Ahhh, the good ol' Christmas fallout. Everything always seems a little off for a few days after Christmas; it's some kind of immobilizing lull that we all fall into before prying ourselves out to get drunk on New Year's Eve. It didn't really hit me too hard this year -- I became way too busy in December to even realize how close Christmas was, so it just kinda came and went. Yes, I caught the Christmas Story marathon. I didn't beat my personal record, but I think we scored 4-5 full viewings.
On top of finishing the Advent Calendar, I had to get my three print articles done on Christmas Eve -- this kept me swamped till around 4 PM, at which point I had to jet into the shower and outta the house. We got to my sister's around six, drank lots of wine, made sure to steal enough rumaki to last us till 2007, and by 2 AM, we were home. Christmas Day was spent at my girlfriend's brother's house, with a side trip to my parents' to see everyone who couldn't make the Eve party. Sound like a mess? Oh yeah, it was. Christmas night was spent with our friends at a bar in a Chinese restaurant -- one of our newer traditions from recent years. We were the only people in the place, downing Zombies and thanking the hosts repeatedly for letting us smoke despite NY's stupid bar laws.
Anyways, it was fun. Hope yours was the same. More importantly, here's some of the stuff I got. Keep in mind, I come from a huge family. This might seem like an impressive haul to the untrained, but I had to give out just as many gifts. Actually, since my siblings have spawned 14,000 children, I had to give out eighty times as many gifts. That said, this was an excellent year for free stuff. I nailed practically an entire new wardrobe, which is doubly nice as I've been wearing the same pair of jeans for the past, oh, year. I don't think anyone needs to see pictures of my clothes, so here's most of everything else. A couple of choice items are stuffed too far under the tree for me to dig out at the moment without topping it over, but here's the rest...
Click "more," you goats.
DVD player. Huzzah.
Star Wars books. I lost these novels and needed new ones -- "Tales From Jabba's Palace" is great fun for fans of the movie. I never got too into the extended Star Wars Universe stuff, but these are kept simple enough for casual fans to follow. All of the "Tales" novels take minor characters from the movies, providing them with neat little stories that either explain their origin or, you know, how they blew up.
Yep, my family's on to me.
This thing is great. It's sort of like sitting on a warm, dying animal. Its death rattles keep your back soothed and your ass toasty.
Original TMNT movie one-sheet, framed. My girlfriend found this at some old pharmacy. We check those places all the time -- always full of hidden treasures. Plus, I've been going absolutely batshit trying to find any last vestiges of Pine Brothers' cherry cough drops. I used to live on the things. Now I'll have to live on my TMNT poster. Sucks, cause it's not cherry flavored.
I don't want to say too much about the above item, since I'll be doing an article on it soon. Suffice to say, it's my new favorite thing in the world.
Stripe bobblehead thing. I got the Gizmo version last year. Now my life is complete. Woooo.
I'm including some of the woman's stuff for posterity's sake -- here's some of the Care Bears shit I handed over this year. That makes the total number of plush Care Bear dolls in our apartment 52,002. 52,003 if you count the dirty bootleg we won in Seaside.
More Care Bears madness. It's some kind of Care Bears Christmas tree/giant snowglobe, and whether you're a CB fan or not, it rocks. The top of the tree has a hollow tube that constantly sprays little styrofoam snowballs, while the tree itself has ten trillion fiberoptics that dazzle all onlookers with every color of the rainbow. The Care Bears are also present, spinning around the tree in a fit of holiday cheer. Pretty cool and pretty purdy.
A TV/VCR combo, mostly for use in conjunction with the movie reviews I do on the site. See, it's a pain in ass to walk all the way to the other side of the room. Now I never have to leave this chair. I'm thoroughly convinced that, in time, man will evolve and drop the legs entirely. We'll just be bulbous lumps with thirty fingers on each of our six hands.
More Care Bears stuff for the woman. She loves her Care Bears.
My sister gave us enough quesadilla equipment to cook for Mexico in its entirety.
At the same pharmacy, my g/f located a bootleg Trapper Keeper and assorted TMNT folders. Damn, I used to have most of 'em, too. Interestingly enough, the folders range in production dates from 1989 to 1993. You can totally see the downfall of the original Ninja Turtles -- they looked as we all love to remember 'em in '89, but by '93, every damn one of them was either carrying some goofy instrument or wearing hip hop clothes. I prefer my Turtles naked and unhip.
My very first Stretch Screamer. Can't believe it took this long.
If you've ever wondered what a person like me does to relax, you're looking at it up above. My collection of animal books/encyclopedias numbers in the very high dozens. They're practically the only books I've ever read cover to cover. You'd think that someone who writes for a living might broaden their horizons by reading a bit, but what can I say? I'm uneducated, and I like using the same words over and over again.
On the upside, I know a thing or two about how wolf spiders mate and care for their young. It ain't pretty.
This was one of the woman's main gifts from me -- a silver and topaz bracelet. Or, as I announced it to everyone, "a real silver bracelet with real topaz -- it's all real real real." I'm adamant about stressing that "real" part. It's real I swear.
We had a few things that had to be exchanged -- shown above was what we got instead with the Toys 'R' Us store credit. Since Christmas is dead and gone, these gigantic Rudolph toys were 50% off. "Bumble's Reform" is a personal fave, but let's not discount the big ol' Rudolph, complete with a light-up nose.
I picked these 12" G.I. Joe toys up with store credit, too -- I've wanted that Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow two-pack for a long time, and yes, it's awesome. You'll be seeing these fellows in an article soon.
Oh -- since we had to make room for all of this crap, a lot of my Advent Calendar schtuff had to get shoved on the wall unit. Not the most attractive display in the world, but at least it's festive.
Hope everyone had a great holiday -- if you're kinda here-and-there with the net during the holiday week, I'll be proactive and wish you a HAPPIE NEWW YEAH, too. The next article'll be up either on Monday or Tuesday. It's got nothing to do with any holiday. Thank God.

Thanks for all your hard work, Matt. The calendar was a blast to read at work when I wasn't supposed to be surfing the Web.

That's a pretty decent haul there, especially if some of it doubles as article material. I'm going to have to start looking in pharmacies for 14 year old Turtles stuff now.
If you're looking for a great movie to review (great as in it's terrible and would make a great review), check out R.O.T.O.R. They play it one of the Cinemax channels at least once a month, if you've got digital cable. If you can't manage to find it on the TV, I wouldn't mind making a VHS copy. I really need to make one for myself anyway, before my DVR's drive explodes and I lose it.
Here are a few ROTOR links:

Even if you don't review it, I really recommend that you see this movie at all costs. ALL costs.

Happy new year to you, too, Matt. Great job on the calender, it was a blast! Nice haul with those presents, too. Mine weren't quite as memorable, but they were still nice. As for experimental articles... I say bring em' on! I'm always ready to try something new.

I love the TMNT Mega Blok set! I have a huge Mega Blok dragons set I have no room to set up so I just tore out the dragons themselves and set them about the place.
It's f***ed up that now when I can afford all the toys I always wanted, I have no place to put them. Well, I can't afford them ALL but still...
Happy New Year to all and special happies to Matt for making this a New Year to look forward to. And Happy to kingklash for reminding me why I can't ever get competely sane and to Heeloyd for thinking like me so that I am not insane alone :) And to everyone else for reading this site so that Matt has to keep doing it :)

So your siblings have spawned a brood that makes your family birthrate rival a Third World country...at least you don't have your mom demanding "when are you going to settle down with a nice girl and give me some grandchildren?"
(the answer to that question, BTW, is "when the birth control method fails", but you can't tell your mom that.)

Hell Comes to Frogtown: "Rowdy" Roddy Piper (the wrestler) is the last fertile man on a post-apocalyptic world and needs to infiltrate a city of mutant frogs to impregnate women and he wears a special protector cod piece
Pocket Ninjas: a terrible 3 Ninjas knock-off, where the plot literally makes NO sense and the fighting is atrocious
Basket Case 3: I know you did the first one, but I've seen the other 2. The second one is a dissapointment, but the third one is pure gold. Belial gets an erector set robot to kill people.

X-mas with my family really sucked! My family is super-conservative, so there's never any alcohol or anything good (except for my alcoholic uncle, who went to his car every two minutes to take a shot).
I got hella money though, and I'm thinkn' about gettin' that 12" Snake Eyes and Sorm Shadow and a tobacco pipe (I used to smoke cigarettes, but have now decided to resort to something better for you. But no offense to all of those who do smoke ciggies. I don't blame you.)
New Year's is probably gonna be lame too. I hate being home for the holidays because all of my friends who do anything fun (e.g. smoking and drinking) are away at their homes not to be seen by me until I return to school. And my parents are as boring as Hell. I can't wait to go back to school.

Nate, don't count New Year's out just yet, a Twilight Zone marathon will be shown on Sci-Fi. You know, if you're into that and whatnot. Is there anybody out there who actually doesn't like The Twilight Zone though?
Who remembers the episode with the charity toys in the gigantic box? God, I love that.
Chestnuts roasted by Matt (#2?) @ 12/28/2003 04:30 PM EST
#2 I remember that episode well. It's one of few that have stuck in my mind since the very first time I saw them. Others are the one with the lady at the department store (not going to spoil that for anyone who hasn't seen it), the "ugly woman" one, the one with the guy who survives the nuclear war but breaks his glasses, and the one with the devil radios at the diner. As I finished that short list, several others came to mind- the one with the boy who is a "very good boy" (Simpsons spoofed that one), the one where the Earth is getting closer to the sun (another one with a surprise), and everyone's favorite-Captain Kirk on the plane.
I guess I am going to have to watch the damn thing :)

I'm afraid I've gotten no toys...yet. I'm going up north to the closest actual mall to Wildwood with my mom and brother on Tuesday to spend the Christmas money Grandma and the little old lady who lives next door to my folks gave me and the gift certificate to Sears, so we'll see what I come back with.
I got some nice stuff, but not quite like Matt's - a not-exciting historic novel from one sister, a cute American Girls tin with recipies from my aunt, the soundtrack to the movie version of "The Lion King" on CD from my little brother (my cassette copy finally wore out last summer) new gloves (lost my old ones on the bus last winter) from the other sister, the Fiestaware I mentioned in the last entry, new ornaments for my tree (a really pretty glass heart and a big snowflake that looks like it's made of icing), two calenders (Star Wars and old James Bond posters), new pans and potholders, beaded bracelets and necklaces made by a good friend at work, and a cute Christmas bear (I named him Tiny Tim ; 0 ) from my friend's mother.
Christmas itself was quite a bit of fun. After my family opened presents, Dad made his big, artery-blocking breakfast of real home fries, waffles, scrambled eggs, toast, sausage, bacon, scrapple, chipped beef, and orange juice. One of my sisters couldn't stick around (she had to work Christmas night), but the other and her boyfriend joined the rest of the family for dinner at once of the nicest restaurants in Cape May (and one of the only ones open at Christmas, or in the winter at all), The Pelican Club. It's a great place on the top floor of one of the hotels, with a heavenly menu. I had seafood spring rolls with ginger hoisin sauce, mussels in marinara sauce with gorganzola cheese and linguini, and banana-spiced pecan bread pudding with caramel sauce. I'm getting stuffed again just thinking about it. I got to go home with my parents, who drove around some of the rich neighborhoods in West Cape May and North Cape May and looked at the fantastic light displays.

The green care bear with the clover in the middle is Good Luck Bear. Bedtime Bear is kind of light bluish and has a sleeping moon (I think) on his gut. I used to have both in ultra plastic action bear forms. I used to adore the Care Bears. Yes, I'll admit it, I used to love the damn things.

Matt,
If you are going to review a movie, you have to find a copy of "Cloak and Dagger". Trust me, this 1984 movie is right up your alley. It stars Henry Thomas as the main character and Dabney Coleman in dual, yes dual, roles as Henry's dad and Captain Jack Black. And the whole plot revolves around the atari 2600. You must check this movie out....

I'm sure that Shallow Hal sucks, but Saving Silverman (also with Jack Black) is a huge steaming pile, and I avoid any movie with any of the S.S. "actors." What's worst about the thing is that I willingly, blithely agreed to pay $12.00 to see it because none of us could agree on any other movie.

looks like a nice friggin' christmas haul, matt. i have a gizmo like yours, if you stand him up on his feet and lean him back, he'll actually stand! it's a trick action figures have been pulling off for years, but ya rarely see a plush that can stand on two feet. the r2 looks awesome, reminds me of this roby jr. robot i had. i got the usual "cheesy wallet and pocketknife i'll never useŽ" from my g-rents, but at least i got a shirt with a goomba. happy late new years everyone!
