10/17/2004 Entry: "Freddy Krueger Costume / Jason DVDs."

Weekend warriors notwithstanding, those of you who haven't been here in a few days NEED to make sure you've checked some of the other articles I posted criminally late. Everything from pet costumes to Bo Knows to me wearing devil eyes and beyond. Today's entry on the Halloween Countdown kicks off a three-day series focused on slasher costumes 4 kidz, yo. First up, Freddy Krueger. I'm still listening to that album at every given opportunity, by the way.

Okay, so I don't know what some of them there people were talking about -- I LOVE the Friday the 13th DVD set. Really. It's not presented as on grand a scale as the Freddy set, but I think I can explain that one easily -- the people involved with Elm Street movies are generally higher up on the pole than the Jason crew. That said, most of the people involved with the F13 series show up here in extras or during commentaries, and that includes Mama Voorhees, whose contribution more or less consisted of "I hated being in this movie it was below me but man what a great thing it all was!" I love her anyway. I didn't get a chance to watch everything yet, but I'm pretty pleased. Like I said in an earlier post, I already own most of the movies on DVD. Commentaries, extras and a cool looking box was all that could satisfy me, and they won on all three counts. It's not as good as it could be, but few things are. Totally recommended.

Here's your obvious survey question: What are y'all doing for Halloween, anyways?

I can't believe they finally released the box-set.

YES!

Oh yeah, for Halloween I'm going Trick or Treating with my friends, then going to a party.

I'm from New Jersey, I have a gut and a bit of body hair. So my Halloween costume will consist of:

- A bald cap.
- A fake mustache.
- A wife-beater.
- Blue sweatpants.
- A crappy gold chain.

Whether or not I wear a belt that grants me super powers based on Foreigner songs is up in the air.

Chestnuts roasted by Gavok @ 10/17/2004 10:42 PM EST

I got it Matt.. the mumbles reference.. hehe.

All my friend laughed at me when I excitedly ran out and bought Dick Tracy on dvd the day it was released.

Chestnuts roasted by EyeLikeP00 @ 10/17/2004 10:44 PM EST

I think the youthfulness of the mask has something to do w/ your nephew's long eyelashes. Maybe if he was wearing the white contact leses AND the mask, he might be able to pull "evil Freddy" off. Are you going to let him have one of the costumes for his trouble?

Chestnuts roasted by trajeal @ 10/17/2004 11:06 PM EST

I'm working with my parents to throw a mild, child-based Halloween party. I'm in charge of the movies. I can't use the classic slash and dash films. My choices? "Labrynth" and "The Witches."

Chestnuts roasted by Mr. Mr. Mr. @ 10/17/2004 11:12 PM EST

The costume didn't come with THE glove? That doesn't make an ounce of sense.
As for Halloween, dress up on Friday for my students (who am I kidding, I just want to dress up) and then a family Halloween party. It's what all the 25 year old teachers do....I guess.

Chestnuts roasted by manimal789 @ 10/17/2004 11:20 PM EST

I love me some Freddy costumes. There. I said it.

Chestnuts roasted by bdsghost @ 10/17/2004 11:24 PM EST

Hey I got it too. I also enjoyed dick tracy quite a bit, and was just quoting from it the other day.

My Halloween plans aren't really based on halloween. My best friend just moved back to town after we had been apart for about 3 years. durring those three years each of us turned 21 separatly, and had really really really shitty 21st parties...so even though I'm 23 & he's 22 we're gonna be 21 for halloween (I think his wife may even go for us having a party)

Chestnuts roasted by brandon @ 10/18/2004 12:32 AM EST

Matt, I notice on the box it shows a glove and black stripes on the shirt. Did you get ripped off?

PS Your site rocks. I'm a long-time lurker, first-time poster. Post #13 talking about a Freddy costume...coincidence or deadly prophesy? I'm scared to sleep tonight...

Chestnuts roasted by HarryLerman @ 10/18/2004 12:52 AM EST

Hmm...

1. Kobe Bryant jersey
2. Freddy costume

Coincidence? I think not!

Keep up the good work Matt.

I will hopefully be sucking down some cold ones this halloween. I don't know why I just don't get into the whole dressing up part. I guess I'll be "drunk guy" this year....just like the past years....sigh.......one of the biggest Halloween parties in the USA happens south of me in Athens, Ohio. The Halloween parade at Ohio University is fucking HUGE. I've only gone down there once and it was all I could handle. When you get that many drunk people in a relatively small area bad things tend to happen. Well if you have spare time Matt and and want a CRAZY Halloween bash to cover, make a trip down to Ohio University on October, 30 and see the craziness unfold.

I didn't even see the survey. I'm going to take a late night walk out of town with a friend, while discussing meaningless philosophy, as is the tradition for my halloween.

Chestnuts roasted by Andrew_the_stroud @ 10/18/2004 10:00 AM EST

My problem with the boxed set is that I would've liked to have seen the unrated versions, since virtually every movie in the series had a ton of stuff cut out in order to get the R rating. If I didn't know that there were discs in other regions with the unrated version of (at least) the first movie, I probably wouldn't mind so much.

Chestnuts roasted by Ubu Rex @ 10/18/2004 10:03 AM EST

I will be masterbating and handing out candy... But not in that order...

Trick or Treat.

Chestnuts roasted by spazzamatic @ 10/18/2004 10:13 AM EST

I'll be wishing there was a party for me to go to that didn't involve either a fraternity or a sorority. Then I'll probably make up a costume with what I have in my closet, wear it around all day but not go anywhere interesting, and go to bed early. Yay for me!

Chestnuts roasted by Mara @ 10/18/2004 10:28 AM EST

Ubu -- on the extras disc they do show you a lot of the uncut stuff, side by side with the theatrical releases.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 10/18/2004 10:33 AM EST

Matt: Thanks for the heads up. I didn't remember seeing that when I read the extras list, but that was a fairly long time before they came out, so maybe I should take another look.

I don't really know who I think I'm kidding. I'll be buying it eventually anyway...

Chestnuts roasted by Ubu Rex @ 10/18/2004 10:36 AM EST

I'm thinking pumpkin carving, glowing balloon monster making, and appley shrunken head cooking. Then a terrible B&W horror movie, as is the tradition. Same group of friends as every year since we started turning our college dorm into a haunted house. That was 7 years ago. Man, I'm getting old...

Chestnuts roasted by Jimbalaya @ 10/18/2004 10:41 AM EST

Damn, trajeal beat me to it. I think your nephew's eyelashes are a bit too bring-you-to-your-knees beautiful for him to wear that mask.

For Halloween, I'm going to the bars with friends, and as usual, I'll be dressed as Andy Warhol. No one ever, ever gets it, even though I wear the wig, all-black clothes, and carry a camera and cigarette around. I swear, if someone came up to me and said, "Cool! Andy Warhol!" I'd probably marry him on the spot.

Maybe I'll persuade my friends to go as Marilyn Monroe, Jackie O, and a Campbell's soup can. THEN people might get it.

Chestnuts roasted by Emily @ 10/18/2004 10:44 AM EST

Emily,
You could paint the same beer bottle many times on the same canvas in a variety of bright colors. People would just have to come over to see what you're doing, so that might help. Good luck.

Chestnuts roasted by Jimbalaya @ 10/18/2004 11:10 AM EST

Gavok - will you also be putting neon and flames on your above ground pool so it looks like its tearin' ass around the backyard? He he. ATHF rocks!

I'll probably go drinking down town for Halloween since there's usually some big bash down there. I'll probably go as John Cena. Alls I need is a chain and a padlock. One question though, should I wear my knockoff "You Can't See Me" camo t-shirt, or my old-school Toronto Maple Leafs jersey? I leave that to you, the readers. I'll even give links to pictures afterwards.

Matt, you'll get the links to the best pics if you review "Mac and Me" (and no, that's NOT a come-on!).

Chestnuts roasted by A-wel Cruiz @ 10/18/2004 11:28 AM EST

I'll be spending Halloween in a (supposedly) haunted theatre. Am slightly concerned as (a) there will only be 4 of us in there (plus any undead loitering around) (b) the only protection i'll have will be alcohol and a sleeping bag (no proton packs for me) and (c) i'm likely to get lost, meet a ghost and need therapy for the foreseeable future

Chestnuts roasted by Toeknee @ 10/18/2004 11:57 AM EST

Thanks Matt for all the updates! I loved the one with the cat.

On Halloween I'll be relaxing after a week full of live wrestling. On the 30th I'll be filming at a show with Mick Foley, Steve Corino and Zach Gowen in Germany. That's going to be good! Going to let Foley sign my copy of 'have a nice day' wink.

We don't have Halloween in Holland anyway, so all the time to relax...

Chestnuts roasted by Sjoerd Zegers @ 10/18/2004 11:59 AM EST

I'm taking my nephew Trick-or-Treating, and dressing up to do it. If you take youngsters around the 'hood, go the extra mile and get a decent costume for yourself. The kids appreciate it, and some homes will give you a little something for the effort. I'm 34 and I've come away win a nice batch of candy just for running around in a sorcerer's robe with a skeieton suit underneath. "That's nice, dressing up with your little one. You want a candy bar?" you know I do!

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 10/18/2004 12:15 PM EST

I pity the fool who doenst dress up like Mr. T

F13 set is good. But instead of more sequels, why not have UPN do a weekly F13 series (not like that short0run stupid one) which just has jason killin different teens every week? then there could be cameos like jason, leatherface, mikey myers, etc, and it wouldnt have to be a huge deal... like new line call dimension and be like, hey lets throw pinhead up in this weeks episode, him and jason can have tea!

I live in Salem, MA so my halloween will consit of me freaking out that I can't go ANYWHERE in my city until tomorrow and then our landlord will guilt us into giving out halloween candy while she takes her kids trick or treating...everyone within a 50 mile radius of the city brings their kids to Salem to trick or treat...why?? Our mini-Snickers tastes the same as everyone elses!

Matt,
I assure you, Mrs. Voorhies aka actress Betsy Palmer is very proud of the Friday the 13th film. A good buddy of mine at work is friends with Jason's mom herself, and she has even graced our lowly office environment in a cameo appearance. I assure you she's into the film and the film's fans. Don't give folks the wrong impression. Keep up the great work (love the crazy contact lenses article)

Heh. Since its release, I've been playing the discs from the F13 set loud and proud in the video store where I work.

We have a very nice setup in the store:
The movie simultaneously feeds into seven seperate televisions suspended from the ceilings around the establishment, making the nightly showings quite the spectacle.

I have gotten weird looks for playing horror movies loudly in a mainstream video store, but there have been no real complaints per se, which is surprising. I figured that I would have gotten at least one "do you think that's appropriate to be playing here?" by now.

Perhaps customers are more indulgent of my eccentricities because of the nearness of Halloween.

I've also showed the Dawn of the Dead Ultimate Edition in the store. It's quite impressive and is well worth buying for any DotD fan.

Kristian,

that's male or female? I pity that name.

Chestnuts roasted by Mr. T @ 10/18/2004 02:53 PM EST

I've always preferred Freddy since he the one that does talk.

I'm I the only one that thinks that the kiddy costumes and supposedly less scary costumes are more scary than the adult and gory costumes?

For example, I was at a Halloween boutique and amid all the Freddy, Jason, Chucky, devils, evil clowns, decapitated heads, etc, guess which mask creeped me out the most?

Shrek. It had a big grin and big eyeholes that just creeped me out.

BTW, has anyone seen those oversized masks like a dragon head or the devil from Legend? It seems like you can fit at least three heads in those things.

Chestnuts roasted by JLAJRC @ 10/18/2004 03:23 PM EST

I'll probably just buy some candy and eat it while playing Mortal Kombat online all night.

I'm going to skip the F13 set.

A) It just doesn't feel complete without ALL of the movies. Yeah, the other ones not included SUCKED, but I'm a total completist.
B) I know they're going to eventually release a full set anyway, so what's the use?

With that said, the Nightmare set was awesome. I just need a Hellraiser set and a Halloween set, and I'll be set.

Chestnuts roasted by Crippler @ 10/18/2004 03:28 PM EST

I am going to be on vacation in Turkey this year for Halloween. I'm excited about vacation, but love Halloween so much I am sad to be gone for it. At least I have another year to decide on a cool costume...

B-Dawg - my sister-in-law is an ER nurse at Salem Hospital and says it's CRAZY in the ER on Halloween. So, it could always be worse. You could have to spend the night with the freaks in the hospital!

Chestnuts roasted by mike @ 10/18/2004 11:43 PM EST

Me? For Halloween? Well...

I was thinking of dressing all in black and walking around my neighborhood with a satchel full of wooden stakes and actually putting a stake through the heart of every kid that dressed like a vampire. I've researched the local laws and I could totally get away with it.

And during my research I ran accross some strange legislation allowing the practice of public defecation, so if my first plan goes to pieces I'll have something to do.

Yeah, I'm just going to stay home and hand out candy, probably. My life kind of sucks.

KidneyBoy, have you tried to paint a basketball? Or some largish, but thick-rinded, playground ball of some sort? Might not work for your intended use, but might yield some spectacular and useful failures.

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 10/19/2004 11:51 AM EST

Oooh, that's a good idea for Kidneyboy, kingklash. What about one of those $3 shiny rubber balls that live in the big cages at discount stores?

JG, I'm in love with the Catwoman idea. Or specifically, I think it'd be cool to see a bunch of people dressed as his film nemeses--the Joker, the Penguin, Catwoman, Two-Face, the Riddler, Mr. Freeze, and Poison Ivy.

You know I'm a vegan, so I call Poison Ivy.

Woo-Hah! The Bay Area is a excellent place to Trick or Treat! Seems like everyone and everything dresses up for Hallowe'en! After all, it is the only place around where you can see a bumper sticker that says, "Honk if you ARE Jesus!" My early childhood was spent out there. So far, nothing. Makes me miss the days when my family would go crazy with the house for the holiday. My brother and I would get the day off from school, and we would help my dad and uncle decorate the yard and house with some really good stuff - pro-quality stuff. We'd set it up and dismantle it, so less people would see it and try to steal ideas. Then all of our friends would come over and help out. When we wanted to make people wet their pants, we would! Every year there was always someone that would use a chainsaw, and they would have to chase people down our street and the neighboring streets. It was our second Christmas.

Currently, sitting here at work eagerly awaiting the arrival of my Halloween contact lenses - Totally black, full eye covering, no-white-to-be-seen style, perscription contacts. They will most likely be uncomfortable/slightly painful but so full of creepy goodness as to make it all worth while! My own party will feature the same costume get-up but is next Saturday - still gotta finish decorating the house... So much to do - and I'm at work! sad

Halloween roadtrip!!!! I'm gonna dress as Billie Joe from the American Idiot video. Surprise!

This is an amazingly simple costume btw:

Black shirt
Red tie
Black Hair dye
mascara

plus I've made a heart-grenade stencil for my forearm.

Don't use sharpies on your skin kids! I've been stupid enough to do it before, so I will risk it again. Don't try this step at home unless you want to spend the next week scraping a layer of your skin off =)

Oh and I'd recommend a strat/strat knock-off, or even better a Les Paul for 100% accuracy. Too bad I've only got a Pbass =(

Pretty simple stuff for me on Halloween. First and main event will be the good old movie Evil Dead on DVD, which I bought primarily for this occasion. Then from there, I'll either check the TV for possible horror movies on it or play a game like Eternal Darkness (my Silent Hill 3 was stolen last year, and I currently only have The Ring on DVD as a horror movie...and obviously, that one isn't really all that good of a match for Halloween).
