06/25/2005 Entry: "INCREDIBERRY! And what are your hobbies?"

The All-Day Saturday Survey Thread: Heya folks, it's 1 AM. I'm up. Gonna be up all night. Gonna be Rhonda Shear. Working on a couple of site-related things right now, including a new Kool-Aid review, which got me to thinking -- what are your hobbies? Your real hobbies? You know...stuff you're gonna like and be into no matter how stupid it makes you look. Both new sections on X-E stemmed from the fact that collecting Kool-Aid and cereal prizes became legit hobbies of mine, and the proof's in the pudding, because really, it's pretty damn stupid from a promotions standpoint to devote so much site time to Kool-Aid. I'm doing it just cause I want to. What do you do just cause you want to?

And don't just list them, listers. Tell us about 'em. Tell us how your obsessions started, how you go about the obsessing, yadda yadda.

EDIT: In case you can't tell by the length of this particular Kool-Aid review, we have a new candidate for the #1 flavor. It's Incrediberry! The strawberry/raspberry powerhouse packs everything a Kool-Aidiac could ever want. It changes colors. It smells like Fun Dip. Its package art features an astronaut rock star version of the Kool-Aid Man and a monster made out of a fruit juice. It's really, really red. I love the stuff, and you will too.

1. Horror movies:
I watch, on average, one a night and review them for a crappy website. BG: I've run to the horror section of video stores ever since I was a kid, and now I can waste my time and not get paid for it. The only good thing about the job is the fact that I've met a bunch of cool people like Ken Foree (Dawn), Sid Haig (Spider Baby), Bill Mosely (TCM2), Gunnar Hansen and Marilyn Burns (TCM), and a few other people from House of 1000 Corpses, the Rob man and his wife included.

2. I work at an animal shelter. BG: I like cats and dogs so I got a job hanging out with them. Not much more to it, I guess.

3. College. It's pretty cool.

4. Buying full sets of TV shows on ebay. BG: I got into it when my brother gave me the entire Real Ghostbusters series on VHS for Christmas a few years back. Now I have that, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and a few other sets.

5. Watching Nickelodeon GAS and Nick at Nite. Legends of the Hidden Temple all day and Fresh Prince and Cosby all night... can't beat that with a stick.

Er...
I play bari sax in city band, trombone sometimes.

I like to watch, read, play, know, do things that I didn't get to do when I was a child (you know, the 80's?) which is how I first found this site.

I collect Pink Floyd concerts.
I D/L comic books.
Watch Nick at Nite and Golden Girls.
I like to bake cookies and cakes and dessert breads. hehe, I feel embarrassed typing that one.

I don't know man, this makes my life seem pretty pointless, all in all. So.

Chestnuts roasted by kidneyboy @ 06/25/2005 02:22 AM EST

shit, I didn't mean to be a lister!

I like Pink Floyd a lot, and I am a musician somewhat myself. I also know that live concert performances are, most times, more inspired, more emotional, and more kick-ass than their album versions.

Since Pink Floyd toured pretty much all the way through their career, they played almost their whole catalog on stage, including complete, whole performances of DSOTM, Animals, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall. Also, they played some of these songs for 6-7 years at a time, on every tour.

So I like to get certain concerts, always looking for "THE PERFECT SHOW" but it's never there. Wrong setlist, maybe, or too much crowd noise. Tape hiss, wind, low trebles, all this crazy shit. Some shows are so great, they sound like you are right there. Some are crap, not worth the time it takes to get them.

But it's still important to preserve them, for historical value. A crappy show is still better than no show whatsoever. That's why they are traded lossless only, no mp3's. So I try and get them all, but there is no end. Pink Floyd played hundreds, if not in the 1000's, of shows, and 30 years later, people are still jamming to them. Wish I could go to Live8. sad

God, that all sounds terrible, but oh well, right?

Kidney, I'm assuming you've watched Dark Side of the Rainbow a few times? It falls apart a little by the end, but the first two thirds blow my mind every single time.
I've recently aquired the ugly habit of buying uncut versions of MST3K movies...there are some really sick jokes cut from Hobgoblins. Oh eighties. Another nasty vice of mine is celeb gossip...I've narrowed it down to a select few blogs that keep me pretty well apprised.
My biggest hobbies would probably be reading and writing. I'm working (ever so slowly) on collecting different editions of Harry Potter. I write Carnivale fan fiction (or at least I did, back before HBO stretched my patience thin with all their silliness) and run a fan fic community for it on Livejournal. I also have my own Livejournal which I update constantly, when I'm not posting over here.

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 06/25/2005 02:58 AM EST

squee, yeah, the fabled Dark Side of The Rainbow. It is amazing at the beginning. There is this part where Dorothy is sitting on a plow I think, in the barnyard, looking up. The song is "On the Run" and the sound phases from left to right speaker, and she moves her head exactly in time! Crazy!

The last segment of 2001: A Space Odyssey (Jupiter and Beyond) has been blended with the song "Echoes" and it is as cool, if not even better than Oz. The space scenes are unreal!

Squee, I like your LiveJournal, I read it pretty often. Your dog is cute, but I just don't like those little rat dogs for some reason. Why are they so shaky?

I guess I'm more of a cat guy. I forgot to mention that before. We have 5 cats. Yeah, I know! We had three before, and we wanted one more. But we saw this brother and sister at the Humane Society, and they both were little lovers, so we had to take them home. That was about 2 months ago. Now, just today, we find out that one, a big orange boy, he's been sick, and it's Fatty Liver Disease or syndrome, or something. He has fatty deposits on his liver, which is shutting down. Good thing my g/f's dad is a vet! We have to give him Prednisone, which is one of the steroids that I am also on! One of my anti-rejection meds.

Holy tangents of high posting, Batman! Mattman!

LOL the pup doesn't shake too often, but he definitely will if I've given him a bath or something. Tomorrow he gets his shots and I can finally take him out and about!

Um...haven't I covered all of this stuff before?

The Ataris--one of my best friends got me really into them.

John Cusack Movies/High Fidelity--I was a fan even before I officially became an emo kid, but it skyrocketed upon changeover.

Keanu Movies/Matrix Trilogy--Wasn't a huge fan until I saw Reloaded and my mind was blown apart. But I've been a Keanu fan since Bill & Ted.

Rachael Leigh Cook Movies/Josie & The Pussycats--Saw it one night on Encore and my life hasn't been the same since. I've been a Rachael fan since the 'This is Your Kitchen on Frying Pan' commerical. I have a reference to back that statement up, if need be.

Umm, well I obssess by talking about all of these constantly, thereby testing the limits of my friendships daily. I have posters all over my room and I post Ataris lyrics anywhere people can see them (e.g. The X-E Blog =)

I also play bass and write lyrics constantly, and that shouldn't be regarded as the footnote it has become in this post. It's bigger than everything listed above.

Okay, done =)

I'm a compulsive collector... jumping from one thing to the next... in real life, in my electronic life, and everywhere in between.

In real life, I mainly collect NES games, Homies, and Ninja Turtles Action Figures... The former and latter because of being a child of the late '80s - early '90s. I always as a kid saw all the action figures and wanted them, but couldn't have them... because really, who's parents spend $50 on a damned action playset for their kids' toys? Not most. Same with videogames... you want all of them, even the crappy ones you see... but no, you're only gonna get a couple... So to combat all those years of not getting what I wanted, I get them now! Muwhahaha! No one can stop me from spending $50 on that sewer action playset!

The homies... I don't know what their allure is... just something simple and cheap to collect... I have well over a hundred of them... and that doesn't include doubles...

On the electronic side... I collect most of the stuff other people do... mp3s, movies... ebooks... roms... Trying to get full collections of rare things is difficult, and proposes a challenge that I find intriguing. I mainly collect more obscure books, music, and movies... and the roms thing goes back to collecting games...

I also like to play all those nerdy RPG games that get you beat up in high school... Been doing that for ages though [since I was 10 or so, when I started playing Dungeons and Dragons]. Now, I play all sorts of weird stuff... HoL, AD&D, Magic: The Gathering... and even my own RPG system that I've been working on for the past couple years.

I'm with ya on the Rachael Leigh Cook Josie and the Pussycats one. I first saw it expecting it to be a "so bad it's funny" movie, but it turned out to be pretty good, and she was so hot in it. Now I'm a lifelong Rachael Leigh Cook fan, although I haven't gone out of my way to see any of her other movies yet. Plus, it has Tara Reid playing an airhead - who knew she was such a good actress?

I have too many dimwit hobbies to comment on (Star Wars, Videogames, common stuff), but I will say a big THANK YOU to Matt for doing this whole Kool-Aid -thing-

I LOVED Incrediberry and I still have one packet left in my old Kool-Aid stash. It holds a proud spot amonst my other lowly Kool-Aid packets.

Thanks again Matt for re-kindling happy memories from my youth. Keep it up!!

Yeah, I'm a star trek nerd. I collect the action figures, all the other toy-like shit I can get my hands on, Star Wars stuff (got to meet Chewbacca and Worf in the same room last year). I especially specialize in keeping perishable franchise-based food products longer than anyone should. I currently have an 11 year old box of Star Trek TNG oreos, 11 year old box of star trek "animal cracker" type things in the shape of worf's head, and all of those packages of star wars m&m's they came out with recently - ALL of them. It probably started when I was about 6 and used to eat those TNG oreos every day, begging my mother to buy box after box just so that maybe I could get a different cut-out cardboard ship on the back, instead of the same stupid Enterprise every single time. DAMN YOU, PICARD!

I also maintain a sizable collection of those plastic collectible cups you get with slurpees or at fast food restaurants - Jurassic Park, Batman Returns, Toronto Blue Jays, Hulk, Revenge of the Sith, etc.

And last but not least, I download practically every episode of every TV series I've ever watched - real Ghostbusters, that old Beetlejuice cartoon, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Star Trek Enterprise, The Prisoner, Mythbusters, Doctor Who, X-Files, The Lone Gunmen,STbig grinS9, Reboot, Penn & Teller's Bullshit ... whoo, that's a lot of illegality.

So, in conclusion, my hobby...is being a nerd.

Road Block -- going with what you said, I'd rank collecting old school NES carts pretty high up. Especially carts in the boxes with the instructions and so on. You're right -- they were such a huge treat to get back then, and our collections built so slowly due to their price and the fact that, as kids, we had two bucks to our name. Now you can grab zillions of boxes NES carts for a song. I've got quite a few, and I don't even have to play them regularly for it to have been a wise hunt: Those boxes look a heck of a lot more interesting than books on a shelf.

Muppet Baby, my g/f thinks I'm nuts cause I read the King books over and over. It's not that I missed things, it's just that they are that damn good! It's good to read things that you enjoy more than once.

Lessee...I suppose that most of my time is spent playing computer games. CRPGs, mostly, when my soul isn't being savaged by my bouts of addiction with the Sims 2. I don't like to like the Sims, but it's not something I can really help.

Another big chunk of my time is spent writing. Mostly science fiction and fantasy, and mostly epic world-building projects. I can completely understand how Tolkien burned several decades of his life on it. Although sometimes I feel obscurely bad for spending five hours detailing the climate and native cultural peculiarities of an imaginary desert.

I collect Defenders comics, more out of a desire to have at least one full run of comics than any feeling that they're the "best" comic out there. They're my only real collection, though, my familiarity with other comic book characters are through novels and trade paperbacks.

And I've been collecting Star Wars novels since I was ten. I have every book from the Han Solo adventures to the end of the New Jedi Order. I do not, however, own any Clone Wars novels, because they make me sad. And slightly ill.

So there you have it. I hope you all gained a heaping pile of insight into what makes me tick.

There's a root beer Kool-Aid? That definately needs reviewed. I think Food Network's unwrapped did a segment on Kool-Aid and did failed weird flavors but I don't remember any.

Saw the newest Kool-Aid commercial and Kool-Aid was spilling out of the Kool-Aid Man. That's creepy to me.

I read comic books. Started around the Death of Superman in 93. But I stopped. I then restarted nonstop when they restarted JLA comic book with their big guns (Supes, Bats, WW, etc.)

Wow that stuff is RED - even moreso than Tropical Punch... I think I might have gotten a sunburn from looking at that pic.

My hobbies:
I, too, write fanfic - mostly for anime. I've got literally hundreds of emails full of fanfic writing ... but I never let anyone else read them.

I'm also part of a group that writes Anne Rice vampire fanfic - in a way. It's more like, we each take on a character and write stories with the other appropriate character at the message board we have. It's really good stuff, compared to most of the poser sites with the same idea - and yes, there are tons of them.

I collect Barbies. Not all of them, or just any of them - but the really pretty ones in those beautiful gowns. I've got around 50 of them, I think. It all started with the Sapphire Sophisticate Barbie that my mom got me at TRU a lonnnng time ago, but my favorite is probably my Fairy of the Forest (the first in the series.)

I like to paint things. I love paint, itself, and to me, even painting a room a pretty boring shade called "Marshmallow" is fun. (*ahem* My bedroom, btw...) But, I really like to paint those little jewelery boxes you find at craft stores for like 99 cents. Yeah, I go all out on them - glitter, beads, ribbon, you name it and it's probably been on one of my creations.

Neopets. Need I say more? For three years I've been addicted, now. Please don't laugh...

I can't think of anything else right now, but yeah, of course there's more stuff I like to do. smile

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 06/25/2005 12:43 PM EST

Speaking of Neopets, can you give us any inside info, Matt? wink
gesis, I love Homies. What's the deal with the Italian-ie "Offer you can't refuse" versions that they sell now? Are they still supposed to be Latinos, or what? I actually like Mijos the most since they are the cutest and have the best detail, but I don't see them nearly as often anymore. I've been buying the Spongebob vending toys, but I think I've already got most of Bob and I'm not going broke searching for that elusive Sandy Cheeks.
I collect autographs too (already mentioned this before), though it starts to feel sort of debasing if you're a dork about it. So far I've met and collected sigs from most of the Carnivale cast, Alton Brown of Good Eats, Penn and Teller and the cast of Reno 911!.
It looks like his rocket boots are somehow powered by the ultraberries....if only mankind could harness the alternate energy sources pioneered by the Kool-Aid Man there could be peace in the middle east.

Muppet Baby...avid reader? Well, we still read the words, so yeah! Fo sho!
Top 3? The Stand, Insomnia, Christine? Eyes of the Dragon, IT, Rage? It's too hard. I do reaaallly like The Long Walk, though. Excellent. Very dark, but not horror. I have a hardcover copy of "Thinner" by Richard Bachman, original printing. It was my late father's. It's not in good shape (I wrote in it when I was a kid..naughty!!) but it's still cool to have.

Hey, we're talking about Stephen King again! Where's trajeal?!?

TV: it taught me to read, it's a showcase for other peoples imaginations, and I think my exsitence requires daily doses of light from the picture tube.
Books: I read mostly Science Fiction, but have a good base of Fantasy, Horror, and the occasional crime novel.
Comic Books: Haven't got any new ones in a long while, but try to keep up on what's happening with my faves, Spider-Man and Green Lantern. Oh, I'm closing in on three years of buying Shonen Jump. I really need to get a subscription.
Video Games: I play for Fun. Atari 2600/7800, NES, SNES, Game Boy, Virtual Boy, Sega Genesis/Nomad, those little joystck things from Jakk's, even a couple of those NES-on-a-chip not quite legal units. Wakka-wakka-wakka!
Anime: It all started when I was exposed to Kimba and Speed Racer. Closely affiliated with Kaijuu movies and Sentai shows, all of which ties into my all-time hobby and probably the one thing I could go totally harcore on if not for adamantine self control....
Robots: Clunky 50's style, gleaming Japanese mecha, Robonic Stooges, Inspector Gadget, Steve Austin, RoboCop, R2D2, MEGAS, if it's at least a cyborg, I have to at least see what it's all about.
X-Entertainment: No explanation needed, really.
FARK: Stupid Criminals, Boobies, and the word "Moran."
And perusing a handful of other sites including my Little Brother's Blog. But, here and Fark are where I actually post.
I seek not adventure, it usually barges in uninvited.

I like anime because well... I just do, good stories, characters etc.

I like collecting weird toys because they're weird and I like showing them to people and hearing them go WTF?

I cosplay (dress up like cartoon characters) cause it's fun and I'm an attention trollop (it's like an attention whore, only classier).

I collect DnD stuff because I have no one to play with and I need a fix somehow.

I like finding foreign language versions of TV themes so I can fool people and confuse them. My favorite so far is the South Park theme in Chinese. But second would be Gem and the Holograms theme in Italian.

Glad to see something I said on this blog has been of help.

Be warned, the majority of those movies are ones only a huge RLC fan could adore. Others tend to think ill of them. Think Keanu in Johnny Mnemonic. I love it, but can see how others think its crap.

None of them (I can't speak to Stateside yet) save She's All That, have as much of her as Josie.

So I guess as hokie as it sounds, if you can, start with She's All That. And yes it is teen movie pap.

The price you pay for fame, I guess.

Before I start the list, Matt, I saw part of HISTORY'S MYSTERIES yesterday and they were discussing cryptozoology. I give Bigfoot a thumbs down but a huge thumbs up for dinosaurs in the Congo smile.
My list is about the same as everyone elses but I will try to not be redundant.
1. STAR WARS-The only action figures and whatnot that I did not lose or sell from my childhood. Picked up back up with the advent of ebay and Episode I stuff (because it was EVERYWHERE). It is a huge collection now that takes up my parents bonus room back in FL, my classroom, and my house in GA. Action figures, vehicles both old and new, glasses, folders, etc. More nerdy than I would like to admit.
2. ARCHIVIST-Part of being a History teacher is being an archivist which means that I have a lot of books, children's records (disney, SW, whatever), commericals (thanks to XE!!), DVD's (mostly TV shows), etc. This also includes things that I tape off TV (wrestling biographies, most of the WWF RAW after Owen Hart died, and other one time only kinda things.)
3. MOTU FIGURES-Unlike the SW figures, these were given away to my younger cousin. Most of the figures I have now are NOT the ones I had when I was young. I also have a pretty good amount of the newer figures too. Like SW, I just like MOTU.
I have found that my collections may be becoming too much since I am running out of room. Stuff at my parents house, my classroom, garage here at home, etc. I dont think I will sell anytime soon but I may have to stop buying not due to money but more to do with space....

Writing short stories and fanfic for various shows, from Remember WENN to The Monkees and Sailor Moon.

Collecting "Star Wars" junk and whatever toys related to my obsessions I can afford. I was fortuante to have gotten most of the "Star Wars" action figures that belonged to my siblings away from said siblings before they vanished, and Mom had the sense to see they were collectable and not give them away. I've picked up a couple more older figures at yard sales and a few new figures from the prequils.

Drawing, mostly whatever cartoon, TV show, or movie I'm into at the moment. It all looks like bad anime, but I come from a very artistic family, and it's something to do.

phung, I bet you can find stuff that is fun and within your means. Every town's got a thrift shop or two. Think simple, like shot glasses, or a certain species of stuffed animal, or board games, or weird mistranslated bootleg stuff from the $0.99 store. I know that around here NES carts can be cheap if you don't care about the packaging or a working cartridge.
Cool wallpaper Radio!
I used to read a ton of King too, and I have probably reread the Shining somewhere around eleventy billion times but I haven't read anything else by him in years. I've read everyone praise the Dark Tower stuff so maybe that would be a good place to jump back in.
Does "waiting for it to hurry up and be July 16th already" count as a hobby in and of itself? I'm reading the first Harry Potter this weekend, and trying to get through at least a couple of the others in the next few weeks to help with the anticipation. Is anybody going to midnight release parties for the new book or does everybody just wait for UPS the next day? I did the Amazon thing last time since I was living in the boonies, but I honestly don't think I'll be able to wait any longer than necessary to read it this time around.

I write for myself, from time to time. Not really very good, but its fun for me. Like King and Stephen R. Donaldson, among others, I put my little handful of characters into situations and see if they get out of them. You ever watch a Android, a Warrior-Faerie, and a Sphinx/Gryphon hybrid try to sneak into a Super Villain's secret launch base? Of course they had to collapse the joint to escape. You have to wreck a bad guy's base as you leave. It's the polite thing to do. (It's kinda like Nodwick with starships.)

Hobbies, fun!! Here they are, in no particular order.

1)Name That Tune. I haven't been able to go in forever but I love it, especially when I can guess obscure songs before anyone else. My two proudest name that tune moments were when (both in lightning rounds) I guessed I wanna Rock by Twisted Sister before a guy with a super long mullet and when I guessed Living on a Prayer almost as soon as I heard the first chord. Go me!

2)Reading. I like to read entire novels (big ones) in one day. I've been know to stay up until 5am to finish a book.

3)Tang Soo Do. It's a Korean martial art, the predecessor of Tae Kwon Do, and I love doing it. I test for my second degree black belt at the end of July.

4)Girly Fairytale Movies. I love Ella Enchanted and the Princess Diaries and A Cinderella Story, as well as the Disney movies because I can turn my brain off and enjoy.

5)Buffy. I love Buffy so much, I own all 7 seasons and get into arguments with strangers about the academic merits of the show. I love it so much that part of my English honours project (a 40 page paper I'm writing that is due at the end of February). I'm comparing similar themes found in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Book 3 of Edmund Spenser's epic poem The Faerie Queene (it has a female hero and loads of parallels to Buffy). Through the comparison I will develop a reading of Buffy as a literary epic. I'm very excited about the whole thing smile

I think that's it. But I also love Josie and the Pussycats.

Here're a few of mine:

1) Ultimate Frisbee. My team this summer isn't very good (we're currently 0-5), but it's still a ton of fun. During non-summer months I play racquetball instead.

2) I've been getting into TV shows on DVD lately. Of note are Alf, Aqua Teen, Futurama, and of course Buffy (which I don't own any of yet, since once I buy one of the seasons I'll probably want to empty my pockets and buy the other 6 seasons).

3) Trying different types of good beer. I've only been over 21 for a couple of years so I'm not too experienced, but there are a ton of good beers here in Wisconsin for when I don't feel like settling on Pabst.

4) I always listen to my music when I surf the proverbial 'net. Some of my favorites: Beck, Shakira, Fall Out Boy, Led Zeppelin, Tenacious D, Hilary Duff, The Shins.

5) Reading. The last few books I've read: Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead, Treasure Island, Shopgirl, and I'm currently working on The Historian - awesome so far.

journaling- but not online, I keep mine on paper. I've been trying to keep it up non stop since 8th grade which was about 7 years ago. It's fun to go back and read how silly I acted "back then"

80's toys- just in general I usually collect mostly girls toys and plush. I get them at the thrift store.

No Doubt- I've been a fan of them for almost 10 years now. I love collecting their memorabilia.

anime- mostly Sailor Moon and Pokémon. I like collecting the merchendice more than the DVD or videos.

sanrio- My cousins got me statred on this. Actually my male cousins were trying to convinve me that $.45 (back then) was too much for stickers.

drawing- I only draw cartoons. It's basically all I can draw.

Gozer-- I'm overly excited to hear Alf is on DVD. I love watching the shows I grew up on in the 80's, especially Funniest Home Videos with Bob Saget and Punky Brewster (like the one where Cherrie locks herself in the fridge and Punky and the blonde girl have to save her).

I love everything 80's. I came across x-e while surfing for the My First Sony commercial and have been hooked ever since, although this is my first time posting.

I'm also a volunteer Fire Fighter in upstate NY. I guess you can call that a hobby, it takes up a lot of my time.

That's funny that you mention that fridge episode of Punky Brewster - that's the only episode of that show that I can distinctly remember. I think that if I watched it again though more episodes would flood back to my memory.

As far as Alf goes, I'm suprised how well it's aged. I can't stand most of today's sitcoms, but for some reason I still love that show, even though it's essentially the same if not worse as far as the writing quality is concerned.

I've got tons of Hobbies.....I'll usually only be really "in" to one at particular time, though...my mood shifts. Here are some, off the top of my head:

1) Collecting Nintendo Stuff. Mainly NES games and NES-era related swag, but anythig Nintendo is good. I like weird, obscure Nintendo Hardware.

2) Lego. Both collecting and Building. Went through a "Dark Age" period in High School, but when the Star Wars lego sets came out, I really got into it. Now I'm getting into Pirates and other themes that I missed in my youth.

3) Reading. I'd like to make my living writing, so I read all I can. I particuarly like historical novels and biographies. Science Fiction is also good: Ray Bradbury, A.C. Clarke, and Frank Herbert primarily.

4) Model Railroading. This is the one that most people don't get. I love trains, and MR allows me to create a complete world in miniature.

5) Apple Computers. Actually, I just switched, but this is taking up WAY too much of my time.

6) Volkswagens. This would have to be a major one, considering I drive a New Beetle and all. Love the VW community. I collect VW toys and literature, too.

In addition to the above, I occasionally build models. I used to build model rockets, too, but I haven't done that in a LONG time. I got a projector recently, so I've been watching movies a lot, but I wouldn't cal that a "hobby."

All I got was a poster, but I think it had Wart from SMB 2. Well, I spend a lot of my time playing Sims 2, which I wasn't going to admit, but Jedoc broke the ice for me. Thanks, it helps to know I'm not alone. I also really enjoy video editing.

I used to collect a million things before I got married. To say that my husband hates collectibles in an understatement. The highlights:

-I used to collect TV Guides. I kept the older editions from my collection and I still try to preserve the Fall Preview every year.

-TV collectibles. Oh my gosh, how I love TV stuff. I've managed to sneak a couple of prize pieces (like my ABC mic flag) into my living room. The rest lives in a box in the garage, sobbing softly in remembrance of days on proud display.

-Pop culture memorabilia. In our kitchen is an old McDonald's podium (complete with golden arches) that my dad found in a junk shop and gave me for my 19th or 20th birthday. My husband HATES it, but everyone who's ever seen it thinks it's the coolest thing. I consider it vindication. Besides, he can't tell me I can't have ANY of my cool stuff out.

-Old catalogs. I pretty much keep it narrowed down to Sears/JCPenney/Best. I'll sneak in a new Best catalog if I find one because they're really not easy to come by (and I have such fond memories of them. Oh, and they always have a kickin' toy section.)

well, not to sound like a complete suck up, but this site has become a pretty huge hobby for me. I'm a graphic artist/ comic book artist and I spend a great deal of time on my computer/the internet. And when I'm supposed to be doing things like coloring and touchin up pages I'm usually reading about kool-aid flavors, tetris the board game, or my favorite article of all time, the Ecto Kooler Mystery.

That one seriously blew me away, and it makes a great piece of journalism, anytime anyone asks me what my favorite short story is ( which comes up alot for some reason ) I always point them towards the Hi-C mystery.

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the site, it's given me alot to laugh about since my friend Sean showed me it back in 2001. And this new kool-aid feature has me buying and tasting every kool-aid flavor in my local grocery store.

Thanks again!

Thank you, Battle Snake. smile

Answering my own -- there's the Kool-Aid and cereal prizes bit, obviously.

Toy collecting paved way for this site's creation in many ways, but I'm not really into it these days. Not in the "old way," at least. Save for the brief moments with the Revenge of the Sith line, I pretty much leave the action figures alone...unless they're really, really cool. I'm more into the oddball offshoots of the toy lines than the core figures.

Very much into Friday the 13th lore. Dunno why that particular bug bit me so hard, but I can watch Parts II - V a hundred times in a row and still be perfectly into them. I've read as many interviews with the casts and crews from the various sequels as I could find, and while there isn't a terrible amount of good memorabilia to collect, I still keep my eyes open for it. Sideshow's collection of 12" F13 dolls already ranks as one of my favorite lines ever.

Books/shows about animals, particularly ocean dwelling animals, has and forever will be a great passion. The only animals I'm not particularly fond of reading about are birds. I've got thousand-paged animal encyclopedias, and have read every entry in 'em...except for birds. Can't really explain the bird hate, but they just don't do it for me like the lobsters, I guess.

I have many more, but I'm tired. :/

I have a huuuge collection of transformers which I spent way too much money on, as well as smaller collections of most of the main 80's toylines. I will choose DVD's over groceries as well...and then there's stickers and buttons and weird old musical instruments and comics...I have three rooms in this house stacked up with my junk. I would say this site was responsible for at least a third of it.

Let's see. Hobbies...
-I go to a lot of concerts. A LOT of concerts. I'll go to see just about any/all metal/hardcore punk acts that drift through central Ohio. I went to my first rock show (Silverchair) when I was fifteen, and I haven't been able to quit since. And I know this may sound juvenille, but there are few things I enjoy more than getting rowdy in a mosh-pit. The energy of the pit (or lack thereof) can make or break a concert for me.

-I love video games...perhaps a bit too much. Along with devoting a large portion of every day to playing the damned things, I'm also a bit of a video-game historian. I like researching the milestones of the industry. I'm only into console-gaming, though. I don't have the patience for PC-gaming.

-I like to cook, and I'm pretty good at it too, if I do say so myself. I watch the goddamned Food Network regularly.

-Read: feverishly

-Write: Posthumously

-Drink: Heavily

The wallpaper links (both in the last paragraph) in the latest Kool Aid article don't work for me.

I spend a good amount of time reading, which seems to be a rare thing these days. I can read A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle and infinite number of times. I can't explain it, it's an easy book that I first picked up at age 9 or so, but it just does it for me. I also like Anne Rice a lot, Kurt Vonnegut, Douglas Adams, just getting into Christopher Moore, Arundhati Roy, y'know, everything.

I also work with a blacksmith/jeweler, and am starting to do the jewelry on my own some. I can't do the forging alone for obvious reasons, not having a forge being one of them smile but the basic jewelry I'm doing, it's really fun to do something with your hands that requires a bit of brain work. I guess that's why I'm studying architecture too, the design element. At school, that kind of eats most of my time...but I fit other things in.

Good topic. I dig reading about other XE readers' hobbies, especially the lurkers. I've got two main hobbies right now.

1) Vintage Japanese Motorcycles, specifically Hondas. Started out with me wanting to ride and not being able to afford anything but an old Honda that didn't run, so I had to learn enough to fix it up. Now I enjoy wrenching almost as much as riding and only buy Hondas that are older than I am (pre-1978). I currently have a 1974 Honda CB450 that is a "daily rider" and two project bikes that are 1965 Honda CB77 Superhawks (305cc). These are some of the most attractive bikes ever made IMHO (click my name to see) and have wanted a nicely restored one since I first saw this bike. I'm putting their restoration on hold to get a buddy into the hobby with his own project bike.

2. NES stuff. Yeah, I'm another video game collector, though I'm paring things down to mostly the games I played as a kid. For a while I would just buy tons of games I never had but always wanted, play them for a few minutes and decide I was glad I never blew an entire B-day's worth of cash on THOSE crappy games. I'm at 400 games now (my wife is so patient), but I'll probably drop it down to 50 or so. Maybe then I'll have the cash to finish my Superhawks. wink

Anyways, we went once for fun, but we kept winning! I was the '80s expert' and my 2 moments of glory came when I identified '2 Princes' by The Spin Doctors after only half of the opening drunroll, and when I was the only person in the bar who knew that Dead or Alive sang 'You Spin Me Right Round'!! Comics- I like to use Illustrator to make funny 70's sitcom-esque mystery/adventure comics inspired by real events. When I get enough "episodes" together I'll submit them to some publisher and see what happens. Last time my submission tanked, but I have lots of faith in my newest creation.

Thriftin'-I love going to thrift shops and garage sales. I collect just about everything so it's not too hard to find something to buy. My main collections are GI Joe, Star Wars and He-Man. My favorite toys though are The Six Million Dollar Man, Big Jim and Matt Mason (inspiration for the Colorform Aliens Matt wrote about a while back)...toys way before my time.

60's/70's- I have a big interest in the 60's and early 70's so I read about them every now and then and collect stuff from then. I have a Monkees Puzzle, both versions of the very first Ken doll, a 60's view-master, a swinger camera in the box with instructions and carrying case and my Dad's first GI Joe from the 60's.

Writin'- Every now and then I write articles about random stuff. My latest article, The Lohan Report was inspired by the XE blog. People say my articles are hell-arious so check them out and tell me what you think smile

Hey, guys! I've been an avid reader of the site and lurking here reading the 'blog comments for quite some time ... but never felt compelled to post until now. I just couldn't pass this topic up! (Oh, and ... nothing going on here at work ... so, yeah ...)

1.) Video Games - My eventual goal is to have every home console system available. My collection stands at ten: Atari 2600, NES, SNES, GameCube, Genesis (with SegaCD), Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, Xbox, 3DO (Goldstar), and PS2. I have around 250 games ... heavily favoring the NES side of things. My favorite system? The SNES.

2.) Comic Books - I was into comic HUGE when I was in junior high school. Someone was dying monthly, and every issue had this flashy holographic die-cut foil cover. Eventually I got tired of paying five dollars an issue. You also couldn't just read an issue of Spider-man ... you had to read EVERY issue of Spider-man out that month to get the story. The Spider-Clone story killed my interest. Now, I've gotten sucked back in. I'm REALLY digging the Ultimate series and the new Infinite Crisis stuff.

3.) Bad Horror/Sci-Fi Movies - Having been in a bad horror/sci-fi movie myself ("The Return Of Swamp Thing"wink I suppose this is a natural affection. The cheesier and more poorly acted, the better. Of course, we all sit around giving the films our own personal MST3K treatment. I probably have around 70 bad movies on DVD or so ... and always looking for more! I'm looking forward to getting the "Man-Thing" movie when I can track it down for less than $20.

4.) Alice Cooper - I love Alice Cooper. He's just grand. He's got the whole schlocky B horror movie vibe going on, he's often funny and purposely cheesy ... and when it comes down to it he can just perform a good rock song. I collect all sorts of Alice stuff ... posters, flyers, merchandise, shirts, bootlegs, whatever. My favorite item? I have this giant poster (probably eight foot tall) of an Alice Cooper skull. It scares my wife. =)

Well, I think that about covers it!

Okay so I'm a bit late here adding my hobbies: let's see: music is one of my hobbies (listening to, collecting, etc.) Probably mainly because my father's a drummer so there was always music in my house as a kid. I was into the Beatles at 7 years old because my parents played them around the house all the time. So one of my hobbies is Beatle collecting: books, albums, t-shirts, etc.
I also am big into Rocky Horror: collecting, I have like 7 different copies of the movie on video and DVD, lots of crap, newspaper/magazine clippings, etc. I used to write for a Rocky Horror fanzine occassionally...I got into the whole darn thing from one of my childhood friends who was a sick pervert and showed me the movie. But it was kind of destined that I would like it: my aunt used to see it every weekend in the 70's and 80s...and I have all her old RH crap.
I also collect DVDs and movies, just stuff I like...I also like to draw (majored in graphic design in college) but always wanted to be a cartoonist...obvioulsy it hasn't happened, but I enjoy the arts.
And I'm also an avid Muppet fan. Always been into them, since watching Sesame St. as a young'in, and even interned for the Muppets while I was in college in 1999. Best damn 4 months of my life. And that's pretty much what I'm into!

Man, feels good to know I'm not the only dork with a pile of DnD books which never get used [including the original AD&D books]. Most of my RPG/CCG stuff is boxed up now, due to the magic scene not interesting me anymore, and arrogance over my RPG system being superior to all others smile

@Anne Packrat: If you don't have it already, try getting a copy of the german version of the duck tales theme... it kicks ass.

I generally just like getting the themes to shit I watched as a kid, because I memorized all the lyrics, and get them stuck in my head sometimes... I have themes from everything from the fall guy, to empty nest.

@Melissa: I've always been the perveted friend m'self wink

Chestnuts roasted by gesis @ 06/27/2005 01:41 PM EST

FrostedTornFlake I also collect Alice Cooper stuff! Lunchboxes, figures, anything else... but mostly records. I've even got the Schools Out desk record with the nasty pair of paper underwear.
Oh well my as well commit to the typing and put in the rest. Along with AC and King books, I'm into anything horrer related (duh), RPGs (currently playing Xenosaga 2), SW figures (pride of the collection complete ewok village with enough ewoks to populate Endor), Muppet figures, buy/sell MLPs, pretty much anything 80s/retro related! Which of course is what brought me here!

Chestnuts roasted by MissKitty @ 06/27/2005 02:17 PM EST

bad karma yeah, that's a pretty crazy way to start off your King-career. However, it is interesting to read the two back to back; original and the un-abridged...it's just neat to see the differences, and what got cut. It's kind of hard to know how good the unabridged is without having read the first one.

kingklash Yeah, I 'member you saying that before! It would be so cool to see The Breathing Method as a movie. Maybe the great Frank Darabont could direct a King screenplay! smile

I would also loooove to see "Rage" as a movie, but I believe King himself has said that this would not happen in todays time of school shootings becoming commonplace. Damn kids these days!

Bad Karma:

I agree, Lamb has got to be one of the best books EVER.

I love playing Nintendo, Genesis, any 2-D video games as all the new games give me the gift of motion sickness. I also enjoy going to flea markets and looking at the junk people have for sale....I love music and recording, my friend got a digital 16 track so that has been a lot of fun....i love the lord of the rings both the movies and the books.....and especially ESPECIALLY Bored of the rings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cannot think of anything else right now other than I like lemons.

Oh-and one more thing....as stupid as this may sound but how come everyone makes a big deal out of being the first one to post but there is no celebration out of being the last?? Is it the obvious or do I just need to get a life??

Chestnuts roasted by Mike The Great @ 06/28/2005 12:26 AM EST

LOL Mike! Because, you see, you can never be assured of being the "true" last poster!!!

I collect Spores, Molds, and Fungus.

Chestnuts roasted by Egon @ 06/28/2005 09:38 AM EST

I hoard transformers. I have almost the entire G1 run. I skipped the headmaster/target master crap though (along with some of g2 and some of beast wars/machines and RID). I do have all of the Armada, alternators, g1 reproductions and some of energon. I gave up on energon though cause of how crappy the figures are.
I also travel a LOT.
I spoil my dogs
I just got back into model rocketry after a long break (hey I found all my old crap from when I was a kid, so I figured I'd try it again)
I also hoard tv shows and cartoon series.

Collecting is such an easy word but hoarding fits soo much better. Nothing like having a modded xbox with XMBC, a HDTV and complete series of stuff to watch.

Does anyone here have a hobby that requires leaving your house? Fresh air and exercise people, look into it

Chestnuts roasted by Captain Normal @ 06/28/2005 01:07 PM EST

My hobby requires me to sit in a darkened television studio control room. I have to put on my sunglasses before I leave the building. I'm a CBS-3 intern this summer, and my #1 hobby is production.

I also enjoy burning CDs, going for walks, taking pictures with my digital camera, creating photo documentaries, dancing, writing, reading, movies, and TV.

I'm going to attempt to get a photo documentary I made last fall online soon (it's about the World Trade Center post-9/11), and my recording project, titled "Barbie Girl" (it's NPR gone extremely insane!). I'll provide a link as soon as I can.

Let's see--collections...

Kermit the Frog--I have a Kermit action figure, a 1983 Hallmark Christmas Stocking holder (missing his Christmas hat, just the white part of the hat is still intact--my mom says he looks like Bin Laden), Baby Kermit Beanie, Kermit doll, large talking Macy's 2002 Kermit doll. I also have a Miss Piggy action figure...and the Muppet Movie, the Muppets Take Manhattan, and Muppet show DVDS.

Garfield--I have a large Garfield cuddle pillow that the boyfriend bought me for Valentine's Day (it was one of several gifts), checkbooks, giant Christmas plush, pj pants. I'm looking to get some vintage Garfield stuff from a collector's store in Ocean City, NJ.

Books--I do a ton of reading on my 95 minute commute.

DVD Boxed Sets--Quantum Leap 1-3, Laugh In 1 and 2, Muppet Show, Saturday Night Live (inidivdual disk sets), Freaks and Geeks, ER, In Living Color.

Saturday Night Live--my longest-running hobby yet--8 years and counting. I've been collecting mass-produced VHS tapes, Lions Gate DVDs, books, NBC Videos, and have been taping my own compilation videos since 1997. It's a massive collection--a best of sorts.

Yankees stuff--die hard Yanks fan--Derek Jeter posters, 2000 World Series Jersey, throw blanket, Cabbage Patch doll uniform, ice cream hat bowls, Celebriduck of Derek Jeter, box of expired Derek Jeter cereal, beanies.

That's alot of collections, and really, my room isnt that big. I may post pictures of this stuff on a website.

I also have a Teddy Ruxpin--he's in good condition.

Chestnuts roasted by Allison @ 06/28/2005 02:32 PM EST

Muppet Baby--my favorite is Stephen King is Pet Sematary. I know I spelled that wrong.

Did anyone ever see the Quantum Leap episode with the Stephen King reference (young Stevie?!)

Drez--what cartoons do you have????

Chestnuts roasted by Allison @ 06/28/2005 02:34 PM EST

I'm a little late in the game but two of my more recent hobbies include:

1. memorizing various nes game music so I can whistle them in various situations. If I'm walking through town, I'll whistle the aboveground music from the first ninja turtles game, and when using stairs, I whistle something from bugs bunnie's crazy castle. Haven't chose anything for mallwalking, but the complete works of daydreamin davey sounds tempting.

2.collecting 80's children's videos from labels such as "just for kids", children's video library and magic window. Only time will tell when I find "gigi's magical fountain of youth" and the two unico films.

Chestnuts roasted by cheaptrick @ 06/28/2005 04:33 PM EST

@Captain Normal: If you only knew the adventures involved in collecting... I mean, how many times have you gone 50 miles out into the middle of nowhere to a little rinky-dink open-air flea market filled with cast members from "Deliverance" in the vain hope of finding a hidden treasure amongst all the cruft? Or been waist-deep in the dumpster of the local gamestop?

Most "real collectors" don't just sit home and eBay stuff. I know I don't atleast.

Chestnuts roasted by gesis @ 06/28/2005 06:36 PM EST

wow, capt normal, way to tell us! Seems to me that I recall a few people on here(myself included) that have hobbies that DO invlove seeing the outside world once in a while.

So, what are your hobbies? Oh, other than jumping to conclusions, painting with broad brushstrokes and being an asshole?

Chestnuts roasted by faroniousd @ 06/28/2005 06:39 PM EST

C'mon folks, we've gone this far without getting nasty with each other...let's not start now.

Another hobby of mine that I didn't mention before: I really enjoy griping about the music industry to anyone that will listen. Whenever I meet someone new, I typically break the ice by unleashing a bile-soaked diatribe about how much I hate Godsmack or Fred Durst or Linkin Park. I'm especially prone to this sort of behavior after ingesting a few drinks, so I've developed a reputation within my circle of friends for having the tendency to get decidedly confrontational in our local bars whenever the topic of discussion turns to musical tastes. Perhaps one night after a serious bender I'll pollute the X-E blogspace with my patented brand of seething pop-music contempt. Stay tuned...

Chestnuts roasted by The Yeti @ 06/28/2005 09:23 PM EST

Heh, I guess I'll be the last one to post here smile. Anyway, here goes...

BOOKS: I have all the books by Hemingway, Bukowski, D. Adams and Sallinger, and many books by King and Clive Barker, as well as too many books by other auhors.

VIDEO GAMES: I have a bootleged NES console (called Terminator: Ending Man smile) and cartriges for it are still widely avaible. It's fun because you can buy copies of regular NES games as well as some pretty weird ROM hacks for it.

TOYS: I collect vintage MOTU, and a bunch of bootleged toylines: Star Wars - Power of the Force, new TMNT, various Transformers, Batman: Legends of the dark knight and many more. My latest addiction is a line of "super sized" Justice League bootlegs - they are almost 7 inches tall so they fit well with the rest of my toys.

MUSIC: I'm trying to get vintage records made by bands I love: The Doors, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, etc.

LEGO: I collect mostly old "castle" sets, but the Bionicle line is growing on me.

SPECIFIC CHARACTERS: I have a bunch of Taz toys and memorabilia, and I also collect Tigger related stuff... Speaking of which...

MY SON AND I: We are working together (he'll be four years old this September) on his Winnie the Pooh collection. He's also into Action Man figures, Spider-Man and Batman, and those Kinder Surprise toys.

I guess that's all smile. Oh, and I also play Yu-Gi-Oh card game smile.

Well, being as asshole does take up most of my time, so my hobbies are few. In my asshole free time, i run a website where i sell the paintings that i make with broad brushstrokes. the proceeds from my sales go to needy children. who's jumping to conclusions now?

Chestnuts roasted by Captain Normal @ 06/29/2005 08:25 AM EST

Allison, I have a LOT. Let me know if you're looking for something specific and I'll see what I can do for you

Chestnuts roasted by Drez @ 06/29/2005 09:21 AM EST

I write code. Lots and lots of code. I write programs that do weird things, and have no idea why I do it.

The strange thing is that while I do write programs and work in the IT industry, I find most technology utterly annoying. My cell phone broke like a month ago, I'm really happy without it(!). I don't want no stinking mp3 player. It's all just fluff.

Other than that, I am a documentary junkie and a serious horror movie freak. I also really want to go fishing; I need a vacation.

Chestnuts roasted by shrubbledoo - ummfoofoo @ 06/29/2005 10:30 AM EST

Drez--I do alot of my own hunting--not sure if I'm looking for anything specific right now (money plays a large part in this--I'm not bringing in any kind of money right now in my CBS-3 internship, which going great). Let me know what you have. I'll see if anyting peaks my interest. I bet you have some GREAT cartoons. Do you have a website listing them?

Chestnuts roasted by Allison @ 06/29/2005 10:45 AM EST

Eddie Lightening Frog~ I love Nickelodeon GAS. Legends is one of my favorite game shows. My brother and I used to watch it when we were young, and when we got digital cable, we started watching it again. Pretty sad, but alot of fun. smile

Not really an X-E related hobby, but I collect and repair obsolete computers, and put them to use inflating my electricity bill.
I also still have a truly scary amount of stuff from the old Toys-R-Us ads that get reviewed sometimes.

This is a little late, but I couldn't resist joining the ranks. I have a lot of hobbies that I come back to:

-Reading, an obvious and very broad one.
-Horror movies. I'm on imdb a lot.
-Japanese culture: it started with anime, and then sushi, those cute little toys, etc.
-Interior design: I go into a manic frenzy, where I just have to paint something.
-fanfiction: I love it.
-Halloween: Best holiday ever. It's a huge obsession and I spend a ton of money (not a good thing).
-X-E. Found this site a few Halloweens ago, and have been hooked ever since.

After a long hiatus of many years, I recently resumed doing serious pencil crayon drawings. I spent four whole weeks last month on this drawing of London's Piccadilly Circus (which is, for those of you who are geographically challenged, an intersection in Westminster that's like London's Times Square, not an actual circus), and I'm now working on a drawing based on this Advantix photograph I took in July 2000 of the northeastern corner of Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery. (The Piccadilly Circus drawing is also based on a photo I took.)

Yeah, I'm into photography as well, and I just started a gallery at Fotopic.net in May. (I'll be adding a subgallery of photos I took here in Ottawa on Canada Day within the next day or so.)

I used to say that one of my hobbies was "anime", but that's really technically more of an "interest", and these days, I watch almost as many American and Canadian cartoons as I do Japanese cartoons anyway. If you're a Canadian who was watching Sailor Moon on YTV's The Zone back when they started showing it, you might, but probably don't remember, that PJ Phil Guerrero (and "Snit"wink would frequently get hand-drawn Sailor Moon postcards that looked almost like official art... yeah, that was me, though it was okay for me to send artwork to what is technically a children's programme because I was still young at the time... only 21 ywars old! razz

I also occasionally write amateur reviews and stuff, the most recent being this one of Madagascar, though I have a half-written review of Hayao Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle I've been procrastinating on finishing (it's no Kiki's Delivery Service nor My Neighbor Tototo, but I actually liked it better than the overrated duo of Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away).

Chestnuts roasted by Steve Brandon @ 07/02/2005 05:08 PM EST

i'm a scientist - a molecular biochemist / pathologist to be exact. well, a graduate student specifically, but with my coursework done i pretty much just run a 9 to 5 lab job for the rest of the degree. it isn't really my hobby, but i mention it because the ONLY reason i wanted to be a scientist growing up was because of Doc Brown and the "Back to the Future" movies.

granted, tissue culture isn't exactly what i had in mind, but it does the trick.

i'm too frugal too collect much of anything, but if there is a new kind of candy or soda anywhere of any kind, i HAVE to try it.
