. I saw this show a couple of times. Did they have a restaurant or something?

5.Never heard of it

6. Actually, she worked for a Verteranarian.

7.Sucked out loud, but the last couple of seasons of Three's Company did as well. I always assumed they got married.

8.Trapper John MD was a good show. One time he prescribed medical Marijuana to a patient and even had a plant growing in his office instead of that winnebago he lived in in the parking lot of the hospital. Better than "Afer MAsh"

9.I loved the Tortellies. The best episode "I'll fix your TV or I'll eat a bug."

Chestnuts roasted by klatubaradanikto @ 10/08/2003 11:13 AM EST

Holy fuck, Klat. I actually...remember...that episode. That's the only thing I can remember, come to think of it. Didn't it involve a commercial with a guy in a giant cockroach suit, too?

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 10/08/2003 11:18 AM EST

"Just the ten of us" This show was monumental for the fact that HEATHER LANGENKAMP of Nightmare on Elm Street fame, played the religious daughter. She was proabaly my first real big crush, unfortunately, even though bieng the best known actress on the show, she got little screen time. But I still tuned in every week hoping to catch a glimpse. mmmmmm, Heather Langenkamp.

Chestnuts roasted by sweepthelegjohnny @ 10/08/2003 12:14 PM EST

Yes. Nick got into a competition with another TV repairman that led to each one eating something more disgusting than the other on their commercials.

Better Stupid Spinoffs
"Enos" - From "The Dukes of Hazzard" Nothing like bumpkin cop tryin to make it in the big city. Just ask Barney Fife and Sherrif Lobo.

"Flo's Yellow Rose" - From "Alice"
Flo ("kiss my grits" anyone?)leaves Mel's Diner and runs a Truck Stop/Bar. Too late for the 70's trucker/CB Radio popularity, but right on time to cash in on the "Urban Cowboy" linedancing/mechanical bullriding fad. Plus "Alice" got new hotness Belle.

"Fish" - from "Barney Miller" Not really that bad, but how far is a sitcom starring Abe Vigoda wrangling orphans in an apartment going to go.

"Green Acres" - from "Petticoat Juction" from "Beverly Hillbillys" is arguably the best spinoff ever.

Chestnuts roasted by klatubaradanikto @ 10/08/2003 12:44 PM EST

I never knew a Married...With Children spinoff was possible, let alone actually existed. Talk about obscure.

However, you forgot one of the most prolific spinoffs ever: Family Matters, the unlikely spinoff to Perfect Strangers! Harriot Winslow was actually on PS, which begat a show about her and Carl and the whole family, which somehow morphed into the sad tale of this family being tortured to no end by the beast known as Urkel.

Chestnuts roasted by BS @ 10/08/2003 12:48 PM EST

Hey Matt, on the Kool-Aid F.A.Q. there is a recipe to make Play-Doh from Kool-Aid. That was taylor-made for you!

Also, in WAWA's here in Philly, they have this new Halloween candy by the registers called "Dracula's Blood". It just a test tube with red liquid in it. If you want some let me know. Seems like something you'd like.

Chestnuts roasted by Y2JB78 @ 10/08/2003 02:02 PM EST

Oh. My. God. I loved Just the Ten of Us. The redheaded sister was Cindy, stupid and hot. Marie was Heather Langenkamp, the religious one. Anyone remember *the* episode, the one where the sisters started a singing group but Marie was the only one with real talent? And she wouldn't join because of Jesus or something, and her Mom finally talked her into it and she burst out the Madonna garb (uh, Madonna the artist, not the mother of God)? Coach Lubbock was a sex machine!

Chestnuts roasted by Queen of Ill Repute @ 10/08/2003 02:09 PM EST

Of course, Fraiser would be a more obvious spin off of Cheers, but I like these more obscure ones better.

Chestnuts roasted by Electric Penguin @ 10/08/2003 03:07 PM EST

Matt, I'm surprised you found "Empty Nest" in greater quality than "Golden Palace". I mean, with the exception of the set-up episode, the Golden Girls may have showcased the characters once every ten episodes-and two thirds the time it was their dratted dog. It was a good show, but pretty baseless.

Chestnuts roasted by Saf @ 10/08/2003 03:21 PM EST

i actually remember watching Top of the Heap. one episode was where they both went to a rich person's party, pretending to be rich, in order to marry rich women. if i remember correctly, i believe Joey Lauren Adams played the slutty underage neighbor who was always trying to get in Matt LeBlanc's pants.

Chestnuts roasted by randy @ 10/08/2003 03:46 PM EST

I'm surprised no "Happy Days" spinoffs made it to this list, that show must have the record for having shows spun off. For the record, my favorite spinoff shows are "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Batman Beyond". There's probably more, I probably just don't remember or realize they're spun off from something.

I'm still waiting for someone to create the ultimate spinoff derived from "Star Trek", "Law & Order", "CSI", and the David E. Kelley universe ("Ally McBeal", "The Practice", etc.)

Awwww we missed an exciting adventure of Darth Maul and Billy Crystal trying to navigate their way through Hyrule? That couldn't have been anything but a great article in the making.

Why is it that in every pic I can see a great article in the making? And is that last one The making of Madd Matt, step one: the clothes?

Chestnuts roasted by TOP1214 @ 10/08/2003 04:26 PM EST

Great job Matt. But you better get something special planned for the next Top 11. Its the Eleventh one you know. People are very ceremonious about these things.

Chestnuts roasted by The Ponderer @ 10/08/2003 05:25 PM EST

Honestly Matt, being a huge Zelda fan myself, I think it would've been hilarious to see Darth Maul and that thing from Monsters, Inc. try and figure out how to play Zelda. Your articles of this type are always hilarious.

Just imagine. Two characters from movies I hate trying to play a video game that I love. (Not to mention the fact that that map is a classic.) If that's the map that I recall from the first issue of Nintendo Power, and if they're trying to complete the first quest, they're going to run into a lotta problems since that map is for the second quest.

Darth Maul: "Where's the fucking sixth level!"
Monster (I don't know his name):
"It says it's right here ont the map. But all that takes you to is some traitorous Moblin who wants to give you his life savings."

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 10/08/2003 08:10 PM EST

Hey, I remember Top of the Heap. They worked as supers in an apartment building and the dad always had get rich quick schemes. Joey Lauren Adams played horny underage neighbor Mona.

I'd also like to mention that "the ugly one" on Just The Ten of Us went on to lose 40 or 50 pounds and play evil seductresses on Savannah and Melrose Place.(Well, her character on Savannah was evil. Don't know about her character on Melrose Place.)

Worst spinoff of all time award has to go to Yu-Gi-Oh:Duel Monsters.
For those of you not familiar with it, the original YuGiOh was more like a Junior High crimefighting Freddy Krueger type thing. Although popular, there wasn't much merchandising oppurtunity, so the publishers coerced the author into taking a card game from one of the more popular older issues and turning it into the entire point of the series. For some retarded reason WB decided to skip the earlier good episodes when importing it to America.

Which is why, when I tuned in a few years ago expecting to see Yami Yugi inflicting some penalty games, I instead was "treated" to scenes of kids resolving conflicts with a particularly retarded version of Magic:The Gathering.

I mean, it would have been forgivable if the game was any good. Pokemon was crap but at least the games were good. But Yu-Gi-Oh is probably the worst CCG I've seen since Wyvern.

Chestnuts roasted by Regault @ 10/08/2003 08:59 PM EST

I'd also like to point out that I know of at least two different times MWC filmed lead-in episodes for spinoffs whose pilot never aired.

One time, Kelly went to interview for a job at a diner, and the episode focussed entirely around the diner's staff.

Another time, Marcy helped out a local college radio station.

Chestnuts roasted by Regault @ 10/08/2003 09:01 PM EST

Not many comments on the spin-offs, since I missed most of them and the only one not suggested that I knew of was already taken - "Family Matters," from one of my (still - sorry, I'm a hopeless slapstick fan) favorite shows, "Perfect Strangers." I've only seen one of the FM episodes made after 1992, so I'll reserve any comments I have on how much Urkel took over that show. When I was still watching, it was a fairly normal cross between "Full House" (family warmth) and "Perfect Strangers" (occasionally weird slapstick).

Of the top 11, the only one I remember close to well is "The Ropers," which I actually enjoyed. I don't remember it well now, but it used to turn up every now and then in reruns. You'd think I'd have fond memories of "Just the 10 of Us", since it was one of the most famous of the ABC TGIF shows, but I totally don't recall it.

As for "YuGhOh!", in any form, the few episodes I've seen have been kinda complicated for me...but my little brother and most of his friends (and many of my older friends as well) love it.

Enjoying the pictures. In the last one, matt has a kinda sexy unshaven thing gonna. Well, he does for all of them... but you can see his pretty, innocent eyes in the last. XD

Hey, I would've liked to see the return of Legless Maul to these articles! I liked reading about him playing Candyland.

Chestnuts roasted by John @ 10/09/2003 03:05 AM EST

Wow. I'd always prided myself for having seen at least a few episodes of all of the All In the Family spin-offs. (Wasn't Good Times a spin-off of The Jeffersons? A spinoff of a spinoff: Dynomite!)

I'm SHOCKED that they gave Gloria a spinoff. And Mike leaves her?!? Actually, that last part isn't too shocking.

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 10/09/2003 03:42 PM EST

I think Good Times was a spinoff of Maude which was a spinoff of All in the Family (The mother in "Good Times" was Maude's maid and Maud was Edith's cousin.)

If I'm wrong let me know.

Chestnuts roasted by Snchpnz @ 10/09/2003 10:46 PM EST

Trapper John MD rules. I can't believe Nick from Family Ties had his own show, if only for one episode...i'm always picking up new, valuable knowledge here.

Chestnuts roasted by Goggles Pizano @ 10/10/2003 12:33 PM EST

Actually, Mike left Gloria before the end of All in the Family. They moved to California late in the show's run, and there's an episode in which Archie and Edith go to visit them, not knowing about the separation. Gloria and Mike don't want the two of them to know and hide the whole thing to comedic results.

Chestnuts roasted by Ryan @ 10/11/2003 02:22 PM EST

cool photos... especially the one with the Darth Maul torso and Monsters Inc. Mike (was that his name?) looking over the Nintendo Power map. that very same "complete strategy map of the overworld for the second quest of Zelda" is, to this day, still on my wall :)

Chestnuts roasted by zann @ 10/11/2003 06:51 PM EST

Was that map really for the 2nd quest? Maybe I bought my copy of Zelda a little late, but they started to include a complete map of the Overworld and help in the first quest (including a complete map of level 1).
