"Bionic Six" is one of my favorite cartoons, so it was pretty cool seeing a shot of a toy commercial. I barely found the toys in stores and never saw that "Saga Continues" ad.

Matt, have you ever done an article on the WildLife Treasury Cards? My memory is a little hazy, but if you haven't I'd love to see something on here about them. "A duckbilled platypus has feet like a duck, but it's furry. They're all in my WildLife Treasury!"

Aaah, Capsela. Fond memories there. What other toy would let you create bizarre combinations of useless fans, small light bulbs and electric motors that could barely power anything? It was definitely a wonderfully creative toy though - I recall hours of setting up eleborate contraptions, and troubleshooting them when they didn't work perfectly.

Finally! Thank you Matt for posting a picture of T.H.I.N.G.S. on here. Those were the most sought after toys in my 4th grade class. I had about 6 of them but I stupidly let one of my friends borrow all but one. Then he moved to Florida and took my T.H.I.N.G.S. with him. Ever since then I've been trying to remember what those toys were called. The "Lance-A-Lot-O-Rings" one was the best.

Bionic Six was one of the few "action" cartoons I liked. Right up there w/ Dinosaucers (another show in need of X-E treatment).
As for Fat Albert, I used to like it when I was a kid but when the Animaniacs were being "leased" out in one cartoon I enjoyed how they made fun of it.

Chestnuts roasted by Lumberjack Matt @ 04/15/2004 03:25 AM EST
I love Fat Albert for being funny and still dealing with issues that can not even be brought up on kid's television today. I am sure Matt could have fun with the more extreme episodes: http://www.filmationarchives.com/sinister.htm
Unfortunately, the changes they have made with the director and star for the live-action movie took me from slightly optimistic to worried. Kenan Thompson (Saturday Night Live and Kenan & Kel) will star as Fat Albert http://filmforce.ign.com/moremovies/objects/34842.html
It is a shame because when Forest Whitaker was set to direct he had found the perfect Fat Albert: Omar Benson Miller

Here's some trivia: Dinosaucers never got any toys. Isn't that a ripoff?

Chestnuts roasted by Rowan Steele @ 04/15/2004 09:08 AM EST
Hey, Matt, I just came across a complete (if a bit markered up) Who Framed Roger Rabbit? coloring book. There are coloring pages, plus "exciting activities". Interested?
"D" stands for drippy. All of that fresh lettuce and tomato really made a heck of a mess when plopped onto a greasy burger.
Oh, and does anyone know how to get the smell of cat pee off of things? Our cat has some kind of incontience issues, and relieved herself in my kids' playroom. It reeks. I tried rug shampooing, Febreeze and bleach and water. Is this one of those things you use tomato juice for? Like skunk spray?

I just had a huge wall in my brain breakdown. I totally remember these things now that I saw the pictures. I had a bunch of the vehicles and jets. They were 1/2 GI Joe 1/2 transformers. Kind of like the MASK toys but way cooler cuz they were for space.
Thanks Seth for brining out memories that all those shots of Jagermeister had blurred up and blocked off.

I'm pretty sure #9 is Cricket- my first best friend had one. She made me watch some Cricket tape once, too. It was pretty awful.
Chestnuts roasted by Rainbowfeet @ 04/15/2004 05:42 PM EST
Was Cricket the doll with the commercials that went:
"Let's be friends,
We'll do things together.
We'll have a great old time!"
I remember that when I was about 12, I'd replace the words "Let's be friends" with "Lesbie friends" and "great old time" with "gay old time", for a juvenile chuckle.
Also, I remember the Jill commercial song:
My name is Jill,
And I'm a lot like you.
A lot like you.
I can move my heads and arms
A lot like you.
A lot like you."
Wish I could get those songs out of my head. :(
Also, the "D" in McDLT stands for... wait for it... "Donald's". It's McDonald's Lettuce and Tomato. I never tried the McDLT, though I would not be at all surprised if the McXtra burger they have currently is more or less identical to the McDLT, only without the "hot side hot, cool side cool" packaging gimmick, which was a huge waste of styrofoam.
In regards to Fat Albert, I have a worthless theory I'm trying to peddle; that Super GALS!, about the current best domestically-available Japanese anime most people have never heard of since it gets near zero hype, even on anime fan sites, is essentially like a Japanese version of Fat Albert, since both cartoons are about a gang, but a friendly one, in the city, going around solving problems, often criminal (like in the first episode, they stop a high school girl from becoming an underage prostitute). Just Super GALS! has more kicking and less musical instruments made from junk. Not that many people would be interested, but you can read a long review I did of the first volume of Super GALS! a couple of months back in my RottenTomatoes.com journal.

Quite a few posts back, I expressed some concern about our avian avatar. Her site had a statement to the effect that she may have overstepped some boundry and decided to withdraw into the faceless throng. I'm old-school Woody Allen neurotic enough to wonder if I had anything to do with it. Even winged an e-mail her way, and it was bounced back. So, if I did or said anything, Duck, I am repentant. If it was anyone else, I will dedicate all free time to discover a way to wedgie people over the internet. Duck, come back, Duck! I've got knives! Nice sharp, pointy knives!

Shriners are indeed those guys who wear fezzes. They are a bizarre bunch from what I have seen, although they seem to support a fair amount of charitable organizations.
Once a year where I live (Burlington, VT), a whole bunch of these guys put on a sort of parade. It has a bunch of the standard parade things - like a marching band, and people carrying banners. The weird part is that a bunch of them drive around in these little mini cars and trucks. Its like some Twilight Zone Munchkinland or something, seeing a whole bunch of old guys in fezzes driving miniature vehicles around in circles. They even have a little truck with a ramp in the front and back, and they drive in figure 8's, taking turns going up and over the ramped truck. Very very strange. My friend calls it "The Shrining".

Crap, meant to add this to the above: Matt, if I can get an encode of another toy commercial from the early 90's, would you be interested? And if so, what's the best way to go about getting it to you?

Shriners are odd, but not near as strange as the history of the Illuminati or the Free Masons. Coincidentlty, the Illuminati were founded exactly 200 years before the day I was born.
And sadly, the Masons seem to value money more than anything...but if you want to get ahead at your job, get sponsered and join the Masons. You'll find yourself getting promoted faster than you can say "secret society."

Good save, Matt! I figured it was those damned space monkeys again. Hasselhoff controls them, you know. Guess I'll have to set up my portable Duck temple in advance of her visit.

I'm disappointed that the color-changing G.I. Joe ended up being the Shadow Ninjas. I was hoping it would be about the original color-changer: Zartan. I'm saddened beyond words.

Hey Matt, did you ever find that Gremlins anti-drinking PSA you were looking for awhile back? I vaaaaguely remember that one. Also, do you have the McDonald's Mac Tonight commercial? Both would make killer downloads.
BTW, thanks for reviving all these 80s tv commercials on your site. Anyone can have access to 80s movies, tv shows, and music, but the commercials are VERY tough to come by. Thanks so much for making them available!

Capsela.. wow.. that brings back memories.. Never got a chance to own a kit, but instead I wound up with a distant cousin of it though
Robotix. That was nift! The thing I have to give major props on Capsela and Robotix (and Construx) was that they were like lego's on steriods! lol
Chestnuts roasted by Crysstaafur @ 04/20/2004 12:44 AM EST
Did you just say construx? I LOVED THOSE THINGS! So much fun they were!! My friend had a capsela but i just didnt catch on to them. I was a lego child!(and still am) >:D
Construx were awesome though, I remember building massive towers and stuff with them for the ninja turtles and gijoes to use as bases. great times were had and fun ensued.

I missed my blog :(
Tonight I will be sitting my ass down in front of the TV with a nice rum and coke. After watching John Stevens totally fuck up on AI, I will throw in my brand new JEM DVD and have multiple orgasms. It comes out today, and you had better believe I will pick up that bitch!!! :)

There's a new article up, but the bloggie won't be up till tomorrow. The guy that's fixing everything (the only one I'd trust with this) isn't gonna be around till the morning. Big post'll be up on here the second it's fixed.

I'm not a mother, nor do I ever dream to be one...too much damn responsibility. So, the problem arises when your lil' brats come to you wanting the blue french fries that Mrs. so and so has down the street. Any mother who willingly buys her children BLUE french fries is seriously fucked in the head, and most likely suffers from some sort of drug/alcohol addiction. That just ain't propper.

"DVDs are popping up all over, so I shouldn’t have been surprised on a recent visit to the supermarket to find them in the groceries. Boxes of Total® Raisin Bran and Oatmeal Crisp have been issued containing four different sitcom DVDs from Sony. The discs come with either two episodes of BARNEY MILLER or THE DONNA REED SHOW, or you can choose discs with one episode each of KING OF QUEENS or MAD ABOUT YOU with bonus footage. The episodes I’ve seen look better than broadcast, but are a bit choppy around commercial breaks. The cereal is tasty and provides 100% of your daily requirements of 11 vitamins and minerals. The best news is that the DVDs stay crunchy, even in milk."

Those "Funky" Fries have the voice of Taft from "The Tick," complete with back-up singers. At least, that's how it sounds in my head. As for the indigestible food coloring, remember this Stephen King quote: "Nothing wrong here!"

"In the movie, the characters of Bill Cosby's famous cartoon series find themselves in human form when they tumble out of their television show and end up in the real world. As Fat Albert tries to help young Doris win some friends, he falls in love with her sister Lauri—and everyone gets nervous that not only will his famous problemsolving talent fail him, but that he'll want to stay in the real world."

My high school had those smiley fries(class 2002). They turned out soggy and it was like fried mashed potatoes. I hated that day becasue they had this super salty salisbury steak sandwich thing. Those smiley fries also gave me heartburn.

Re Fat Albert - well, the pics look physically right, but that plot synopsis frightens me to no end.

What? No motorcycle chase in "Fat Albert?" Will this be a bigger blasphemosity than "I, Robot?" Is William Hung? At what age did Victor Mature? Is KingKlash ever going to get a Green Lantern symbol tattoed on his ring finger? And what of Cassandra Sakura Dmitri Heiselburg St. Bernard's plan to market press-on jeans? The saga continues......

Does anybody know the context of those people dancing in that McDLT picture? I really want to know. I gave up McDonalds after they didn't have the Shamrock shakes on St. Patricks Day. I'd probably go back for a McDLT. I like the hot part hot and the cool part cool. Now please answer my question.

Nevermind, Matt. I found ALL the Mac Tonight ads. (the end all, be all of 80s TV commercials) All the 30 second spots, plus some shorter promos he did for Mac Tonight premiums you could get at McDonald's. These commercials are from 1988.
BTW, I remember that pic from up above with the people dancing for the McDLT. Cool ad, I'd like to see it available for downlaod in the future. Thanks for filling our 80s commercial void, Matt C.

Mac Tonight was cool, like a cross between Max Headroom and the (supposed) satanic Proctor and Gamble logo. And he wore his sunglasses at night! His sunglasses at night! So he could, so he could.....

I remember the Mac Tonight spots... I think I even saw a cup from one at one of those old stores that sells all sorts of junk some years back... hey Matt, if I come across something like that again, should I send it your way?
And I'd love to see the ads again... where'd you find them, Death by Stereo?

Strange to think that a song about a thief, murderer, rapist, and arsonist eventually ended up a jazz standard and then a commercial shilling hamburgers...
