04/09/2004 Entry: "I got drunk with Optimus Prime."

Boy, last night was absolutely surreal. Brian and I attended the official launch party for that new Transformers Playstation game (also celebrating Transformers' 20th anniversary), marking the second party I've been to for this one particular video game. Held in midtown Manhattan in what looked to be either a really big photo studio or a modestly sized reception hall, it was a room full of Transformers nuts, plasma screens and loads of alcohol.

I had a chance to interview David Kaye, who's been voicing Megatron for nearly a decade now. Garry Chalk (Optimus) was there, but since I already did an interview with him, he was instead used for a very entertaining cigarette break buddy. Let me tell you, that guy is absolutely aces. Super nice and shitloads of fun. Anyone who'll smoke seventeen cigs in the rain, waxing philosophical about "Bride of Chucky" while doing Family Guy impressions is worth saying hello to. As for David, I'm not going to say too many nice things about him. I don't think it's fair that the dude who voices Megatron was the best looking guy at the party. Doesn't he have enough?

All in all, it was just an absolute blast. Of the soirees and galas of this type that I've been fortunate enough to attend, this was probably my favorite of all. On the other hand, I'm having trouble remembering most of it. Vague recollections were sprinkled through the morning hours, but by this afternoon, I was pretty sure that a good time was had. Full coverage on the event, along with the Prime and Megatron interviews plus four different Transformers DVD reviews will be up on UGO sometime next week. I'm going to have to negotiate my time on Easter Sunday between family and that episode of "Beast Wars" where poor Dinobot gets offed. Should be interesting.

Don't ask me how, but I ended up coming home with the drink menu:

Yeah, drinks named after Mini-Cons. My kind of party. Attendees also received gift bags, and since I need to archive a memory that's slowly fading, click "more" to see the freebies...

Goodies! Goodies for me!

Toonami watch. Because of the tins, everyone assumed these were just candles. We were such fools.

True story: I had gotten a different figure, but the package was all bent up so I traded it in for this one. The woman working the giftbag desk (amazing that they had a giftbag desk, but don't get too excited, it doubled as a coatcheck) happily exchanged my bent up toy for this one. Old habits die hard, but alas, I mashed it up to bits on the bus ride home.

Toonami T-shirt. One size fits most.

Dropbox stuff, because the theme of any Transformers party should be LOTS OF YELLING AND SCREAMING.

Toonami shoulderbag, which is pretty neat, actually. Very silky. You could make babies on it.

Demo for the game, in high-tech packaging.

Comics!

Stickers! I think I took more than I was supposed to. I always do when nobody's looking.

Art asset CD full of screenshots from the game and whatnot. I had Prime and Megsy sign it, because I was drunk and someone had a Sharpie.

erm.. I just had to comment cause it appears Im first! though probably not by the time I post this.. did you steal that menu Matt or did they let you have it?

Chestnuts roasted by Toxicity- @ 04/09/2004 07:35 PM EST

I'd have to consider the drink menu stolen goods, but if Atari could see how happy I am to have it, I don't think they'd take issue.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 04/09/2004 07:36 PM EST

Sounds like a great time, getting drunk with Optimus Prime and all. "Because I was drunk and someone had a Sharpie." That's classic. Ha.

Chestnuts roasted by Goonie4Life @ 04/09/2004 07:39 PM EST

I laughed my ass off at the drink menu. I will forever name my alcoholic bevarges by their new Minicon names.

Sounds like you were in geek heaven to me, Matt. Damn, I'm jealous!!!

Cure my envy with a review of "Mac and Me".

Damn, the freebies look like they cost more than the game will two times over. I love it!

Stickers! I also love stickers!

AND JELL-O! I LOVE JELL-O!

Somebody (probably a lot of somebodies) at that party was a vodka lover. I'm never going to look at vodka and orange juice in the same way again.

Envy...

You have the greatest job on the fucking planet. I really wish I had something clever or witty to add on the topic, but I'm just thunderstruck. You lucky bastard.

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 04/09/2004 10:12 PM EST

You know what would be awesome? If we actually had an XE convention and it coincided with something like this. Then we could try to crash it,(I say try because we probably wouldn't make it past the door) or Matt could pretend that we're his entourage.

"You have the greatest job on the fucking planet. I really wish I had something clever or witty to add on the topic, but I'm just thunderstruck. You lucky bastard."

My exact thought process while reading that entry. I got really excited when you mentioned that Transformers drink menu, too. And the fact that there was an actual party celebrating Transformers makes me question if this party ever existed! Look at those people in the first photo. They're there for Megatron? They're there for Transformers?!

Chestnuts roasted by Bobby... @ 04/09/2004 10:22 PM EST

Being merely a combination of two different spirits, I'd say the new name of "Knockdown" was aptly chosen. That's hilarious, though. I am telling all my geeky friends about this, and they will laugh. Oh yesh.

An X-E convetion? That would be tres cool!

Chestnuts roasted by Freezair @ 04/09/2004 10:58 PM EST

As a big fan of animation and a follower of voice actors, I'm pretty envious of you being able to meet those Transformers guys. I'd love to meet them; I loved Gary Chalk in Reboot and David Kaye as Clank in Ratchet and Clank(ever play that?).

Chestnuts roasted by Behonkkiss @ 04/09/2004 11:14 PM EST

Awesome!

Chestnuts roasted by Rachel Cakes @ 04/09/2004 11:23 PM EST

Speaking of the Beast Wars episode where poor Dinobot gets offed, have you been picking up the Beast Wars DVDs, Matt? I know the 2nd season was released a week or so ago, and the 3rd is supposed to be out later this year. Beast Wars is by far the best Transformers series.

Chestnuts roasted by Rood @ 04/10/2004 12:02 AM EST

I like the "Excellent!" along with David Kaye's autograph. I'd be insanely proud of voicing a guy like Megatron for so long. Especially ol' Megs from Beast Wars. Loved those roller skates.

Chestnuts roasted by ChaosMonkey @ 04/10/2004 12:11 AM EST

Still wished they used the old Transformers font though... this new one they've been using has gotta go.

Chestnuts roasted by delafro @ 04/10/2004 01:34 AM EST

Wow. So...much...Transformers. And video games. Transformers + video games = I die happy. Matt + TF Convention = I become jealous. I have nothing else to say. I mean...heaven. Pure heaven. Geek Nirvana. Okay, NOW I'm done.

Chestnuts roasted by Armagideon Time @ 04/10/2004 01:38 AM EST

While Matt was too drunk to notice, I, while drunk, asked a drunken PR person if it was ok to take the drink menu. She hesitated before giving the thumb's up. So we both got one.

Chestnuts roasted by Brian @ 04/10/2004 02:05 AM EST

Looks like it was a fun party!! I always take loads of stickers at conventions and stuff, I mean they are free right? HAHA!

O yeah as I was flipping channels tonight I saw something odd and somewhat disturbing on the "animal planet" channel. DAVE COULIER!! HOSTING A SHOW!! I think it was called "Animal Kidding" or something like that. It was like a candid camera/cosby's "kids say darndest things" mix, but it was kids playing with animals or something. I saw kids chasing chickens as dave narrarated and then it cut back to them in the studio for the end of the show. When I saw him sitting there my jaw dropped and I was like WTF!! Just thought I would share... :P

I wish they sold some of that Toonami swag. My old Toonami watch's strap died, and I've never bothered to replace it (ah, I got free myself, so I've got no issue with it.) A sleek new Toonami watch might be cool though.

Good stuff Matt!

Chestnuts roasted by CripNite @ 04/10/2004 07:38 AM EST

Just wondering... why does Matt comment about how Megatron is the "best looking guy at the party?"

Chestnuts roasted by Kaynyne @ 04/10/2004 07:50 AM EST

delafro - Well, Hasbro still uses the original logo for their G1 comics and reissue toys. However, all the current TF product (be it Robots in Disguise, Armada, Universe or Energon) use the new unified logo.

Chestnuts roasted by Fit For Natalie @ 04/10/2004 08:20 AM EST

Matt, a note on the "Atari" stickers:
you could not have taken enough.

Atari makes those stickers like prostitutes give blowjobs. I work at Blockbuster/GameRush, I should know. We get WAY too many of those stickers. At first, we were gviing them out to customers, but the damn things were still piling up, so we had to throw them away. Whenever we see those stickers, something in all of us dies.

On the bright side, I could probably redecorate my room with nothing but those stickers.

What's the matter? Couldn't they think of a drink for Dead End?
He's the only Minicon I have (let alone ever seen besides pics)

Aside:
My Optimus Prime article is done.. between him and Unicron I think I have the best Transformers ever made!
(until we get Altenators at my local Walmart)

Wow, sounds like a wicked time. Sigh, the only experience I've had similar is when I met George Foremen. All I could says was that I really liked his grill.

On a hilarious side note: It was mothers day and my bro and I pitched in and bought a talking frame from Radio Shack. The only picture that we could find small enough where it was just our faces was the one with George. So we made a copy and cut it up. So there is me and my bro and on my shoulder is a big black hand. Ha!!! Still makes me laugh. Love ya Ma!!!!

Lucky you, Matt. It's fortunate that you live in New York where cool stuff like this happens, and you just happen to have the right kind of site to get in the door.

As for me, I spend my schoolyear in the shitty town of Langley, BC Canada. And I spend my summers in the shithole city of Sacramento (no offense to Robert Berry intended). Nothing happens in either place, which is why my life is boring.

I am really excited about the TF game. There are a few good ones coming out this year for PS2, but I think this one takes the cake.
