12/02/2003 Entry: "Advent Calendar: December 2nd, 2003."

The Advent Calendar has been updated for December 2nd, with a look back at one of 7-UP's holiday-themed "Spot" commercials, Pepperidge Farm's red and green "Goldfish" crackers, and a celebration of Mista Snowman's new top hat. You'll never realize how much you miss Spot till you see him in action again, so yes, there's a video with the review. Gotta jet for now, and tonight I've got to work on the UGO holiday toons Top 11. Check the Calendar tomorrow for another update.

I miss those little Spot dudes. They were full of fun and whimsy, and better than the "Mostly Inoffensive Black Comedian" thing they have going now.

Though nothing beats the Coca Cola Polar Bears. NOTHING. And I am a (Diet) Pepsi drinker almost exclusively.

At least CGI mascots don't have to look back at stupid things they did with shame, unlike the two 7 Up Yours! guys, one of which is already on track to have an acting career as sad as Jerry "My Secret Identity)" O' Connell's...

(Not that anyone but me even remembers that little show..)

I remember "My Secret Identity".... I liked it better when it was called "The Greatest American Hero".

Ralph Hinkley Rules!

I still have the Spot videogame...'tis awful

After viewing the commercial, why in the WORLD did this kids' family leave the window open. Its clearly cold outside, and an open window just begs for thieves to come in and steal little timmy's presents.

But it was still a great commercial! :) They should bring the Spots back. And I don't even like 7up.

I remember the Spot video game, and the Noid game, and Ronald McDonald game. What's with all the mascot games? Anyway, I surely do miss the Spots, and I need to get some of those Xmas fishies.

Man, I loved those 7-up guys, too. Where did they go? Bet they died on set and they just aren't telling us. Like the Taco Bell dog or that guy who played George on Seinfeld.

And... If I heard a noise on Christmas, I'd get my shotgun! Wait, I don't have a shotgun... Well, I'd get ready to take down some fool with my Kung-Foo moves of doom! I wouldn't go down and play with my little fire truck or whatever, I'd be ready to swing!

The guy who played george on Seinfeld is now shilling stuff for KFC, the world's nastiest chicken place ever. Or maybe that's just the kind we get around here.

I am humming the "My Secret Identity" song to myself right now. Jerry O'Connel also played the fatass in the movie "Stand By Me." I'm too non-motivated to even try to look up what else he might've been in because, who cares?
I am so glad Mista Snowman got a hat. Now he can cover up his lump. It'd royally suck, though, if all the advent boxes contained was stuff for the snowman.
On a slightly different note, I have not been able to get those damn Snata 900 commercials out of my head all day. And tonight I had a class so I am sitting there trying to focus when something popped into my head. Something scary and often repeated by my brother: "Boo! Did I scare you? Well, if you like to be scared, call 1-900-" and that's all I remember...but it's the damn Haloween commercial someone mentioned on that blog earlier.

Ahh, I, too, recall the Spots, up to and including this particular ad. I have to admit, I also miss them. The little guys were, while not up there with the Coca-Cola bears and "Pepsi-the Choice of a New Generation," amusing in their own right.

I don't know what other "Spot" games might have been like, but I think Cool Spot on the Sega Genesis looked pretty sweet, with some of the most detailed backgrounds for any 16-bit game, at least prior to Donkey Kong Country.

Also, speaking of advent calendars, am I the only person whom immediately thought of Matt during the advent calendar scenes in Bad Santa? (And why is the boy's father Neelix?)

Chestnuts roasted by Steve Brandon @ 12/03/2003 03:00 AM EST

Steve, how was that flick? I've seen nothing but good reviews. Seems like a good stoner movie.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 12/03/2003 03:03 AM EST

Bad Santa is good cynical Christmas fun in the tradition of Scrooged and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, though, I have to say, the title character is rotten, but not really all that mean, if that makes any sense at all, and the kid in the film is mentally unbalanced, but not unlikable. And, if you're someone like me whom fully admits to liking Christmas and not in an ironic way, actually, there's very few barbs aimed at the big day itself. It doesn't hold up Christmas as a whole as a target of ridicule, or, contrary to what you may have heard, the Santa Claus myth either, just mall Santas and a limited range of targets revolving around the Christmas rush. It's not a movie you leave thinking the writers must really hate Christmas, just the "schmaltz" and false sentimentality associated with Christmas entertainment, not that "schmaltz" is always unwelcome... I also liked Elf, which is very sweet in spots.

Well, in short, I think, when it comes to making untraditional Christmas satires, there is an extremely fine line between irreverence and disrespect, and Bad Santa treads that line very carefully.

As for getting stoned... well, I say, stick with the G.I. Joe episode where Shipwreck goes to the island of melting people. Or the one where they go to Antarctica and find the "Cobra Recreational Base number three, where they can play table tennis and swim in the Cobra Commander gymnasium, eat lunch in the Destro dining room or watch the Cobra Cuties in the Zartan entertainment center." Elf would be a better stoner movie, at least during the North Pole scense.

While the current 7-Up ads can be funny, it would be awesome if they brought back Spot. They could come up with a "Behind the Ads" sob story to explain where he's been.

*At the height of his fame, Spot was going through a pound of coke a day. Add that with his alcohol abuse and the women and it was a recipe for disaster. Spot checked himself into Betty Ford shortly after the "accident".*

Chestnuts roasted by marv @ 12/03/2003 07:26 AM EST

They could have a bunch of the Spots kidnap the current 7up spokesman and force feed him that DNL crap. Who needs minty 7up? I have to admit that the Spots were one of the enjoyable ones for sure.

Chestnuts roasted by Killer Duck @ 12/03/2003 10:32 AM EST

I thought that snowman looked odd. He reminded me of the cracker jack boy, like he was wearing a jaunty sailor hat. I didnt even think that we were being set up for accesories

Chestnuts roasted by allicat @ 12/03/2003 10:52 AM EST

They did bring back the spot for one last commercial. The new spokesperson was talking to him and Spot was just real pissy and kept saying things like "you got me fired and took my job". I can't remember the exact context of the commercial but somebody's got to know what I'm talking about.

Chestnuts roasted by D @ 12/03/2003 11:27 AM EST

Spot, Spot, Spot......
You truly were a hero. i used to sit in class all day long and try to be all red and round......Spot was my role model, and i think we all would do pretty well by acting more like him.....W.W.S.D.?

Chestnuts roasted by Dave-O @ 12/03/2003 06:03 PM EST

The Spot video game sucked? What the hell are you talking about? Perhaps you're referring to Spot game for Genesis, cause the Spot game for NES ruled. In fact, we still pull it out every now and then. It was basically an Othello (the board game) rip-off, but it was 4-players! Do you recall how awesome it was that 4 players could play a Nintendo game?!

As for the Noid NES game, we had that too. I remember it actually being a decent side-scroller aside from those pizza-eating transitions.

the 7-up commercial was great. No matter what they do to those goldfish they taste and look just as good as before.

(note: the website linked in my name isn't mine, but the official NORAD tracking site to find ol' St. Nick Christmas Eve. Everyone should see it!)

I miss those little Spot guys. I used to have one of the window clingers on my mirror. They were such fun.

I know there was a Kool-Aid-Man video game for the old Atari 2600, but I never played it. I'm thinking that's the first time a spokescharacter had a video game.

How is Jerry O'Connell's acting career sad? He's a great actor, been in many of my favorite movies. Sliders was an awesome show, Mission to Mars was a very big hit as well.
