06/07/2005 Entry: "Return of the Shrunken Head Apple Thing!"

I'd like to reintroduce you to an old friend. Remember this article, the "Shrunken Head Apple Project?" It's one of my favorites, if only for being a case where me telling you to do something wasn't just to fill space. Turning apples into horrific shrunken heads really is a good idea. The article was published in October of 2003, and at that point, my shrunken apple head thing looked a lot like Doc from Back To The Future. In June of 2005, it looks like Doc's corpse.

Look, if you can turn an apple into something that still looks cool almost two years later, it's worth trying. So try it. Go on, build your fruity shrunken head. He'll be your good luck charm. Your good luck charm attracts bugs.

"Look, it you can"?

What's with all these updates Matt? There's too many for me to keep up.

Doho, thanks for catching that early enough for me to fix it without inspiring a mockingly new catchphrase.

Hee hee, cool article. I like how it looks at the present, and you are right, it DOES look like Doc's corpse. : )

Thanks for inspiring my new short name "Doho". I love it.

I have a stupid question for ya, Matt. How much of your blog do you read and when it gets updated do you receive a certain signal that tells you have a new posting? I only ask stupid questions because I am stupid but I always wondered how you responded to the posts so quickly...?

Chestnuts roasted by phunqsauce @ 06/07/2005 10:43 PM EST

Somethingth. And cool apple, btw. I like the googly eyes

Chestnuts roasted by DocDragon @ 06/07/2005 10:49 PM EST

I have the option of being notified when someone posts, but I don't really use it. I check the blog pretty frequently, though, and since really only the top 1-3 entries get new posts on any given day, it's not hard to keep up with. It also helps the flow of the conversations if I'm around to remove double/triple posts and whatnot as soon as possible. Mostly, it's just fun to post about something and see where the conversations end up 50 posts later.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 06/07/2005 10:50 PM EST

Sorry for the ot, but does anyone remember those satin pillow like things with tinsel hanging from them? I can't remember exactly what they were called, but they used to come in shapes like stars or hearts, etc. It was like a mid 80's thing. Thanks!

Chestnuts roasted by TW @ 06/07/2005 10:51 PM EST

Right on, that is part of the appeal of this site is that the blog can end up in some strange and interesting directions (see photog, then again who hasn't?). As always keep up the good work!!

I think that image should be in the X-E main page in the upcoming new design. You know, like the stickers in this page.

What do you think of that idea, Matt?

BTW You wouldn't believe how hard it is to type while eating corn on the cob. I've made and corrected unfathomable mistakes in this post.

TW - are you talking about those 80s puffy satin things you hang on your wall. I'm not aware of an actual product name.

I have a couple in storage but I don't think there's identifying marks to reference or else I'd dig them out and tell you their proper name.

Shrunkin' Pumpkin!

Would that work? No one is scared of the standard carved pumpkin anymore. What the world needs is an army of pickled jack o'lantern corpses.

Chestnuts roasted by Carri @ 06/08/2005 12:35 PM EST

Ha ha Queej!! It does look like Large Marge.
Carri, yeah, I think some of them could be hung on the wall, but the ones that I remember could be hung from the ceiling, and had the tinsel hanging from them. I remember, vaguely, like stars and hearts, and they were always pastel. My 7 year old has been asking me questions about when I was younger, and I couldn't for the life of me remember what they were called!! Thanks for your reply, though.

Chestnuts roasted by TW @ 06/08/2005 12:38 PM EST

Whatever you do, please don't add this to the list of things you eat for the website. We can be content knowing you didn't eat the two year old googly-eyed rotten apple. Kudos for showing the pic though.

Chestnuts roasted by goethewannabe @ 06/08/2005 01:00 PM EST

I acctually had to make one of those in jr high. I think it's still at my parents house, It's got a body too, made out of a hairspray bottle and covered with hideous blue fabric for clothing. The face is black as tar, with the exception of the paint (eyes, nose, mouth) She now looks 174 years old.

Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 06/08/2005 01:03 PM EST

I love the shrunken apple heads! After reading your article, I made 6 shrunken apple heads for my Halloween party and hung them from the ceiling above the food. They looked super creepy and appropriately leathery. They were a huge hit!

A few days later I hid them throughout my co-worker's desk because he had questioned if making shrunken apple heads was a good use of my time. They definitely creeped him out.

I don't work there anymore.

Ok, I need some help from this fine community. Remember when Matt reviewed "Heartbeeps"? Well, in a cruel twist of fate, the powers that be decided that I should be the one to translate it and subtitle it for Brazilian Cable TV. Why they decided to show this movie is beyond me. Maybe they're running out of options. In any case, I'm getting a copy of the movie but without a script. So my plea to you is: does anyone know if I can download this script on the Net? Even one of them Divx subtitle files would help. It's more of a safety line really, in case there's any passage on the movie that I can't quite understand. Any help is appreciated.

Chestnuts roasted by Roddy @ 06/08/2005 01:23 PM EST

Roddy, not sure if you'd be able to download it but am pretty confident that you'll be able to find somewhere online to buy it.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 06/08/2005 01:29 PM EST

Is anyone else creeped out by the fact that the bottom half of the head has disintegrated into a gigantic mushy mess?

Also, what's with some of the posts here being underlined when I hover over them? I can't figure out why that happens, or why only some of the posts do it, and my curiosity has now sprung into action. I demand answers, or ask politely for them if that fails. >_>

Chestnuts roasted by The ORIGINAL Paul @ 06/08/2005 01:29 PM EST

Well, Matt, do you think it's a terribly difficult movie for a non-English speaking person to understand? I mean, are there blurry lines, messed up screaming or funky robot dialogues that I should be aware of?

Roddy -- here you go...15 bucks and it's yours:

Script City

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 06/08/2005 01:34 PM EST

Roddy: Well, the one benefit with Heartbeeps is, considering the characters (ROBOTZZZ), most of the dialogue is spoken verrry slowly and it probably doesn't use much translatable slang.

Paul: I've noticed that, but only in Firefox. No idea why it happens.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 06/08/2005 01:36 PM EST

THanks, Matt. But unless the company will buy it for me, I ain't paying. lol That'd be a third of what I'll get to translate it!

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 06/08/2005 01:37 PM EST

Ah, ok then. It shouldn't be that tough. And slow means it'll be easy to arrange the subtitles. I think I'll be good. wink

I'm so upset about Brett Ratner directing X3!! I was sad when Bryan Singer left, got my hopes up with Vaughn, and now I'm just....worried. Worried it'll suck.
In a perfect world, current Astonishing X-Men writer and overall genius, Joss Whedon (the guy who did 'Buffy', 'Angel', and even better- 'Firefly') would be directing this, but he wanted to be able to write it as well. I say - let him! His work on Astonishing X-Men as well as previous titles is amazing, and he has a true sense of these characters....I'm worried what they'll do to my X-Men in the 3rd one.

Does anyone else remember popsicles that were shaped like bears or something? I seem to recall something like that, but I can't for the life of me remember any names, or even if they were actual popsicles and not some insane 80's retro dream-wish. All I can even think of is trying to suck off the facial features first (get your minds out of the gutter, you two!). Anyone? Buelher?

As for the shrunken head, I am in no way suprised that Matt still has it. In fact, I bet he still has the Chia Pet somewhere, he just can't remember where he put it and that's the real reason the Chia article never got finished.

We sometimes made homemade popsicles with kool-air or juice and the plastic forms we used were shaped like different characters.

Chestnuts roasted by Carri @ 06/09/2005 11:29 AM EST

That's what I'm thinking. Looking on the magical mystery information superhighway, I've found nothing about what you're describing. I did however learn that popsicles were invented by an 11 year old.

Chestnuts roasted by jhnnywalkr @ 06/09/2005 11:39 AM EST

After reading the original article, I made myself a shrunken-head apple for Halloween (I used the same styrofoam eyes because I had a pack of them around). I still have it, and while it's deteriorated a bit, it doesn't look anywhere near as bad as Matt's. I think it's because I used the traditional method (lengthy outdoor drying) rather than the microwave.

Chestnuts roasted by Jack of Spades @ 06/09/2005 11:49 AM EST

I kinda remeber something like those Popsicles, but right now, i'm kind of running on strange energy. My Pop had quad-bypass surgery yesterday. It went gangbusters. It was a sudden choice for the hospital. First it was supposed to be a Roto-Rootering of an artery, then just one bypass, next thing you know, he's getting a four-barrel carbs, Hooker headers, Thrush pipes, neon ground effects, and Xzibit telling us they just Pimp'd my dad. Little Brother came back down from KS Tuesday. We're going back to the hospital to check on the old man this afternoon. My family has a slightly odd medical history. Pop was feelin' poorly lately, and he thought it might be cused by Diabetes. (runs strong on both sides of my family) But what happened was kind of like what happened to Letterman. "Let's do a overnight check, run a few tests and maybe adjust your..... LET'S CRACK THE OLD CHOCTAW MAN OPEN, STAT!" A couple years ago, I was participating in a Native American cardiac health study, (they were also interested in my bout of Rheumatic Fever during my high school days) and they found something of concern. They arranged a appointment a few days later. After getting poked with the needles and such, the doc comes in and flips through my chart. "How long have you been diabetic?" "uh, A minute and a half?" We'd be in really good health if people would quit telling us how sick we are.

Man, I haven't commented in a while. I've been checking in, but nobody knows it. I had to post after I saw myself up there. smile

Yeah trajeal, those popsicles are probably the Disney ones. I still remember them, almost two years (and then some) later. Yeah, they were very compact, Matt, just as you described.

This makes me wonder how many things we've brought up here over the years that were previously discussed and we just didn't know it. Hmmm...

Add me to the list of people who are glad your Dad is okay, kingklash. Before you know it, he'll be back to normal.

Also, from that 2003 popsicle entry... I still want another one of those Wolverine popsicles. It's hard to believe it's been so long.

We had literal "fights" this year over our Kinder Advent Calendars (which Matt sadly didn't want to mention as I blabbered about it forever). We had to basically keep on them under lock and key and it was a big deal every morning to see what someone did or didn't get.

So anyone else besides ole Johnny Walker coming for the free beer? Supplies are limited.

Semper Fi,
Erik Majorwitz

Pops is looking better than has in quite a while. We're going back up there this evening. Today's Payday, so I'll be getin' a good Get Well gift on the way to OKC.
Revenge O' Tha Fist is finally here in my little town! Should be a nice way to drop $3.50 plus snacks. When during the film can I ask "When do they hit the iceburg?" Hope I dont start singing "Puttin' on the Ritz" when Big Daddy Vader hops off the lube rack.
"Mr. Vader sir? Not only did we have to give you the Dr. Doom treatment, we had to remove your wanger."
"NNNNOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo!"

Ok,enough of this bullshit. Wher is the layout gonna be up on the mainpage. Who cares about cross browser problems. Let the people using Firefox suffer! HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!

EMajorwitz
Have you heard about the different versions there are of the movie? is there a specific one you want?

Chestnuts roasted by RAS @ 06/10/2005 02:46 PM EST

I just hate the fact that only the big bases in Germany got Episode III and only showed it for a three days and then, gone...

I guess my tiny little corner of Germany will never see Episode III until George Lucas puts his "Special Edition" touch on it.

Anyone is fine with me.

Don't really know, but is it possible that the base is blocking it via a firewall?

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 06/10/2005 04:57 PM EST

I live off base though. I wonder what happened.

My video for ESPN.com is doing the same thing. I went to download Flash 7 again, but I can't download it either.

Feast your eyes upon this Star Wars Episode III Collectors pack including "Blingin'" Vader:

Star Wars 9-Pack

Chestnuts roasted by Kennef @ 06/10/2005 05:32 PM EST

Got a little sad today when I went to Wal-Mart and the EPISODE III stuff is slowly diminishing. Fewer cereal boxes, no snack tie-ins, etc.
I did buy the gift cards with the various images on them. I asked the cashier if I could buy them separately. She tried and said no. Then, I asked if I could just put 25 cents on them. She tried and said that 5 bucks was the minimum. So, I have a 15 self-credit at Wal-Mart.
Kingklash, hope pops is doing well.

Chestnuts roasted by The Manimal @ 06/10/2005 06:27 PM EST

Kennef, after clicking an ad on that 9-pack page, I'm afraid I am going to have to one-up you, and possibly, if things go well, two-up you.

Few months late on this one, but still, it's the kind of awesomeness that they don't even have a word for. If only I knew about it back around Christmas when they still had them...
One Upped

If only this one were actual size. Or small enough to be on scale with the other action figures. Oh well, it's a remote controlled R2-D2, and that's all that matters.
Two Upped

Chestnuts roasted by Jeff @ 06/10/2005 08:28 PM EST

So, Matt, how's your ROTS collection coming along?

Chestnuts roasted by DarkPrimus @ 06/10/2005 10:35 PM EST

Kennef, is it just me or is the Count Dooku in the 9-pack in the wrong place?

Doesn't the value go up for stuff like that, like trading cards missing numbers?

And why am I paying this much attention to such insignificant things?

I need a life =)

Chestnuts roasted by Knegative @ 06/10/2005 10:50 PM EST

I've never understood the attraction many collectors have for figures in the wrong packages.

Collection is coming along, Dark. smile

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 06/10/2005 10:55 PM EST

Me neither. I don't even collect action figures. I'm just curious as to why my powers of hair-splitting have become so honed of late. Boredom perhaps?

Although I do admit to having a copy of every edition of Toxicity and the self-titled System of a Down records.

But I'm a music collector so that makes sense. Or so I say that to relieve my cognitive dissonance =)

He looks freaked, like someone told him Cop Rock would be coming back to tv next season, same cops, same crappy concept, same network, nothing different. Can we get some confirmation on Shrunken Apple Head being freaked out b/c of Cop Rock? Does anyone know what Cop Rock is?

I'm reading a book about the 100 worst moments on television, and apparently, Cop Rock is pretty high up on the list.

The internship rocks. that's all I have to say about that.

My mom and I say the apple looks like Large Marge. I still love those eyes though, nice and big and EXTRA creepy.

large marge is sexy

Glad your Dad is ok now, Kingklash. Scary.

Over here in Incheon, S.Korea, our WalMart had the shittiest Ep.III display EVER- I ran for it, expecting amazing figures, Legos, light sabres, etc. What I got were pyramids of CEREAL, racks and racks of SCHOOL BAGS and 7 count 'em 7 action figures total....not one of them a main character (unless you count pregnant Padme). The display was up for 2 days and now there's nothing.

I guess this means they sold all 7 figures.

Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 06/11/2005 10:21 AM EST

Wow thanks for the linkage ME! It's on right now...I've never managed to catch any of Seanbaby's TV bits...I used to expect to see Matt turn up on one of these panel "I love this week!" shows but it's harder to picture now that he's a big behind-the-scenes hotshot giving out DVDs like a high roller.
Sorry to hear about the troubles, King. Hope everything continues to go well.
I bought a permanent Livejournal as a birthday present to myself (it was yesterday) and now I have more icons than I can shake a stick at...I'd to add some X-E related ones and I want some cool suggestions...don't bother suggesting that horrible apple up there cause that's just gross...

I was at walmart today getting a new air conditioner, and they had a bunch of batman crap out for batman begins. It was like I traveled back in time to 1989.

hey even trailer trash take down their christmas decorations by june!!!

Chestnuts roasted by mr grinch @ 06/11/2005 05:29 PM EST

The Batman Begins line is going to end up losing a lot of money. Why? Because they're doing the exact same thing that killed the Batman lines the first time around: Making approximately twenty-nine bazillion Batman figures for each non-Batman character.

Chestnuts roasted by DarkPrimus @ 06/11/2005 06:07 PM EST
