08/09/2004 Entry: "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Popsicles!"

It was all so sudden, I barely had time to react. Walking quickly back to work after a break, spotted was the mysterious truck. The closer I got, the clearer the form of a Ninja Turtle head became. Soon it was for certain: either the truck had TMNT ice pops, or they hadn't changed their window stickers for over a decade. Both were plausible, but only one would afford me the natural high necessary to lift a house over my head and make it sing about being a house that can fly.

We've seen the Super Mario ice pops before, but what of the Turtles? The gentleman running the truck, a bit annoyed by my picture taking but not enough to skip doing business with me, grunted a bare "yes" when asked if they had any Turtle Pops. Two dollars and a requited stare of hatred later, and thar be a cherry-flavored melting Ninja Turtles in my hand.

The wrapper marked it as part of the neoclassic TMNT line; it's not a stale throwback to the original run. But! There were TMNT ice pops nearly if not perfectly identical to these several years back. Even if you hate all the new Turtle shit, you've gotta appreciate it's power to bring back the lost pop. The eyes are gumballs, and in that we've developed the perfect way to determine if someone's really a true NInja Turtle fan:

If they refuse to eat the gumball eyes until the entire cherry ice pop is finished out of misfired loyalty toward their heroes, they're true Ninja Turtle fans.

If they eat the gum long before, then they like gum better than Ninja Turtles.

Science. Personally, standing for even two minutes in public taking pictures of a Ninja Turtle ice pop seemed far worse than being branded an untrue fan, so I offered it to the gods. Others offered them used cigarettes. I think I scored a brownie point today.

By gum! I'd forgotten 'bout them there ice-creams. Although to fit the new manga stylings of the toitles that smiled should be turned upside down into a frown. The new breed don't seem all that cheerful. Must've been Raph's constant sarcasm wearing them down over the years...

Look tasty - most likely better than the turtles I ate in the past.

An ice cream guy driving around my block had WWF ice cream bars. the WWF has been WWE for several years now. So I bought one. The undertaker, not bad except it was the old school "dead man" charecter from the mid 90's. So I ate it. Then I felt like the dead man. If a child with a weaker immune system were to eat this, they would be meeting the undertaker personally. ice cream guys are evil.

Wow. Just realized I haven't seen an ice cream truck in a couple years. They don't come around my neighborhood. I was always a screwball guy, myself.

PS-Target had two Unicron figures on sale for, get this, $13.98 ea!!! Now I have my own little planet-eating planet.

I always loved to eat the eyeballs first to blind my turtle, and make my teeth blue. WOW nice to know they are still around somewhere.

Chestnuts roasted by rimmie @ 08/09/2004 10:02 PM EST

Wait a second, how long has that new logo been up? Bumblebee's faceless metal head no longer stares eyelessly at us...

Chestnuts roasted by G'Tron @ 08/09/2004 10:20 PM EST

About a day. It's kinda temporary. Just wanted to look at something different for a while. And the new X-E logo was literally made from this past Sunday's newspaper.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 08/09/2004 10:22 PM EST

Matt, I'll never understand why you always throw away perfectly good food instead of eating it!

Chestnuts roasted by KMC @ 08/09/2004 10:25 PM EST

can't say i have ever eaten a turtle ice cream thingee. it doesn't really look too appealing as i don't find flourecent green ice cream very tempting. Over the weekend i visited my friend and we watched the 3 part "headmasters" episodes from the 3rd season of transformers. I really wanted to vomit...its funny how alot of shows i thought were sweet as a kid just suck now. A prime example would be thundercats. If it isn't the extremely horrible voice acting that gets me its the horrible animation. I don't know, maybe I have become a bitter old man in a 23 year old body. blah blah blah....

Chestnuts roasted by phunqsauce @ 08/09/2004 10:27 PM EST

Man, I haven't had ice-cream from an ice-cream truck in YEARS....And only rarely before that. I surprised that they still have that Mario ice-cream bar; that's the only one I remember eating.

BTW, Matt, how hot is it there? I know that here in Texas, that Ninja Turtle bar wouldn't have lasted half a second--much less long enough to take pictures of it...

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 08/09/2004 10:28 PM EST

So, you'll eat stale candy that been stored in giant Slimer heads for ten years, cereal promoting the first Batman movie, and expired Jurrasic Park cookies, but you won't eat a simple TMNT pop?

Matt, for shame. wink

Chestnuts roasted by Mr. Mr. Mr. @ 08/09/2004 10:46 PM EST

There wasn't time. It was either that or a cigarette.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 08/09/2004 10:47 PM EST

man, I loved those wwf bars

Chestnuts roasted by E @ 08/09/2004 10:48 PM EST

I've heard that ice cream men in the neighborhood sell drugs from the truck.

I myself have always prefered the Loony Tunes push-up pops.

Chestnuts roasted by Jimmy Putty @ 08/09/2004 10:49 PM EST

God I love this site. Don't ever quit.

Chestnuts roasted by Shredder @ 08/09/2004 11:21 PM EST

WHAT? You didn't even take a bite!

I remember those. I didn't remember the pudding things, but I remember those.

Chestnuts roasted by Piscez @ 08/09/2004 11:55 PM EST

Hm...we have an ice cream man around town. His cart is bike-drivin and he never really stops. So maybe it's just his means of transport.

Chestnuts roasted by Walks @ 08/10/2004 01:35 AM EST

Yes! Special Brownies! hehe ho ho hoo hoo hoo ha ha ha.

Chestnuts roasted by fdssdfdsf @ 08/10/2004 04:13 AM EST

The ice cream truck that goes through my neighborhood has had TMNT pops every summer for 10 years.

Chestnuts roasted by Gunder Wing @ 08/10/2004 07:22 AM EST

Is that supposed to be Michelangelo?

Chestnuts roasted by Blah...blah @ 08/10/2004 09:30 AM EST

I live in the uk where ninja's were once banned and replaced by heros. I would have gladly eaten a turtle ice cream, so in future post them to me at the usual address.

Chestnuts roasted by gaz @ 08/10/2004 09:39 AM EST

Matt, does that mean you like cigarettes more than TMNT?

:o

Chestnuts roasted by Snot Man @ 08/10/2004 09:54 AM EST

I've only ever had one Ninja Turtle bar like that....ONE. But I remember it....oh yes, how could I forget? It was AWESOME.

Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 08/10/2004 10:54 AM EST

Now, if you had found a ice-cream man selling Pac-Man pops, imagine what passers-by would have thought then.

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 08/10/2004 11:40 AM EST

An ice cream truck showed up unexpectly in my neighborhood about a month ago. No novelties though, just the simple ice cream/rocket pops. Hasn't been here since.

Chestnuts roasted by JLAJRC @ 08/10/2004 12:28 PM EST

Ahhh, the ice cream truck! It makes me yearn for the days of the old WWF Ice Cream Bar. Eating a cookie adorned with Hillbilly Jim's image! Deeeeelicious!

Chestnuts roasted by Sweetie @ 08/10/2004 01:49 PM EST

Has anyone up in NJ been to Wildwood boardwalk lately? This Wack the Iraq thingy is un-buh-lieve-able.

http://www.nbc10.com/news/3636863/detail.html

Man, this place NEVER ceases to amaze and revile.

Chestnuts roasted by Blah...blah @ 08/10/2004 03:06 PM EST

At least the Ice Truck looks in good condition. The trucks that swing through my area look like they have come straight from the wrecking lot, or a van down by the river, and usually driven by a guy named Ali-al Abbabar.

Those Popsicle bars are so awesome. And they're not too bad for you either, if I remember correctly. Certainly better than a cigarette, at any rate.

I'm pretty sure those Mario bars are permanently gone. The last truck I visited had duct taped an X over poor Mario's picture. I asked anyway, but to no avail. So I settled for a Sponge Bob bar.....just not the same.

Chestnuts roasted by 4th Down @ 08/11/2004 09:10 AM EST

Those are good! I remember getting them a few times when I was a kid. (I barely ever saw an ice cream truck.) But why did you throw it away?

Chestnuts roasted by Anna @ 08/11/2004 07:52 PM EST

I think I remember mentioning these things on a blog before and mentioning the bandana ice cream and how I was the only one to have ever used the phrase "bandana ice cream" on the internet.

Anyhow, I've noticed that every single one of these new pops I've ever seen has been based on the likes of Michelangelo, and all the original ones were only based on Donatello and Raphael. As far as I know, there has never been a Lenoardo pop. Conspiracy?

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 08/11/2004 10:28 PM EST

There's a Bart Simpson one out there somewhere but I have yet to try it. I'm usually more of a soft serve chick than a novelty ice chick.

Chestnuts roasted by AngeFaitore @ 08/12/2004 08:20 AM EST

So I am guessing you don't have Bubble-O-Bill? Yum.

You people are all beautifully interesting.
Never change.

Chestnuts roasted by The Vampire Cullen @ 08/13/2004 12:23 AM EST

Personally I'm a fan of the Pink Panther ice creams of the same nature. The gumball eyes are still just ick though

Chestnuts roasted by Megan @ 08/13/2004 03:26 AM EST

Oh my shit, no! Those things have come back to haunt me.

I almost died eating one of those when I was a kid, and I am *not* lying. Email me (gnoose@actionfigureadventures.net) if you want to hear the story.

I'll try to make it exciting.

hi

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 08/13/2004 03:43 PM EST

Bubble-O-Bill!!! My God it's all coming back to me now. I would sell my first-born child for one of those. And as far as the WWF ice-cream bars; they used to be my holy grail as a child. The WWF always used to advertise that they were sold in most grocery stores, but it was only the drug dealer who ran his business out of the ice cream truck who ever had them in CT.

Resurrect Bubble-O-Bill!!!
Resurrect Aged WWF ice cream bars!!!

Back when the X-Men cartoon was really popular on Fox, I remember the ice cream man selling X-Men ice cream bars. They were the exact same ice cream bar as the WWF one, except instead of a wrestler on your ice cream, it was an X-Men character, and you received an X-Men trading card instead of a WWF trading card.

There was another ice cream bar I used to order everytime the ice cream man came to my neighborhood, I don't remember the name, but it was something about a vampire ice cream bar or something. When you bit it, your tongue would turn red and it would have a black or red inside. I don't remember what the filling was made of, but those ice cream bars were my all-time favorite until I was turned on to Mario and WWF ice cream bars.

I was always a fan of the Great White lemon pop

Okay so what is worst mascot: Dr Angus selling BK's awful lies with the "angus steak" burger, or Mr 6 and his wacky dancing?

Chestnuts roasted by RandomHero @ 08/16/2004 02:51 AM EST

Anyone ever have the NASCAR bars from the ice cream man? Damn those were good, but they get stuck in your mullet too easily.

Chestnuts roasted by Jesus @ 08/16/2004 02:36 PM EST

yeah bubble o bills are sold pretty much everywhere in australia. well in my city anyway. it has been ages since i looked into an ice-cream freezer. i loved bubble o bills- pretty much the same as the ninja turtle ice-cream except he was a cowboy, had a moustache and a bubble gum ball for a nose. you didnt even know which colour nose you were going to get. and oooooh, written on the nose was a saying that cowboys are supposed to say i think... mmmm.

Chestnuts roasted by Rachel Cakes @ 08/16/2004 08:37 PM EST

Never had TMNT or WWF, just lots & lots of pac men. After spending Grandma's dollar I morphed into a ghost and exacted revenge against that foul mouthed cheese wedge. Then I had to go brush my teeth for ten minutes. Come to think of it, the idea of giving children money and sending them into the street unsupervised to flag down a moving vehicle driven by a would be pedophile terrorist has odd implications. My parents don't love me after all!

Chestnuts roasted by wasteoid @ 08/18/2004 01:47 AM EST

No one cares about my brush with death...

...just as well. It's not that great of a story. I used a tooth pick to extract the eyes, and it fell into my mouth and kept going, choking me.

The Heimlich maneuver really works, kids. smile

Chestnuts roasted by G'Noose @ 08/18/2004 04:46 PM EST

You know, ice cream trucks are usually fronts for drug dealing operations.

Chestnuts roasted by jordan @ 08/18/2004 07:21 PM EST

I'm seriously gonna check that out about them bein' drug dealers, cos where I'm from it only seems to be taxi drivers who deal weed...

Think i should be an ice cream man n use the munchies to my advantage...

this girl is an obvious liar, as the original eyes of the turtle pop were red, not blue

Man, I haven't seen a ninja turtle ice cream bar in a long time. They were definately the best, and yes I remember always waiting until the end to eat the ice cream ball eyes. I would never think of eating them first...that's crazy talk.
