Matt, that image reminds me of how I think The Matrix owes some cards/flowers to Tron, Dark City, and of course Japanese anime/manga for their assistance. X-E really needs to crack open Tron and see if Richard was right in it being prophetic about Bitner or not.
The title of this entry reminds of how one can click on my name for Robby Roadsteamer's idea of "The M.V.P. of Failure." Not for those easily nauseous at the site of supposed improv.

Matt, I have an idea for an article! Try and get some of those new He-man figures (yep, theyre still making and selling new ones, but only in Europe and on the internet ) together from the He-Store (THe Snake Men are the most recent)and review them. THis would be good to show how MOTU is allive and thriving (at least in Europe)

Thank you, Matt. Another fond memory found.

When will arcades be cool again?
Chestnuts roasted by Nachokhaki @ 06/15/2004 10:42 AM EST
Arcades will be cool again when they stop focusing on making cookie cutter machines, like all those gun games, and DDR ripoffs, and racing games, and focus on making games that are actually unique from the consoles.
It would also help if they didn't leave pinball machines to rot, before replacing them with another friggin ticket game!!!

Does anyone know where I can get my hands on a copy of these toons?

Woo-hoo! I watched the crap out of these shows back then. Supercade and Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, Pole Position, and of course Pac-Man. If they weren't great, at least it wasn't Turbo Teen! Gah! Now I have to wash that memory out of my brain by going to FARK. Back in a bit.
Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 06/15/2004 12:21 PM EST
I like arcades once in a while, even if at 32 I'm the oldest woman there that isn't a parent. I agree with Number5's opinion. I would also request better ambient lighting surrounding the games, and shelves or hooks next to the games for coats, backpacks, and the like. It would make the gaming experience easier for everyone. Thank you.

Damn! I didn't know that things looked like that back then! Stuff seemed pretty modern at the time....looking back on it, you have to wonder why we were all getting excited over crappy BASIC looking characters that happened to get their own TV shows.

Pitfall Harry, I have to admit, was my favorite of them all, then Q-Bert, and last bu not least Pac-Man! Matt, I can't thank you enough for proving that this did exist to a friend who is in denial about it right now. Saturday Supercade, you're the best!

How about a cartoon about Matt's fish? Or, Jim Henson's X-E Babies?
Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 06/15/2004 05:23 PM EST
kingklash, a cartoon would be great, but what about the X-E movie or show with Corey Haim as Matt? Forget Shrek, imagine the X-E product promotion that would go along with that production. Slap bracelets, wall walkers and digital pets are some of the fads Matt could resurrect for tie-ins.
Matt, are you still doing something with VH1?
Chestnuts roasted by ME @ 06/15/2004 05:52 PM EST
Probably my favorite Saturday Morning Cartoon was Kid Video. I've had dreams of being in a garage band ever since.
Chestnuts roasted by Sean @ 06/15/2004 06:48 PM EST
Wow! I am so upset that I somehow managed to miss the Saturday Supercade. Im 24 years old and grew up with a working TV, so there was no way that a show like that should have slipped by me. I seem to recall a friend of mine telling me about a Donkey Kong cartoon back when we were kids, but I think it held a really crappy time slot, like 5 am or something.

ME: ME: VH-1 thing fell through. It wasn't for any show that I think they're currently airing, so they may have scrapped it entirely. No idea. They were cool about it, and I stayed in touch with one of the people there for a long while afterwards. (she was intrigued by the Bitner search) They told me gears were switched and they were only getting celebs to do panel appearances instead of just "experts" or whatever. Made enough sense to me not to be too disappointed.

Sean, although I reluctantly agree that Kidd Video was good, I'd have to say, in live action 80s TV, nothing beats Degrassi Junior High!
~And the home of the Brave!
Chestnuts roasted by Mugzy. . . @ 06/15/2004 10:07 PM EST
That is too bad, Matt. Have you been approached by anyone else? If not, then you should look into doing something on you own for direct release and profit through the site.
Speaking of Kidd Video, that would be a great way to handle X-E for a television series. There is always the Video Power way to go (See my name for previous annoying VP suggestion by ME), or even a mix of the two. You know Corey Haim would be down for playing the "real" Matt!
This is all of course if you have not already mapped out how to translate the site into another entertainment medium.

I just wanted to remind myself of a cartoon called "Galaxy High". CBS was cool!

Chestnuts roasted by manwithpez @ 06/16/2004 02:34 AM EST
Hey, Inspector Gadget was cool and all, but Danger Mouse could kick his ass any day, and even if Penfold was double teamed by Penny and Brain, he could probably still womp them. But that's just my opinion.
Chestnuts roasted by Stilewalker @ 06/16/2004 09:37 AM EST
This brings me back, Donkey Kong kinda was annoying, not as annoying as the cgi on that now was on a few years back. The other day I came across some old Mask Crusader toys, anyone remember that show? I cant get the theme song out of my head now, hey Matt, how about a review of them?
Chestnuts roasted by Naveed @ 06/16/2004 10:54 AM EST
VH1 was intrigued by the Bitner search, sweet...That means we need to get Amir Haleem(sp?) on the case, if he can reunite Flock of Seagulls, he can make anything happen...
By the way, they don't need Matt on "I Love the 80's"? The show is now a mere shell of its former self in my eyes...They could've also used Matt in "The Best Week Ever", because I know the best thing to happen to me this week, I met Gloria, the worlds smallest(and saddest)woman. PS--Now that I'm thinking about it, they say a normal woman having a baby is like pushing a bowling ball out, I wonder how Gloria felt during labor...I digress, looking for some easy mac now...

I remember there was this one episode where the planet ran out of water. There was a scene of this creature chasing a drip of water. It had a coll song playing during it.
I also really dug the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon.

I have looked for ages for some site or p2p program that had episodes of Saturday Supercade, and have been disappointed.
It almost amuses me how I recorded quite a few Saturday morning cartoons back then, but I never ever seemed to have recorded a single Saturday Supercade.

Did I just see a reference to Kidd Video! Holy Sheeeeit! I loved that show. I've had songs from that show stuck in my head for years. Like that TLC song. Plus, they did a cover of Ride the White Pony on that show, and no one will believe that I saw what I saw. The song was used in reference to a trojan horse. Come to think of it, that was a strange show. Then again, I used to enjoy Teen Wolf, so...whatever.

Matt -
Have you ever played a coin-op game called "Chiller"? I downloaded it for Mame32. It's a shooting gallery type game where you shoot people in torture chambers and graveyards. It's the most disturbing video game I've ever seen. You should do a review on it. Hard to believe this was ever a real "arcade" type game.

Hey-
I almost posted this in the last Shrek feature, but this is more recent.
So I was eating a banana yesterday, and lo and behold, what do I see on it... "See Garfield the Movie." A Garfield banana sticker, instead of Dole or what-have-you. What, is this how they're getting people to go see the movie? I was really surprised to not see Shrek, Donkey, or Puss in Boots. Go figure. I guess Garfield had less of the market to tread on.
Just thought somebody might like to know.
Chestnuts roasted by Rainbowfeet @ 06/16/2004 09:17 PM EST
Rainbowfeet: I saw the Garfield movie, it sucked. All it deserves is bananas, I havent seen Shreck yet, but I really dont wanna either so I can only assume its good enough to deserve its face on every product in the world.
Matt: Have you seen Garfield yet? Assuming you like(d) Garfield, you know the worse part? Not once does Garfield threaten to send Nermal to Abudabi. Not once!

Eh, I thought Garfield was a cute enough kids' movie as long as you ignore the gangsta Nermal, the non-bitchy Liz, and the fact that Odie was originally Lyman's dog (okay, all animated versions of Garfield ignored the existence of Lyman too). And that the movie took place in an unnamed midwestern city way too big to be Muncie, Indiana. (Though this film does break the modern rule... usually, when a city isn't named, it's filmed in Toronto, but this was actually filmed in Los Angeles.) I was just pleased that they took into account the "Peter Venkman" factor when they were casting the voices, and made Bill Murray the voice of Garfield, since Bill Murray played Dr. Peter Venkman in two live-action Ghostbusters films, and, in the first two seasons of The Real Ghostbusters, the voice of Peter Venkman was provided by the late Lorenzo Music, who was best known, to people my age, at least, as the voice of Garfield, but, since Lorenzo Music died in August 2001, it was a fitting tribute to have Bill Murray do the voice of his most famous character, since Music filled in for Murray as Venkman.
Speaking of Abu-Dhabi, I wish they'd release a Garfield & Friends song CD, since the "Abu-Dhabi" song was about Lorenzo Music's best musical performance after "Scaredy Cat" in the Hallowe'en special.

Oh how I miss Lyman. Not due to him, but I thought the strips were actually pretty good back then. (I have collective editions..wasn't reading comics at that point because I was just a sperm) Between those strips, the holiday shows, the Saturday toon and all of the books bought from the Troll Book Club, it's hard to write off *everything* about Garfield as being a sucky, lucky success.
Don't think I'll see the movie till one of my siblings makes me babysit someone, though.
Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 06/16/2004 10:53 PM EST
Garfield has been and always will be the #1 fat-cat cartoon character in my eyes - screw Heathcliff! Basically, the first thing I remember knowing how to draw - and still can to a "T" is Garfield! His love for sleeping and lasagna always made my fat, lazy, Italian ass at ease.

I know all the words. My family sung that song for a long time.
Abu Dhabi, it's far away!
Abu Dhabi, that's where you'll stay!
Abu Dhabi, the place to be
For any kitten that's annoying me, la la la
Now some take a train,
And some take a plane,
But I am sending you
Not on a boat,
Or even afloat
But in a box marked Postage Due!
Abu Dhabi, now you're all packed
Abu Dhabi, now don't come back
Abu Dhabi, the perfect commute
for any kitten that is TOO DARN CUTE!!!
Chestnuts roasted by Mars @ 06/17/2004 02:29 AM EST
Yeah, I have NO interest in seeing the Garfield movie at all... the main reason is because I just don't get how they can have a CG Garfield and a real Odie. Seriously...
I'd probably gripe more if I saw it, but I really don't feel like wasting my time. Plus, all I have to go on is Garfield and Friends (which I really liked, by the way).
Chestnuts roasted by Rainbowfeet @ 06/17/2004 08:10 PM EST
I can't believe you skipped my cartoon. If I didn't teach people to keep trying no matter how bad things got (and by bad i mean the same jungle traps again and again for 20 minutes in search of treasure) then what good was I? Be a pal and give the poor readers who DON'T remember my early toon appearance a chance to re-live it.

Matt-VH1 only wants celebrities? Who says you're not celebrity?
Anyway, I love this pic, and I loved that video download from which this pic was taken. Gone are the days of such good cartoons. Nowadays, the only country that makes cartoons that are even remotely good is Japan, and even then there's crap like Pokemon. (Sorry Matt. I know how much you love Pokemon, but I just can't stand that shit.)

Concerning Q-Bert, here is a bit from the news files of Videoland MUSH:
What can you say?
@#$%!
This childish, self-censoring version of cursing is not only IC at Videoland, it is accepted for any situation where you would be using ventilation language, naughty or not. It helps curb the use of harsher language, and it's just plain funny.
Keep this in mind: Q-Bert has the foulest mouth of ANY character on Videoland.
Worse than Duke Nukem.
Worse than Conker.
Worse than anything /ever/ produced by Rockstar Games.
You have been warned.

I wonder if any over-ambitious grad student from Smith or Wellesley or something has ever written a treatise concerning the possible homosexual nature of Jon and Lyman's relationship...?
If not, they should. Liz is just a front.
And Garfield and Friends was a brilliant, brilliant program and is well past due for DVD release.

Hey I was just wondereing if anyone new some place I could download or listen to that Abu Dhabi song. Garfield is one of my favorite childhood memories even though I'll never want see the movie. Garfield just looks too active. For the fattest, laziest cat ever to live, he seemed to do a lot of running around in the commercials.
