06/30/2004 Entry: "Six Flags: Mr. Six!"

He's a pop culture icon in the making, and we don't know a dang thing about him.

"Mr. Six," the dancing star of Six Flags' new nationwide ad campaign, has lit the country on fire with his unique blend of hip hop moves and pattern baldness. Certainly one of the stranger campaigns to debut in the past decade, the commercial spots feature Mr. Six -- a lanky, "elderly" bald guy in a tuxedo -- rallying everyone he encounters with that infectious, insane little dance of his. There's no explaining the character's popularity, but Six Flags' theme parks are sure to benefit from the association. I mean, when you see an old guy going into spasms, YOU THINK ROLLERCOASTERS.

Commercials seem capable of defining any era. When we reflect on decades past, there's always a few ad spots that perfectly exemplify a particular time's trends and social climate. It's tough to imagine Mr. Six as the cultural icon of this decade, but then, how can one deny it? With several commercials under his belt and an alarming amount of interviews with highly respected broadcast journalists (even though he doesn't speak), Mr. Six's star is only beginning to shine. It's only a matter of time before the old bastards turns up on bedroom posters and mac & cheese boxes.

Of course, part of our intrigue lies in the fact that Mr. Six himself is, thus far, a complete enigma. Conventional wisdom suggests that he's more likely a young, energetic fellow wearing lots of makeup and a bald cap, but Six Flags isn't showing their hand. Not understanding quite who the man is or what he stands for plays a huge part in his popularity, and Six Flags would be wise to keep up the mystique.

Anyone who has seen the ad spots can attest to their odd charm. Except for the 50% who want him dead. We don't know why we love Mr. Six so much, but whenever he turns up on television, it's hard to keep out feet from tapping. Destined to go down in history as one of the advertising greats, the mysterious Mr. Six hasn't even come close to wearing out his welcome. It'll be a good five or six months before television viewers start mapping out his demise.

Yee haw Mr. Six

The commercial in which he lurks by the rides is...unsettling. I hope they put up statues by the rides in strategic places to make it more frightening.

I REALLY hate that commercial... these days as soon as I hear that grating theme, I grab the remote and change the channel as fast as possible. He looks SO creepy, and now he's showing up on buses and billboards. I hope he goes away soon.

Oh yeah...I *loved* those Quiznos subs guys! This guy...I dunno. I always kind of feel embarrased when I see the commercial. Like he's an alzheimer's patient or something. Maybe it's the VengaBoys that does it, I don't know.

Chestnuts roasted by B-Dawg @ 06/30/2004 02:08 PM EST

I think he's great. Everytime a Six Flag commercial comes on, I make sure I stop to watch it if I'm doing something else. The intrigue comes from the idea of a goofy looking little old man having so much energy and ability to do cheesy dance.

If Mr. Six isn't fully understood or appreciated in our time, he will cetainly be respected and praised for his artistic contributions by future generations.

He's the Max Fucking Headroom of the decade.

that guy scares me.

Chestnuts roasted by zombone @ 06/30/2004 02:45 PM EST

I recently went to Six Flags, and within an hour, I was ready to kill myself. For some ungodly reason, they routinely pump the song from the Mr. Six commercials ("We Like To Party" by the Vengaboys) throughout the park every ten or so minutes. At first, we were dancing along with the music, but by the fourth or fifth time, it started to kill each and every one of us inside. Eventually, it got to the point where every time the damn song started playing, you could hear a collective groan across the theme park.

Chestnuts roasted by Danny @ 06/30/2004 02:55 PM EST

You are supposed to be able to watch one of his commercials on the main Six Flags page, but it does not work.

Chestnuts roasted by ME @ 06/30/2004 03:14 PM EST

The dude scares me, yet, at the same time, I am strangely drawn to him. I don't know what it is, but I think it has to do with the fact he has an uncanny resemblance to the "granddad" in Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Recently, I went to Six Flags (New Orleans), and his ten-foot visage sent me into hysterics.

Chestnuts roasted by Nachokhaki @ 06/30/2004 03:15 PM EST

As if the TV commercials weren't bad enough, they've started doing radio ads. They start playing the song and talk about how this strange little guy is dancing. I for one am definitely in the 50% that wish the old man would have an aneurism. (Even though I'm sure it's a young guy in makeup.)

Also, is it just me or are marketing companies sticking to hugely annoying ad concepts or what? We have this guy, the stupid little zoom, zoom, zoom kid, and the worst one of them all the goddamn "I'm lovin it" campaign. Give me back the glory days of the Noid, and "Where's the beef?"

I dont think its so much Mr. Six himself that will ultimately lead to his demise, I'd blame it on Vengaboys reprise. The thing sticks in your head all day after one viewing...Maybe a song like Highway to Hell would be more appropriate for Mr. Six's groove.

I don't even know if we have Six Flags in Canada -- and since theme parks bore me, it probably doesn't matter as far as them getting my business is concerned -- but that old dude creeps me out. His commercials feel like something I should be seeing in an old '80s horror movie or something. I don't hate Mr. Six though; in a weird masochistic way, I kind of like the ad.

Chestnuts roasted by Molten @ 06/30/2004 04:39 PM EST

I recently went to Six Flags Magic Mountain here in California, and like Danny said, the song is played everywhere in the park. It might not be so bad, but it seemed it was just a loop. I understand Techno music doesn't quite follow the same intro, verse, chorus, verse, etc. of standard music, but this was just the hook, over and over. I thought my wife, an angry Puerto Rican from Queens, was gonna stab me.
I figure it's a New Yawker thing.

BTW, Matt. I am coming to Queens in hopefully a month or so to visit the wife. What are some good places to go? I plan on going to the Safari Amusement Park, but what other odd, cliche places are there?
Thanks, Brandon

That old guy in the commercial annoys me - I have to change the channel. Same goes when the stupid radio commercial comes on. It makes me want to cover my ears and scream, much like I do when ever I hear/see Celine Dion. I'll be sure to stear clear of Six Flags this summer...hopefully the song and annoying old guy will be gone next year?!

Could you throw out a few names of good neighborhoods in Brooklyn?

I'd sure appreciate it.

Count me among the 50% who want him dead. Those commercials are annoying as hell. AND I HATE that freakin song. Cultural icon he is not. He isn't even in the same league as the "Where's the beef?" lady or the dead guy who used to do the "Hey Vern" commercials whose name escapes me for some reason. No, he will be around this summer, and then gone forever, I predict, and I pray.

There is no way he'll go down as an icon because the very industry of Six Flags doesn't operate year round. He'll die off after Fright Fest. Maybe they can actually include him in it and burn him at the stake. While dancing, of course.

By the way, just saw Cabin Fever today. One of the most depressing experiences of my life. Sure, it was exciting, but did anybody else finish watching that movie and feel really upset about the nature of humanity? I mean, the guy we're supposed to route for ignores his girlfriend as she's getting eaten alive by a dog, and has sex with a girl for no reason, feeling no regrets afterward. Then, instead of humanely putting a bullet through his girlfriend's head, he beats her to death with a shovel. Man-alive . . . I had to watch Pinnochio afterwards to feel better about my life.

Mr. Six is cool. I don't see him lasting long, but I predict a cult following in his future. ^_^

I also agree, with above posters that McD's "I'm lovin' it" campeign is COMPLETELY annoying, and that the BK office girl is totally GORGEOUS! (who else got turned on by her take on the "I'm Spicy" line)

Anyway, the Quiznos hand-puppet guys are who I see as the commercial Icons of the future. "We Are Not The Huns!" LOL

Nudist Colony of the Dead. Sounds right up my alley.

'One Albert Tamzerian, known to the public as "Mr. Six", beloved mascot of the famous Six Flags amusement park chain, collapsed en route to a scheduled publicity appearance.

Witnesses describe the incident as "horrifying." A 45-year-old woman, who declined to give her name, said "At first, we thought he was trying out some new dance moves. He was rolling around on the floor and we thought he was smiling. But then he stopped moving and the security people came in and lifted him off the stage."

Tamzerian was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival. His family was known to have carried a history of heart-related diseases. Tamzerian was 73, and leaves behind two children and several grandchildren.'

How can someone not like Mr. Six? My siblings and I stop everything we're doing whenever he's on TV and just laugh our heads off at his zany dancing. He's just so lovable and funny! Kind of reminds me of Vash the Stampede as a little old man. Yes, I realize that no one understands what I just said.

By the way, I agree with Thighmaster. Mr. Six does sound like a Spike Jones kind of idea. Very surreal and irresistable.

Anyone remember the Verizon ads with James Earl Jones breakdancing? Mister Six is just a less original and more aggravating ripoff of it. The Verizon ad cut between the real Earl Jones pathetically swaying back and forth in shades and an obviously much thinner breakdancer in hideous makeup spinning around. Come on, you couldn't tell two seconds into that stupid commercial that Mister Six was a 20 year old in prosthetic makeup? They should have made him look like Richard Nixon.

i don't mind it considering the commercial for the "silver dollar city" theme park in SW missouri.

Man, the Mr. Six ads frigging ROCK! God bless the old dancing fool...Take Matt at his words, he is our generation's "Energizer Bunny" and I'm guessing he'll have his own Superbowl comercial next year. Hell, he'd have his own cartoon by now had this been the 80s. I agree with the above posters who say Spike Jonez may have something to do with this, especially when you've seen one segment from his "Jackass" show that had Johnny Knoxville dressing up as an old man. My guess: it's a twenty-something brother in makeup.

Keep dancing, old man.

OK, we've heard all kinds of theories, so I'll toss one out. I agree with HeroZero and put my money down on Jaleel White, the guy who played Steve Urkel on "Family Matters" (credits at http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0924918/). Yes, he's have to be in whiteface, but the dancing has that annoying feel to it. We've only got one Six Flags in Canada - Montreal to be exact (the old La Ronde). Yet, we get as many commercials (if not more) featuring Six as we do for Paramount Canada's Wonderland in Toronto (my home city). We are about 5 hours away from the nearest couple of Six Flags parks and yet, we are subject to that series of commercials...fortunately I kind of like them (and my daughter loves them). Usually it just prompts us to take another run up to PCW with our season's passes.

However, it is pretty funny to be saturated by commercials for parks that are at least 5 hours away from where one lives (and this is aside from satellite TV). Now that I think about it though, trying to get to PCW on a Friday in the summer could easily take one hours. The park is conveniently located on the major route out of the city into cottage country, and considering about 99% of North America's 4th largest city goes north, it can be ugly...

While going through some old videos (old x-files) I came across a Duracell commbercial with this plastic family (the Puttermans),when they got to grandma's they found her dancing much like Mr. Six.
