09/13/2005 Entry: "Campbell's Jack-O-Lantern Soup!"

soupyIf you haven't checked the site since last week, boy have you missed a lot. We're now in Day 6 of the Halloween Countdown (okay, Day 3, but there are six entries), with September 14th's article paying tribute to Campbell's Jack-O-Lantern Pasta Soup, an old can of SOUP donated by a wonderful reader named Kelly who completely gets me and understands my unending love for old cans of soup.

Meanwhile, the poor Kool-Aid Section and Cereal Prize Project shed a tear, just now realizing that they're not going to be updated until freakin' November. Time ain't on my side, but in a perfect world, I'd use those sections' downtime for the powers of good by reformatting 'em a bit for a grand reopening when we finish up with Halloween. I feel like the Kool-Aid stuff had good traction, but the cereal prize pages could really use a makeover and a few other bits of nonsense. They'll be back someday.

Manimal, you'll be happy to know that the Friday the 13th: Part III theme is among the new entries soon to be added to the Halloween Jukebox.

Edit: Should've linked this earlier, but about two weeks ago I contributed two entries to Olllld Friend Brandon's fabulous 50 Greatest Movie Fight Scenes list. Really fun article that y'all should get to checkin'.

And, a survey: Is there any song missing from the Halloween Jukebox? Come on. There must be some.

Squee, if you're reading...caught your post about Rome in the previous thread. It's actually grown on me quite a bit -- I'm definitely a regular watcher. Liking how they're incorporating sappy, cliche TV devices into the atmosphere.

Freaking awesome! You know how I love the old food articles. The directions there were hilarious. Excellent job, Matt!

I have the first post so now I can die happily. I would like to thank MATT and I look forward to seeing mine and others art work. Bossk balloons! :/ that was a bad one.

That soup looks ghoulishly disgusting. I love it. I say we have the ghost with the most eat some of it and then have something horribly wrong happen to him because of it. I bet he'd do it for the 20 clams.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt(#2?) @ 09/13/2005 08:44 PM EST

MATT- What happened to my first post? Is there a word minimum? All I typed was "first" and then it was gone. This has happened to me before. Has this happened to anyone else?

Chestnuts roasted by Darth Poop @ 09/13/2005 08:44 PM EST

Darth, I'll be honest! If I'm around, I usually delete first post comments if that's all they say. I don't have a rule against it, but it's preferred that any "first post" messages be followed up by a "legit" comment. That said, I don't catch all of them. smile

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 09/13/2005 08:46 PM EST

Again I want to say I have two mp3's I can email to you that are very halloweeny to contribute to the halloween countdown. Just say the word and I'll email them.

Now Campbells can make any shape and put it into soup. When we were kids all we got were letters and stars. Now my son eats the Jimmy Newtron and Dora variety. O well, you can't spell with Dora's map.

Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 09/13/2005 09:01 PM EST

A few weeks ago I was driving and saw a Ford Explorer with the license plate saying "DORA". Get it - Dora the Explorer? I got a kick out of it. Oh maaaaaaaaaan!

Chestnuts roasted by Gozer @ 09/13/2005 09:19 PM EST

I had that soup when it was out. Nice try, but it felt like the same old soup to me.

Chestnuts roasted by James @ 09/13/2005 09:19 PM EST

Maybe I should go on a Halloween diet this week and only eat Halloween-themed foods (sans Ghoul-Aid, unfortunately).

Chestnuts roasted by Gozer @ 09/13/2005 09:21 PM EST

I'm currently gathering Halloweenie music to put together a set of cds. I have always been ridiculously addicted to all sorts of Halloween music, and typically begin listening to it in early November. I'd love to add some tunes to the jukebox, but I have an insanely slow internet connection, and to try to listen to the songs you have so far would be humanly impossible. Can someone list the songs on the playlist? I'd be happy to contribute any that you may not have, Matt.

Chestnuts roasted by EtHM @ 09/13/2005 09:27 PM EST

ooh GOZER-
I got the mexican Kool-Aid, I have only tried tamarindo as of yet. It's brown. Not bad tasting.

Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 09/13/2005 09:29 PM EST

YOu are missing march of ghosts, or is it called parade of ghosts.

Saw the Furby commercial on Nicktoons just now, definatly one of the most intresting contest ads i've seen from Nick in a long time.

Chestnuts roasted by James @ 09/13/2005 09:31 PM EST

Good job kb!! What other flavors did you get?

I think I had tamarind(?) soda at Coca-Cola World in Atlanta.

How does you sister like school in Madison? How 'bout that 65-0 shutout!! BOO_YAH!! j/k, I don't really like foolsball that much, but that was a helluva game!!

Congrats on moving up Matt!!
And what a way to be discovered!! Damn!
I see a version of "People Are Strange" on the jukebox...I happen to have another one that I will send. I think you'll find it pretty damn scary indeed!!

Chestnuts roasted by kidneyboy @ 09/13/2005 09:36 PM EST

THANKS MATT!
Additions to the Jukebox:
1. Ghoulies theme
2. "The Gremlin Rag" (or is that Christmas??)
3. There are more Simpsons TREEHOUSE OF HORROR THEMES on the "Songs in the key of Springfield" CD including Homer doing the intro to the OUTER LIMITS.
4. The Blob theme peformed by the Five Blobs is great
5. Danse Macabre
6. March Funebre des marionettes
7. March of the Gallows
8. Music from the HAUNTED MANSION ride at Disney World/Disneyland (especially the Foyer Music).

Ultimately, they all pale in comparison to F13 part III. smile
I rented that last year just so I could break it down to the 3D goodness in the living room. It is a miracle I am still married...

Chestnuts roasted by the80sruled @ 09/13/2005 09:37 PM EST

I'm having a surprising amount of trouble remembering what the Ghoulies theme sounded like.

The version of People Are Strange on the jukebox is from The Lost Boys.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 09/13/2005 09:38 PM EST

Oh yeah, is there a time when the entries have to be submitted by tomorrow? I am going to let the kids do some book work while I work on my art.
I have had the DEAD MAN'S PARTY stuck in my head all day. There is actually one (goth) girl who wears an OINGO BOINGO shirt to school from 1986(?) tour. Sounds made up but it is true.

Chestnuts roasted by The Manimal @ 09/13/2005 09:42 PM EST

Eh, it doesn't really matter. Let's say by 11:59 PM.

So, I was just listening to "This is Halloween" from Nightmare Before Christmas on the Jukebox and I have to ask... who is looking forward to the new animated Tim Burton flick coming out soon? Think it'll stack up?

Kidney- I also got Jamacia, Mango, Pina Pineapple, and Tangerine. By the way if you want any f those matt, I got doubles.
My sister lives in a house about 2 blocks from campus (off Regent) and when we woke up on Saturday at about 8am, there were people tailgaiting in her yard. Seriously, Brats for breakfast. I felt so outta place without a red shirt on. After a morning of grumbling about the drunks, we went to the open pantry and decided when in Rome. . .

Sounds good.
I don't know if the GHOULIES theme is even available. I just watched it 2 weeks ago and thought that it was a pretty good song. Definitely the highlight. I was surprised on how dark it was. Haven't seen 3 or 4 yet.
P.S. Feed my Frankenstein is great edition. Alice Cooper represented twice on the jukebox!

Chestnuts roasted by The Manimal @ 09/13/2005 09:48 PM EST

I wonder what Jamaica tastes like...winkvery much wink wink!

Is the version of Dead Man's Party on the jukebox the album version or the one from Weird Science? It sounds like the Weird Science one to me, but I'm deaf, so I thought I'd ask.

Holy shit- This teaching job of mine has left me too busy to check the site for a few days and BOOM- there's a goldmine here waiting for me! Wow- I don't know what to read first. Just what I want in my Kool-Aid - brown. Maybe I'll buy some doubles at Woodmans this week and give some of the Latin American Kool-Aid a try.
Also, it looks like I live relatively close to your sister - I live near Regent St too (and I know where that Open Pantry is). Still livin' near campus since my roommates aren't done with college quite yet.

Tubular bells

I saw Mango Kool-Aid at the Super Fresh in North Wildwood today, not a huge surprise since we have a fair-sized Latino population in the Wildwoods (including my neighbors). I didn't get that one, but, inspired by Matt, I did buy some Cherry and Strawberry Lemonade packets on sale at SF.

Great to see the holidays in full swing. This is my fav time of the year to read from halloween to christmas. I was just thinking about the advent calender you do every year for christmas, and was hoping to grab one my self to dork around with this year. Which retailer do you usally grab those at, or do you have a catalog?

Oh man!! That stuff was probably really good 4 years ago. Gotta love the close-up of soup slime. You wouldn't get my tounge near it for $20. I don't think I would EVER lick that. Make that, I would NEVER lick that. Much kudos to Kelly for sending that can of soup.

BTW, one of my friends and I are composing a radio script of an interview with Smurfette. I'm the dry interviewer, and she's Smurfette. It promises to be the second coming of our previous work of art, "Barbie Girl," in which she played Barbie. I suggest you visit the link if you wanna see our work of art. I also have audio of it.

Chestnuts roasted by corn @ 09/14/2005 01:47 AM EST

Allison, I loved the Barbie interview. I think you'd like some of the stuff I write for a website, particularly our "1 on 1" interviews (Just click on my name).

That goes for everyone else reading this too of course... but I don't want to use X-E to advertise - just didn't know how else to invite Allison to take a look (sorry Matt!).

Incidentally, I'll just wade through the puddle of drool left by everyone else enjoying the Halloween countdown to say that X-E is THE staple of holiday enjoyment!

Chestnuts roasted by Mr. Boligarky @ 09/14/2005 01:49 AM EST

Yes indeed...in fact I believe I said in an email (which seems to be a mystery in and of itself) that we wouldn't outright advertise...dammit. We should probably make that the one and only.

PS Matt your shit is seriously awesome and OB is eternally indebted to you.

some songs I felt were missing:
-The "Godzilla" Theme
-That "Trick or Treat" song from the Donald Duck cartoon of the same name.
-"Jeepers Creepers"
-"Killer Klowns from OuterSpace" theme.
-"Nature Trail to Hell" by Weird Al Yankovic

But that's just me.

Chestnuts roasted by cheaptrick @ 09/14/2005 04:08 AM EST

Matt I don't know if you've done this already but why not do a review of the Movie "Creepshow" I watched it a few days ago on Sci Fi and seen it sold at Best Buy. Pretty good movie. I understand it was a real comic book series. Check it out. Another movie Review could be Fun House about a freaky white rat looking monster demanding sex from women. Well that's what I got from it.

Chestnuts roasted by Spade @ 09/14/2005 07:42 AM EST

Small thing, but I'd like if the Koolaid section had a chronological index. Its alphabetical, and when I go to scan for ones I missed, its hard to pick them out of the crowd.

Chestnuts roasted by Piscez @ 09/14/2005 09:47 AM EST

I have not heard all the songs yet, but if it's not on there, you should defintely add the theme from Killer Klowns from Outer Space! Please?

Chestnuts roasted by Review the World @ 09/14/2005 10:15 AM EST

for some reason, i can't get the jukebox to function properly, so i don't know what's already on there. you might have this already, but whatever dave matthews band song they play on the commercial for that new show on the WB, "Supernatural" scares the pants off of me. i also vote for "cry little sister" from the lost boys

Chestnuts roasted by bitchpants @ 09/14/2005 10:37 AM EST

Howzabout the song "Halloween" by the band Helloween. Metal doesn't come in any gayer flavors than Helloween, but the track would still fit nicely in the jukebox.

Chestnuts roasted by The Yeti @ 09/14/2005 11:06 AM EST

The jukebox worked fine the first couple of days but started crashing on the second track starting yesterday. I'm using Windows Media Player on several computers and it crashes on all of them. Any chance it's a corrupted file?

Chestnuts roasted by Carri @ 09/14/2005 11:13 AM EST

Ohhhh...and "The Man Comes Around" by Johnny Cash. The song is actually more about salvation than it is about death and spookiness, but it still sounds creepy as all hell.

Chestnuts roasted by The Yeti @ 09/14/2005 11:15 AM EST

Carri -- we'll look into it tonight. Perhaps there's a line in the code that shouldn't be there.

First of all, I'd like to say that this is truly one of the greatest websites I have ever had the joy of seeing. Kudos, Matt, on your awesomeness.

And would it be possible to get the creepy-ass theme to "Suspiria" on the jukebox? I think it's done by a group called Goblin.

"Ohhhh...and "The Man Comes Around" by Johnny Cash. The song is actually more about salvation than it is about death and spookiness, but it still sounds creepy as all hell."

It was absolutely perfect as the opening song to the new Dawn of the Dead movie, too.

I've been around for awhile now and I've been wondering something. your very good about making jokes against yourself and making self-depreciating comments. how can you still do that with everyone trying to swell your head up? do you have a personal deflator?

Chestnuts roasted by RAS @ 09/14/2005 11:57 AM EST

Thanks Matt. I didn't want to be a jukebox nit-picker but I know you wouldn't want any errors either.

Chestnuts roasted by Carri @ 09/14/2005 12:02 PM EST

You should have dried out the pasta and sprayed 'em with sealant so you could decorate with the little buggers.

My suggestions:
Man in the Long Black Coat - Bob Dylan
Theme from Dark Shadows
Theme from One Step Beyond
Godzilla March
Alien Theme
Basil Rathbone reading selected Poe stories
Castlevania theme

I might have a few others to add when I think of them.

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 09/14/2005 12:19 PM EST

I can't get the jukebox to work either,I use MusicMatch. My windows media is F'd up,and I don't know why. If the jukebox doesn't have "Dancefloor Tragedy" by Suspira,it definately needs it.

A couple of Halloween gem's that missing are Bloodletting (The Vampire Song) by Concrete Blonde, and, with tongue-planted-firmly-in-cheek, Black No.1 by Type O Negative (although at 11+ minutes, might be a touch long). I can send them in if you are interested.

And I just wanted to say, I'm a long time lurker, and I love this site and it's bloggers...

Chestnuts roasted by Devil Denied @ 09/14/2005 12:39 PM EST

Missing Halloween themes:

Outer Limits theme
Theme from Freddy Nightmares
Theme from Friday the 13th, the Series
More Scooby Doo theme songs
Undertaker's theme
Something from Child's Play
More songs from Rocky Horror and Little Shop of Horrors
Rick Moranis Gravedale High
Groovy Ghoulies (Am I the only one that has a tape of this?)
The music the robot band plays in the DR. Phibes movies.
"I Got You Under My Skin" Muppet version
Teenage Frankenstein-Alice Cooper
Songs from the Vincent Price episode of the Muppet Show
Backstreet Back (Yes, I just suggested a Backstreet Boys song)

There's a weird Huey Lewis music video with him as Frankenstein. Can't remember the name though. It's on VH1 Classic once in awhile.

Also, there's a Frank Zappa song called Voodoo something. It's freaky and is also on VH1 Classic once in awhile.

Matt,
How about the Count Duckula theme? I have it on CD and can e-mail it to you if you want. And as for other suggestions how about the Night on Bald Mountain music from Disney's Fantasia or the music from the classic Disney cartoon "The Skeleton Dance?" Also, no Monster Mash?? I'd also get a bang out of seeing more songs from The Worst Witch. You know I love the Grand Wizard wink
By the way suggestion for a movie review have you seen Phantom of the Paradise? That's got some kick ass music too!!

Chestnuts roasted by me @ 09/14/2005 01:03 PM EST

And of course now that I look more thoroughly at your jukebox list, Matt I saw Monster Mash. I'm a doof sorry...Keep up the great work. You've actually gotten me so into the Halloween spirit of things I started thinking yesterday of compiling all my Halloween themed movies I have on video and DVD and planning on watching them soon. 95% of it being Tim Curry related stuff: Rocky Horror, Worst Witch, Wolf Girl (ANOTHER GREAT ONE TO REVIEW!) Stephen King's "IT", etc.

Saw you have night on bald mountain too. Jesus Christ can I not read today?? Sorry here's another one for you though that I definitely did NOT see checking about 50 times now: How about Black No. 1 by Type O Negative? That's a VERY Halloweeny song even mentioning Lily Munster smile

Oh, I'm ALWAYS reading wink. I was really pretty shocked about the Rome news because I thought they had planned it for a single season from the start, but I'm happy to keep watching. Sometimes the exposition is a little clunky but they mix enough soap opera intrigue and *ahem* eye candy to balance out the History's Greatest Hits approach. Also, it's an awesome show to discuss at the watercooler because you sound really high falutin' to your coworkers who aren't in the know.
Welcome to the fold, Denied. Hi to all the other lurkers popping up lately too!

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 09/14/2005 02:02 PM EST

I might not take the time to include it with all the better suggestions posted by others, but another Jukebox song could be "Dracula" by Gorillaz. Either way the song selection is coming together nicely, even with the technical glitches its been having.

Chestnuts roasted by Gozer @ 09/14/2005 02:03 PM EST

-"Nature Trail to Hell" by Weird Al Yankovic

Second! Also, when the Xmas Countdown comes along, I suggest Weird Al's classics "The Night Santa Went Crazy" (both versions) and "Christmas at Ground Zero" (not about 9/11, but nuclear holocaust)

And I'm hoping for 2 things for this countdown: a review on the Halloween Jones Sodas and another Ghost with The Most comic.

Ok, and a good location for finding Frankenberry & Boo Berry here on Long Island. 3 things.

How about "Slime Creatures from Outer Space" by Weird Al Yankovic
or "Attack of the Radioactive Hamsters from a Planet Near Mars" also by Weird Al?

I second the "Suspira" theme by Goblin, they also did the soundtrack for "Zombi", which has some good songs on it as well.

I would have to say the entirety of All Hallow's EP by AFI. I'd also kinda like to recommend My Chemical Romance, but I think it's kinda insulting to include them in a Halloween jukebox just because. Yes, I care about their feelings, and yes I'm a pre-Helena fan. Hell, I loved 'em before I'm Not Okay (I Promise) took off smile

Use "Vampires Will Never Hurt You" if you must big grin Note: It's not really about Vampires

I know its not a Halloween song but Tom Waits 'Gods away on business' is the creepiest song ever.
